Minnesota standout Mara Braun's foot injury will keep her sidelined for the postseason as expected
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota guard Mara Braun will not return to play this season, preserving a year of eligibility after breaking her right foot for the second straight season.
Coach Dawn Plitzuweit confirmed Monday that Braun won't play in the postseason. The Gophers (20-10), who are on the bubble for an NCAA Tournament at-large bid, are the No. 13 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and play Washington in the first round in Indianapolis on Wednesday.
Braun, who was sixth in the Big Ten last season with an average of 17 points per game, first suffered the injury on Jan. 28, 2024, against Illinois when her foot landed on an opponent. She returned after surgery and a two-month recovery to play in Minnesota's first two WNIT games last year, but she aggravated the injury and was sidelined for the remaining three games in that tournament including the championship game loss to Saint Louis.
After playing in the first five games for the Gophers this season, Braun broke the same bone in practice on Nov. 20 and needed another procedure. With her own professional aspirations and the opportunity for Minnesota to have her in the lineup for two more years, taking the cautious approach to her recovery was the easy and expected decision.
'Was it realistic? I think it was hopeful, but probably not something that we were banking on if that's a safe way to say it,' Plitzuweit said. 'You certainly can't go through this again, or you never want to. You just can't risk any of those type of situations.'

Associated Press INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Defending champion Mexico overcame a slow start to defeat the Dominican Republic 3-2 on Saturday night in the CONCACAF Gold Cup opener. West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez opened the scoring in the 44th minute, Fulham striker Raul Jimenez added a goal in the 47th and defender Cesar Montes got another one in the 53rd. Jiménez is third on the Mexican career scoring list with 40 goals, trailing only Jared Borgetti's 46 and Javier Hernandez's 52. 'It was a good win to start with. I congratulate my team, who maintained their emotional balance. It was a hard-fought, but fair victory," Mexico coach Javier Aguirre said. 'Our rival did a lot of merit, they demanded us, they did a good job.' Costa Rica and Suriname, the other countries in Group A, play Sunday in San Diego. 'We were patient, we scored three goals and it was an attractive match for the fans, although there are things that need to be corrected,' Aguirre added. Peter Gonzalez scored in the 51st minute and Edison Ascona in the 67th for the Dominicans, who earned their first qualification as one of the four group winners in League B of the CONCACAF Nations League. Gattuso named Italy coach as the Azzurri aim to avoid missing out on a third straight World Cup
FLORENCE, Italy (AP) — Former hard-tackling midfielder Gennaro Gattuso was named Italy coach on Sunday, tasked with reviving the country's already-flagging World Cup qualifying hopes. Gattuso replaces Luciano Spalletti, who was fired last week after Italy lost its opening qualifier 3-0 at Norway to spark fears that the four-time champion will fail to qualify for a third straight World Cup. Gattuso lifted one of those World Cups as a player, in 2006. "Gattuso is a symbol of Italian soccer, the blue shirt is like a second skin for him," Italian soccer federation president Gabriele Gravina said. "His motivation, his professionalism and his experience will be fundamental to best face the national team's next matches. 'Aware of the importance of the objective we want to achieve, I thank him for the willingness and total dedication with which he accepted this challenge.' Claudio Ranieri was the Italian soccer federation's top choice to replace Spalletti but he turned down the offer. Gattuso's last coaching job was at Hajduk Split but he left the Croatian club by mutual consent at the start of the month after just one season in charge. The 47-year-old had previously coached AC Milan, Napoli, Valencia and Marseille, among others. As a player, Gattuso also won two league titles and two Champions League trophies with Milan, where he made 468 appearances and scored 11 goals. His only goal in 73 appearances for Italy was a fierce 25-meter strike against England in a 1-0 win in November 2000. Gattuso's only trophy as a coach was the Italian Cup with Napoli in 2010. Italy is already nine points behind Norway in its World Cup qualifying group, albeit having played two matches fewer than the group leader. The Azzurri followed up its dismal opening loss with a 2-0 win over minnow Moldova last Monday in what was Spalletti's final match in charge. He had revealed that he was being fired the previous day. Gattuso's first match as Italy coach will be at home to Estonia on Sept. 5. Israel is also in five-team Group I. Italy hosts Norway in the final round on Nov. 16. Only the group winner advances directly to the 2026 tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The runner-up enters playoff brackets to be played next March. That was the stage where Italy was eliminated by Sweden and North Macedonia and ruled out of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, respectively.
