Saudi Arabia Amplifies Entertainment Drive with Riyadh Expo Showcases
Over 25,000 professionals from more than 30 countries convened at the Riyadh Front Exhibition & Conference Center between 20 and 22 May for the Saudi Entertainment and Amusement Expo and the Saudi Light & Sound Expo. The events featured over 550 exhibitors, highlighting Saudi Arabia's commitment to transforming its entertainment sector in line with Vision 2030.
Sarkis Kahwajian, Associate Vice President at dmg events, the organiser of both expos, described this year's agenda as the most diverse and dynamic to date. The SEA Expo, now in its seventh year, showcased innovations including AI-driven theme park solutions and immersive virtual and augmented reality experiences. These developments reflect the Kingdom's $64 billion investment strategy in the entertainment sector.
Krishna Raji, CEO of SocialKrowd, the Dubai-based social media company managing the expo's account, noted the event's success in digital engagement. She stated that the engagement levels and global reach achieved through digital campaigns exceeded expectations, underscoring the Kingdom's growing influence in the global entertainment arena.

The co-located SLS Expo brought together over 200 local and global brands specialising in professional lighting, sound, and audiovisual technologies. The expo featured more than 100 speakers across 10 conference sessions, discussing topics such as sustainable production and the integration of smart technologies in live shows.
These expos are part of Saudi Arabia's broader efforts to diversify its economy and reduce reliance on oil revenues. The entertainment sector is expected to create 450,000 jobs and contribute 4.2 percent to the country's GDP by 2030, according to the Ministry of Investment. The Kingdom has issued over 2,000 licenses in the entertainment sector over the past five years and hosted 26,000 events, attracting more than 75 million attendees.
Major projects like Qiddiya City, an expansive entertainment, sports, and cultural destination near Riyadh, are central to this transformation. Qiddiya will feature attractions such as Dragon Ball and Six Flags theme parks, the largest water park in the Middle East, and numerous other world-class facilities. These developments are expected to attract millions of visitors annually, including residents and domestic and international tourists.
Since the lifting of a 35-year cinema ban in 2018, Saudi Arabia's film industry has seen significant growth. The Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah has become a prominent event, showcasing the industry's progress and highlighting emerging Saudi talent. The country aims to construct 350 cinemas and promote local filmmaking through grants and training, further diversifying its cultural offerings.
Despite these advancements, challenges remain. Saudi Arabia's ambitious push into television and film, centered around MBC Studios and Neom Media, has faced significant hurdles, including delays, budget overruns, and controversies. Projects like the historical drama 'Muawiya' experienced setbacks, and major film ventures such as 'Kandahar' underperformed. Neom Media, envisioned as a futuristic production hub, has struggled with leadership instability and difficulties attracting international filmmakers due to logistical and regulatory hurdles.

'It's not just the kids who are crazy about Labubu,' said Abdul Rahman, a father of two from Muweilah. 'Even I have started noticing how cute it is. We bought Labubu-shaped ice creams last week, and the kids were over the moon. It's such a fun way to enjoy dessert.' Labubu ice creams are available at the Frozen Factory and have become a hit at birthday parties and family gatherings. According to a staff member at the Al Zahia branch, the ice cream is flying off the shelves. 'We have seen a sharp rise in customers coming in just for Labubu ice cream,' said a salesperson. 'Parents come in with their kids, and some even call ahead to check if it's in stock. It's become one of our best sellers.' Soft toys are another hot item. Labubu plushies of all sizes are now common in supermarkets and toy shops. While some are official merchandise, others are local versions made to resemble the beloved character. In Sharjah, a well-known discount centre has become a hotspot for Labubu fans. 'Every single day, people come in asking for Labubu toys, snacks, and keychains,' said Hameed Shukur, a salesman at the store. 'We restock constantly, and still, it's hard to keep up with the demand.' What makes Labubu so appealing? For many, it's the character's expressive design and playful energy. For others, it's the growing trend on social media, where influencers showcase Labubu-themed hauls, gifts, and decorations. 'My son carries a Labubu keychain on his school bag, and now his whole class wants one too,' said Arfa, a resident of Abu hail. 'It's cute, harmless, and makes the kids happy.' There's a reason Sherlock Holmes and his escapades haven't gone out of style since he made his debut in A Study in Scarlet back in 1887. That's the enduring popularity of a good puzzle. And who doesn't love to pit their wits and flex their powers of deduction against a powerful video game? Puzzles are having a major moment. This includes books, such as the popular Murdle series of mysteries; escape rooms where groups must solve the clues together to unlock the door; and even Wordle, which has maintained its pandemic-era popularity. Released this year, video game Blue Prince has proved wildly popular thanks to its mix of storytelling and puzzle-solving. 'I'm at that age where a wild Friday night involves staying in and playing video games with my better half,' says Nathan Irvine, radio and podcast producer at Dubai Eye. ' Blue Prince is our current favourite. We play it together – one uses the controller to wander around the mansion, and the other takes notes on clues. 'These games activate multiple regions of the brain,' says Gajjam. 'The prefrontal cortex is heavily engaged as players plan, strategise and solve problems. The hippocampus supports memory formation and recall, while the parietal lobes assist with spatial awareness and logical reasoning. Engaging these areas regularly promotes interconnectivity between brain regions, which enhances overall cognitive efficiency.' Benefits for young and old Video games are often considered the preserve of the young, but puzzle games are cross-generational, with benefits for younger and older brains alike. 'One of the most fascinating aspects of logic and puzzle gameplay is that their impact is age-specific, yet universally beneficial,' says Yasir Shafi, a homeopathy practitioner at Wellth. 'While the mechanisms of benefit may differ by age, the underlying principle remains the same: consistent, challenging mental activity is one of the most effective ways to support brain health across the lifespan.'
