Smoky skies, local air quality impacts continues today
We're continuing to monitor the Canadian wildfire smoke and how it is impacting our local air quality. We're also watching a cold front approaching from the northwest today. That passing boundary and its associated precipitation should be able to 'wash' the atmosphere clean of the smoke by Friday. Until that 'wash' happens, we should expect another day of local air quality impacts.
The hazy, smoky sunshine will illuminate the landscape in a unique, dull look just as we have become accustomed to the last few days. Similar to every other day this week, the smoke will remain high up in the atmosphere. That will result in another day with a 'Moderate' Air Quality Index readout. This means that the most sensitive groups (elderly, infants/toddlers, those with breathing problems/respiratory conditions) should take it extra easy if outside, especially as we toss more heat and humidity into the forecast today.

Warmup on the way, with a few southern storms in the mix
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – Happy Sunday, Utah! Summer vibes are settling in across Utah as high pressure builds in, continuing a warming trend that's set to carry us through early in the week. Daytime highs are on the rise, expect upper 80s to low 90s across most valleys, and close to 100° down in St. George this afternoon. We're still hanging onto just enough leftover moisture to spark a few isolated afternoon showers and storms, especially across southern Utah. These will be hit-or-miss and mostly short-lived, fading quickly once the sun goes down. Monday looks similar, though a weak disturbance could bring gusty outflow winds with any southern mountain storms. Looking ahead to midweek, moisture starts to creep back in thanks to a passing weather system. Storm chances pick up a bit across the higher terrain on Tuesday, and northern Utah could see a slight chance on Wednesday as that system brushes by. It's not looking like much for the valleys at this point, mainly cloudy cover and a slight chance of an isolated storm. By the end of the week, another disturbance could stir up more activity, but the details are still hazy. One thing's for sure… the heat is on, and we're heading into a stretch where fire weather could become a concern, especially in southwest Utah as winds ramp up throughout the week. Stay tuned. Water Safety Tips as Local Lake Levels Rise
Belton, TX (FOX 44)– Recent rain has greatly contributed to our local lake levels–with Lake Waco and Lake Whitney at 100 percent capacity and Lake Belton around 96% full. Alex Klaypac is a park ranger at Stillhouse Lake. He says to be mindful of obstructions hidden beneath the surface and shares some water safety tips. 'We just want everybody to be as safe as possible when they're on the water and in our parks,' he says. As you pack your car full of your lake necessities, don't forget one very important item–A life jacket, even for the strongest of swimmers. 'Wear a lifejacket when you're on the boat, when you're swimming, and even on the shoreline. Just be safe,' Klaypac says. Finally, make sure you stay hydrated. 'Please bring and drink a ton of water–like, more than you think you need,' says Klaypac. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Sunday brings another round of storms for St. Louis
ST. LOUIS – Guess what? Another round of storms are in the forecast this weekend for the St. Louis region. Saturday brought various periods of rain across St. Louis and even a tornado warning early Saturday in nearby Jefferson County. On Sunday, we could start with some foggy and cloudy conditions. Where you'll really need to pay attention is Sunday afternoon into the evening, though timing for the next round of storms remains to be determined. The next system will likely move out of the northwest toward St. louis early Sunday evening. This will be a line of storms along the leading edge of another cold front. With that, as it first initially gets going, there could be some threats for rain, thunderstorms, hail and damaging winds. Some isolated tornadoes could also be a possibility. The western half of our viewing area, much of Missouri west of St. Louis and Jefferson counties, is categorized in the Slight Risk (Level 2) for severe weather, while the eastern half, primarily including southern Illinois, is under a Marginal Risk (Level 1). After this round of storms, calmer and quieter weather takes shape through the first half of the workweek with temperatures in the 80s before the pattern becomes unsettled once again by next weekend.
