Past arrest of new Uniontown Area High School girls basketball coach has parents asking questions

CBS News07-05-2025

The hiring of a girls basketball coach at Uniontown Area High School is causing concern among some fans.
Dierre Jenkins is the new girls basketball coach at the high school in Fayette County. But a past arrest for selling cocaine has parents asking why he got hired.
The Uniontown Area School Board voted to hire Jenkins at Monday's board meeting. After Jenkins' arrest in 2023, he entered a program for first-time offenders that led to his criminal charges being dismissed and his record expunged.
While Jenkins does have a lot of support in the community, there are still those who don't believe in second chances in this instance.
"I wouldn't want my kid to be exposed to somebody who has that criminal past," said Ashley Fairfax.
Fairfax is a parent in the Uniontown Area School District. She called the hiring of Jenkins disappointing. She believes athletic coaches fall into the same category as teachers and should be held to a different standard.
''They're around children and they're also public servants, basically, that they should be held accountable for their actions," she said. "I believe there's a second chance out there for him. I don't necessarily believe it should be at a school with children."
Jenkins most recently served as an assistant boys basketball coach at neighboring Laurel Highlands High School before he was let go in 2023 after Pennsylvania State Police filed charges accusing him of selling cocaine to a confidential informant.
"I think everyone deserves a second chance. If he's going to clean himself up, let him have it," parent Hattie Hughes said.
Under the former district attorney, Jenkins entered an accelerated rehabilitative disposition program for first-time offenders.
"There's a lot for people who make bad decisions, and then turn their life around and do much better for themselves the second time," Hughes added.
Jenkins was a 2002 graduate of Uniontown Area High School and a member of the 2002 WPIAL basketball championship team.
In a statement to KDKA-TV, Superintendent Dr. Dan Bosnic said, in part:
"Coach Jenkins is recognized as an alumnus of the school and has a passion for the game of basketball. We look forward to the future success of our girls basketball program."
Jenkins told KDKA-TV's Shelley Bortz off-camera that he's excited to be the team's coach and is looking forward to the challenge.

Feds warn about threats to Israeli and Jewish institutions and supporters in U.S.

Washington — Federal law enforcement agencies have issued a new intelligence bulletin, obtained by CBS News, warning that recent attacks in Boulder, Colorado, at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., and at the Pennsylvania governor's residence "could motivate others to conduct violence against Israeli and Jewish institutions, or their supporters." The memo was issued by the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI and the National Counterterrorism Center to law enforcement nationwide Wednesday, voicing concern that "some individuals online are sharing the manifesto of the alleged Capital Jewish Museum attacker, praising their actions, and calling for additional violence." "We advise security partners to remain vigilant for threats of targeted violence against Jewish and Israeli communities, and their supporters," the memo says. On Sunday, a suspect allegedly used Molotov cocktails to attack a march for Israeli hostages in Boulder, Colorado, injuring more than a dozen people. He has since been charged with 118 state criminal charges, including 28 counts of attempted murder. On May 21, two Israeli Embassy employees, Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Lynn Milgrim, were shot and killed as they left the Capital Jewish Museum. The suspect, who shouted "Free Palestine" as he was taken into custody, faces first-degree murder charges. And in April, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who is Jewish, was allegedly targeted by a man who officials say intentionally set fire to the governor's residence while Shapiro and his family were home asleep. The suspect has been charged with attempted murder, terrorism and other crimes. The law enforcement bulletin said intelligence analysts assess that "online messaging promoting violence by foreign terrorist organizations, their supporters, and other threat actors particularly messaging that highlights successful attacks –- could compel threat actors motivated by various ideologies to engage in violence." The law enforcement agencies also warned that foreign terrorist organizations have pushed content encouraging violence regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict, "and the online messaging is one of many factors that has influenced the radicalization of violent extremists." contributed to this report.

Driver of SUV involved in hit-and-run in Bethel Park tells police he needed to buy a toothbrush

A man has been charged after a hit-and-run in Bethel Park left a motorcyclist with road rash. According to the criminal complaint, on Wednesday, police were called to Logan Road for a reported hit-and-run between an SUV and a motorcycle. Once they arrived, they spoke with the victim, who was riding his motorcycle on Logan Road when a red SUV attempted to turn left. The operator of the bike said he hit the brake and swerved left to avoid colliding with the SUV, but ultimately, the SUV continued its turn, hit the bike, and knocked the victim onto the ground. The motorcycle ended up in the front yard of a home on Logan Road. After the crash, the victim stood up, yelled at the driver, and stood at the front of the SUV. However, the driver refused to stop, telling the victim he was sorry and couldn't stop because he had somewhere to be. The SUV accelerated and hit the victim, causing him to roll down the driver's side of the SUV and sending him onto the road. He gave the description of the SUV to the police, who were able to identify it later on Library Road and pulled the driver over, saying that his vehicle matched the description and had observable damage. The driver was identified as Anil Rivedy, and he admitted to being in the crash, as well as saying that he had somewhere to be. He told police that he was on his way to Shop-n-Save to buy a toothbrush, as the reason he was unable to stop. Rivedy is now facing charges of accidents involving death or personal injury, failing to stop and render aid, aggravated assault by vehicle, and other moving violations.
