Germany is in deep economic crisis, says BDI industrial lobby
BERLIN, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Germany is in a deep economic crisis, Germany's BDI industry association said on Tuesday, forecasting a 0.1% contraction in gross domestic product in 2025.
A decline in 2025 would mark the first time since Germany reunified that the country has been in contraction for three years in a row.
While Europe's biggest economy contracts, the euro zone will grow by 1.1% and the global economy by 3.2%, according to the BDI, which means that Germany will remain one of the currency union's laggards in economic terms.
"The situation is very serious: Growth in industry in particular has suffered a structural break," said BDI president Peter Leibinger in Berlin on Tuesday.
The economic crisis is more than just a consequence of the pandemic and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, he said.
The problems are home-made and the result of a structural weakness since 2018 that governments have failed to tackle, Leibinger said.
"Public investment in modern infrastructure, in the transformation and the resilience of our economy, is urgently needed," Leibinger said, also calling for a reduction in bureaucracy, lower energy prices and a clear strategy for strengthening the German innovation and research landscape.
With a view to Brussels, Leibinger said it was important for Germany to take on a more self-confident leadership role again and for Europe to become more strategically independent.

BEIJING, June 9 (Reuters) - China's consumer prices fell for a fourth straight month in May while producer deflation deepened, as the economy faces headwinds from trade tensions and a prolonged housing downturn. The consumer price index dipped 0.1% last month from a year earlier, versus a 0.1% drop in April, National Bureau of Statistics data showed on Monday, slightly better than a Reuters poll forecast of a 0.2% decline. CPI slid 0.2% on a monthly basis, compared with a 0.1% increase in April, and matched economists' predictions of a 0.2% decline. The producer price index was down 3.3% in May from a year earlier, worse than a 2.7% decline in April and the deepest contraction in 22 months. That compared with an estimated 3.2% fall in a Reuters poll.

Leverkusen have been holding out for £126.4m from the very start of negotiations, which have been led by Reds sporting director Richard Hughes, but it now seems as though a compromise can finally be reached. The German side have already sold Jeremie Frimpong to Liverpool for £29.5m and they have moved a step closer to receiving a major pay day from the Premier League champions. Leverkusen are expecting a fourth and final offer for Wirtz in the next 24 hours – and that they will shake hands for £118m. That is because Liverpool have made it clear that they won't go as high as £126m and Leverkusen don't want to overplay their hand. The club knows that Wirtz has his heart set on moving to Merseyside and that they need to cash in now. Considering Liverpool started out talks with a bid of £85m (€100m), Leverkusen will still be delighted with their business, if it does indeed get concluded. Wirtz, who could earn a whopping £355,000-a-week at Liverpool, is set to play for Germany in the Nations League third-place play-off against France in Stuttgart on Sunday and wants his future sorted soon.
