Ayer Kuning polls: Muhyiddin urges eligible voters to come out in full force to cast their ballots
MUAR: Former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has called on all voters to fulfil their responsibility by coming out in full force during the ongoing Ayer Kuning by-election.
While the Bersatu president said he had yet to receive the latest voter turnout statistics, Muhyiddin said he hoped the numbers would be encouraging.
"I mentioned in a video that went viral recently that voter turnout is crucial. It is the duty of every citizen — Malay, Chinese, Indian, Orang Asli, everyone — to exercise their right to vote," he said.
He said this when met at the Pagoh MP's Hari Raya Open House at the Pagoh Sports Complex, here, on Saturday (April 26)
Muhyiddin, who is also the Perikatan Nasional chairman added that historically, areas with a strong Malay majority saw lower turnout rates, but if the current participation was high, it could bode well for Perikatan.
The Ayer Kuning by-election features a three-cornered contest between Barisan Nasional candidate Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir, Perikatan Nasional candidate Abd Muhaimin Malek, and KS Bawani of Parti Sosialis Malaysia.
The by-election was called following the death of its incumbent, Ishsam Shahruddin, on Feb 22 due to a heart attack.

Chinese fighters flew close to Japanese patrol planes, Tokyo expresses concern
TOKYO: Chinese fighter jets flew unusually close to Japanese military patrol planes over the weekend, Tokyo said, after two Chinese aircraft carriers were spotted operating simultaneously in the Pacific for the first time. "We have expressed serious concern to the Chinese side and solemnly requested prevention of recurrence," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi (pic) said on Thursday (June 12), referring to the June 7-8 incidents in which Tokyo said Chinese jets flew as close as 45m to Japanese planes. On Saturday, a Chinese J-15 jet from the aircraft carrier Shandong chased a Japanese P-3C patrol aircraft for about 40 minutes, according to Japan's defence ministry. On Sunday, a J-15 chased a P-3C for 80 minutes, crossing in front of the Japanese aircraft at a distance of only 900m, it said. A spokesperson at the ministry's Joint Staff Office declined to disclose whether the same planes were involved in the incidents on both days. The P-3C aircraft, belonging to Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force based in the island of Okinawa, were conducting surveillance over international waters in the Pacific, according to the ministry. "Such abnormal approaches by Chinese military aircraft could potentially cause accidental collisions," the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday, attaching close-up images of the J-15 jet it took on Sunday. There was no damage to the Japanese planes and crew, it added. Hayashi, the top Japanese government spokesperson, told a regular briefing that Tokyo will maintain communications with Beijing at various levels and ensure the monitoring of airspace around its territories. Earlier this week, Tokyo said the Shandong and another Chinese carrier the Liaoning were conducting simultaneous operations in the Pacific for the first time, describing it as a move signifying Beijing's intention to further widen its capabilities beyond its borders. Beijing has said the operations were a "routine training" exercise that did not target specific countries. Bersatu leader to enter defence to sedition charge
Razali Idris is standing trial on one count of sedition for remarks allegedly uttered at Padang Astaka Chukai in Kemaman on Nov 10, 2023. KUALA LUMPUR : The sessions court here has ordered Bersatu leader Razali Idris to enter his defence to a charge of uttering seditious statements in a speech two years ago. Judge Norma Ismail held that the prosecution had established all the ingredients of the charge against Razali, a Terengganu exco member. Lawyer Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud, assisted by Sahrilnizam Amin, informed the court that the defence would call between three and four witnesses to testify in Razali's defence. The hearing will continue on Sept 26. Deputy public prosecutor Badiuszaman Ahmad appeared for the prosecution. Razali is standing trial on one count of sedition for remarks allegedly uttered at Padang Astaka Chukai in Kemaman on Nov 10, 2023. He allegedly questioned the difference in treatment received by deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, after Zahid was conditionally discharged of 47 corruption charges. Syed Saddiq meanwhile was convicted of criminal breach of trust.

PETRONAS terminations should be gradual, give training, says Muhyiddin
PETALING JAYA: The planned layoff of 5,000 PETRONAS employees should be done gradually, says Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. "The terminations should be gradual, allowing for training in entrepreneurship skills and capital assistance to venture into businesses matching their qualifications," said the Perikatan Nasional chairman on Facebook on Wednesday (June 11). He said that although these employees are contract workers, they have served PETRONAS for a long time and have families to support. Muhyiddin suggested using funds meant for training Bumiputra entrepreneurs for this purpose, as it is the government's responsibility to address the issue. "There is no denying that PETRONAS faces significant financial challenges, with post-tax profits dipping by 32% from RM80.7bil to RM55.1bil compared to the previous year,' said Muhyiddin. "In the face of global challenges, falling oil prices, and the transition to renewable energy, PETRONAS needs a long-term plan to remain sustainable and competitive," he added. Muhyiddin said that as a nation-owned company contributing large dividends to the government and playing an important role in national development, the government must always protect the interests of PETRONAS and its employees. "Thus, it is reasonable for the government to immediately present PETRONAS's economic plan and the direction of the state's oil and gas industry," he added.
