Asian Cup 2025: Fair Draw But Major Hurdles Remain
KUALA LUMPUR, April 22 (Bernama) -- Despite describing the Asian Cup 2025 draw as balanced, national sepak takraw squad head coach Ahmad Jais Baharun stressed that his team would not underestimate the fierce challenge from other countries because this tournament is expected to be more challenging than the World Cup Malaysia hosted last year.
However, Ahmad Jais remains optimistic as the team's preparations are now at their best and ready to perform brilliantly before home fans from May 10 to 18 at the Titiwangsa Stadium.
"I see this draw as quite balanced but there are major challenges ahead compared to the last World Cup.

"We are currently preparing to further strengthen the team for the Asian Cup and will do our best in the tournament this time," he said when met after the 2025 Asian Cup draw ceremony held at World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL), yesterday.
He added that the team's chances of winning the championship in the regu and doubles events like in the 2024 World Cup are better because the players have potential and it is a trust that needs to be carried with full dedication on that prestigious stage.
"We see this as a big challenge and it is the responsibility of every player selected to play in the Asian Cup this time," he said.
When asked about the traditional enemy, Thailand, Ahmad Jais said the momentum of the national squad's improved performance in recent times showed positive development and was a good sign ahead of the action in the Asian Cup.
He said thorough preparations and the increasingly strong line-up of players, give Malaysia the best chance to snatch the championship from seeded teams such as Thailand.
The event, which also saw the participation of several major sepak takraw powers, is divided into four events, namely regu, quadrant, doubles and team regu.

PSG's Lee pleads with S. Korea boo boys to back team at World Cup
Lee Kang-in waves to fans after South Korea's win over Kuwait in their 2026 World Cup Asian Group B qualifier in Seoul. (AFP pic) SEOUL : Paris St-Germain's Lee Kang-in has pleaded with South Korea fans to get behind the team at the World Cup after more boos were aimed at coach Hong Myung-bo despite leading them to qualification. South Korea reached next year's finals in North America without losing a game but that does not tell the whole story. The country's football association has been in the firing line, having scrambled about to find a successor after sacking the unpopular Jurgen Klinsmann in February last year. They eventually settled on Hong, the decorated former skipper who had an unsuccessful stint as coach in 2013-2014, during which they went out in the group phase of the World Cup in Brazil. The 56-year-old's return a decade later and the way the Korea Football Association (KFA) went about the dragged-out recruitment process went down badly with fans. He was booed in his first game back and the jeers continued on Tuesday even as the hosts celebrated qualification for 2026 with a convincing 4-0 win over Kuwait in Seoul. 'There are people out there attacking and criticising our head coach and the KFA,' the PSG midfielder Lee, who was on the scoresheet, told reporters. 'But since we players are also part of the federation and the coach is our boss, people's criticism also affects us if they get out of hand.' 'I'd like to ask people to see the more positive side of our team. That will help us play better at the World Cup. 'I hope people will help us and keep supporting us.' Hong has won six and drawn four of his 10 matches in his second spell but performances have not always been convincing. With skipper Son Heung-min struggling for form and fitness, South Korea passed up the chance to seal qualification sooner with 1-1 home draws against Jordan and Oman in March. That came after a similarly flat 1-1 draw with Palestine in Amman, Jordan.

Mexico City Welcomes All for 2026 World Cup Countdown
MEXICO CITY will embrace fans from all nations and cultures during the 2026 World Cup, Mayor Clara Brugada said on Wednesday as she unveiled the countdown clock marking one year to the tournament's return to the Mexican capital. As the city prepares to host the World Cup for the third time, Brugada stressed the importance of inclusion and openness, framing a contrast to anti-immigration measures in co-host nation the United States under President Donald Trump 'All football fans are welcome here. In this city, no one is a foreigner,' Brugada said at the FIFA event. 'We will joyfully welcome those who come from all corners of the globe, with their music, their colours, their languages and their passion. We think diversity is our greatest treasure.' 'Today is a very special day for Mexico City. We are exactly 365 days away from opening our doors to the world and hosting, for the third time, the opening of a World Cup, something that no other city on the planet has ever achieved.' Addressing concerns from residents near the Azteca Stadium, Mayor Brugada assured them that they would benefit from over six billion pesos in investments aimed at upgrading public services and infrastructure. 'We will strengthen the rights of residents with more water, better public spaces and more services,' she said. 'We are therefore building a legacy, and that is something that fills us with pride. That is why we have made a historic investment in works, infrastructure, water, security and mobility.' In addition, as part of the festivities leading up to the 2026 World Cup, more than 40 buildings and landmarks in Mexico City will be illuminated in green on Wednesday night.
