This is how her mother Basetsana Mongale described her daughter as she paid her last respects during an emotional send off as scores of mourners, including friends, relatives and community members gathered at the Bloemfontein City Hall for her funeral on Sunday. Last week police named three suspects linked to the killing including Fezile Ngubane, Philangenkosi Sibongokuhle Makhanya and Bongani Mthimkhulu. On Friday Makhanya shot at police, who returned fire and killed him at a residential complex in Amanzimtoti while Ngubane was cleared in the investigation after police established that he had also been a victim of Makhanya and Mthimkhulu. Government officials and political leaders also attended the funeral. "We might not understand the ways of life, but she fought. My daughter was extra careful and would not have allowed a total stranger to fetch her from her gate, I know that she is a fighter. SASSA delays June 2025 grants for 210 000 over undeclared income
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced that it will delay June 2025 grant payments for approximately 210,000 beneficiaries who appear to have failed to fully disclose their income. This move follows a joint investigation with registered Credit Bureaus, which identified potential irregularities where some social grant recipients may be receiving alternative income that was not truthfully declared at the time of application, or subsequently. Under the Social Assistance Act, all grant applicants are legally required to disclose all sources of income during the application process and to report any changes in their financial status after approval. Failure to do so constitutes a breach of the Act and may result in corrective action. As part of the ongoing review, affected beneficiaries must report to their nearest SASSA local office within 30 days from the notice date for a mandatory grant review, as required by Regulation 30 of the Act. Non-compliance may result in grant suspension, and continued failure to act could lead to the permanent lapsing of the grant. The initiative aims to ensure that beneficiaries update their personal and financial information, and it forms part of SASSA's effort to correct potential inclusion errors in the current system. According to the agency, while a person may have qualified for assistance at the time of application, an improvement in financial circumstances may render them ineligible over time. SASSA has urged all beneficiaries to disclose any additional sources of income or undeclared bank accounts as soon as possible. In a related advisory, SASSA is also encouraging beneficiaries still using the green bar-coded ID book to replace it with the smart ID card, citing the increased fraud risk associated with the outdated ID format. The agency has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance approach to fraud. Should there be any evidence of SASSA officials colluding with beneficiaries to defraud the system, disciplinary and legal action will follow to preserve the integrity of the agency. ITHUBA granted last-minute 12-month temporary lottery licence
ITHUBA has confirmed that the National Lottery will continue without interruption from 1 June 2025. In a press statement issued late on Saturday evening, ITHUBA stated that: 'After careful consideration and prioritising the interests of South Africans, ITHUBA has reached an agreement with the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau, and the National Lotteries Commission to operate the South African National Lottery, ensuring its ongoing contribution to good causes. 'As a proudly 100% black-owned South African operator, ITHUBA remains steadfast in its commitment to operate the National Lottery with integrity, transparency, and for the benefit of South Africans. 'Participants can be rest assured that all games, draws, and prize pay-outs will continue as normal – with the same exciting jackpots and seamless service that they are accustomed to. 'ITHUBA continues to serve its core mandate: raising funds for the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) to uplift communities across South Africa.' Trade, Industry, and Competition Minister Parks Tau has issued a 12-month temporary licence to ITHUBA Holdings. Tau said in a statement that this is in a bid to avoid a potentially disruptive pause in operations at the National Lottery. In a statement, Tau confirmed that the 12-month appointment takes effect on Sunday, 1 June following negotiations. This comes despite the high court ruling that issuing the incumbent ITHUBA a 12-month temporary licence is unconstitutional and favoured the current operator. Tau confirmed he is appealing this judgment as another court judgment confirmed his authority to make such an appointment in the public interest. This follows concerns that ticket sales would cease until the new licence holder, Sizekhaya, could take over operations next year. Concerns were also raised about the impact on funds to charities that benefit from the National Lottery Commission.
