Brighton keep European hopes alive with 3-2 win over Liverpool

Egypt Today20-05-2025

BRIGHTON, England, May 19 (Reuters) - Brighton & Hove Albion substitute Jack Hinshelwood struck a late winner as the hosts came from behind to grab a 3-2 victory over champions Liverpool to keep their slim hopes of playing in Europe next season alive after twice coming from behind.
Battling for eighth place and a chance of playing European football next season if Chelsea win the Conference League, Brighton went behind in the ninth minute when Harvey Elliott scored from close range after a superb Liverpool attack, but midfielder Yasin Ayari levelled in the 32nd minute.
The home side still managed to go in a goal down at the break after Dominik Szoboszlai scored with a dipping cross-shot that flew over keeper Bart Verbruggen and into the net in first-half stoppage time, but Brighton boss Fabian Huerzeler made the right changes after the break to turn the game in their favour.
Japan winger Kaoru Mitoma, who was brought on in the 64th minute, equalised four minutes later, cleverly scoring with a difficult shot off the rebound from a Danny Welbeck effort.
Welbeck wasted a number of opportunities on the night, but with Liverpool looking lacklustre since securing the title on April 28, Brighton kept going in the chase for a winner that could see them qualify for Europe if other results go their way.
Offered the chance to become the hero after his introduction in the 84th, 20-year-old Hinshelwood grabbed it with both hands, firing home the winner from Matt O'Riley's pass a minute later.
The goal was initially disallowed for offside but a lengthy VAR review followed and it was given to leave Brighton eighth on 58 points, three ahead of Brentford and four in front of Fulham, with Bournemouth a point further back with a game in hand.
"Coming off the bench, I wanted to come into the game and make a great impact and work my hardest," Hinshelwood said.
"I think the ball comes across and it sat up perfectly and I tapped it in - there was a nervous wait until the goal was allowed but when it was allowed it was pure relief."
Brighton visit Tottenham Hotspur in their last game of the season on Sunday, while Liverpool will be presented with the Premier League trophy at Anfield after they play FA Cup winners Crystal Palace in their final fixture of the campaign.
"You try not to get too carried away with the celebrations, we've worked really hard through the season ... we want to win and enjoy it," Liverpool scorer Elliott said. "We need to take the positives (from this game) and take it into the final game."

Saudi Arabia, Qatar to host fourth round of Asia's World Cup qualifiers

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia and Qatar have been awarded the hosting rights for the fourth round of Asia's 2026 World Cup preliminaries in October, the Asian Football Confederation said on Friday. The pair have reached the next phase of the continent's qualifiers and will be joined by Iraq, Oman, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates in the draw, which takes place on July 17. The decision to award the rights to Saudi Arabia and Qatar comes after Iraq confirmed earlier this week that they had bid to host one of the groups. Teams will be divided into two groups of three nations and the winners of each will join Japan, Australia, Iran, Uzbekistan, South Korea and Jordan in qualifying for the newly-expanded 48-nation finals from the continental preliminaries. Games will be played across three match days from Oct. 8 to 14. The runners-up in each group will advance to a playoff in November, with the winners of that clash featuring in an intercontinental playoff tournament in March to determine the two remaining World Cup spots. The six competing nations qualified for the fourth phase by finishing either third or fourth in their respective groups in the third round of qualifying, which was completed on Tuesday.

Tottenham appoint Brentford's Frank as manager

Brentford manager Thomas Frank applauds fans after the match REUTERS/Hannah Mckay/File Photo (Reuters) - Tottenham Hotspur named Thomas Frank as their fifth full-time manager in six years on Thursday with the Premier League club confirming they had hired the former Brentford boss on a three-year contract to replace the sacked Ange Postecoglou. The 51-year-old Dane, who has been in charge of Brentford since 2018 and established them in the top flight, will take charge of a club that will take part in next year's Champions League after they won the Europa League last month in Bilbao. "In Thomas we are appointing one of the most progressive and innovative head coaches within the game," a club statement said. "He has a proven track record in player and squad development and we look forward to him leading the team as we prepare for the season ahead." Australian Postecoglou's achievement in delivering Spurs' first trophy for 17 years was overshadowed by a woeful Premier League season which saw them finish 17th with 22 defeats, their worst campaign since the club were relegated in 1977. Frank began his coaching career with Denmark's under-age sides before taking charge at Brondby in 2013, leaving in March 2016 and in December that year joined Brentford as assistant to Dean Smith in the Championship (second tier). In October 2018, after the dismissal of Smith, Frank was appointed Bees manager. "From the moment he replaced Dean Smith, he understood what we were trying to build and his wisdom, coaching ability and emotional intelligence have helped transform the club," Brentford Director of Football Phil Giles said. "We will never forget Thomas, but now it is time to thank him and take the next steps in our journey with a new leader who we believe can be just as successful and influential." Frank has been impressive during his time at Brentford -- creating a high-scoring side who have punched above their weight since reaching the Premier League in 2021 via the playoffs. In their four Premier League seasons under Frank, Brentford have finished 13th, 9th, 16th and 10th and last term only four teams scored more than their 66 goals. A keen user of player data, Frank and his backroom staff have proved especially adept at unearthing gems and selling those players on for huge profits, such as forwards Ollie Watkins, Ivan Toney and Said Benrahma plus goalkeeper David Raya Despite the outgoings, Brentford have managed to remain competitive in the top flight under Frank and last season were in the mix for European qualification. Forwards Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa scored 39 Premier League goals between them last season and both could well be Tottenham targets during the close season. Frank has gained a reputation for his attention to detail and it is no surprise that his Brentford side scored inside 40 seconds in three successive league games last season. "We have a kick-off strategy and we tweak it from game-to-game. And as a mindset and philosophy, we like to get straight on the front foot and be positive," Frank said at the time. He now faces a completely different challenge at Tottenham and a fast start to his reign will be important to win over fans who felt Postecoglou should have been rewarded for winning a trophy by being given another season at the helm. Brentford assistant first-team coach Justin Cochrane, head of athletic performance Chris Haslam and first-team analyst Joe Newton are also joining Frank at Spurs, along with Andreas Georgson from Manchester United.
