India boycotts Turkey: Jamia Millia Islamia, MakeMyTrip, Udaipur traders cancel ties over pro-Pakistan stance; here's what we know

Time of India15-05-2025

Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi announced on social media that it has suspended all Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with any Turkish government-affiliated institutions. The move, effective immediately, was attributed to 'national security considerations.' The university said it 'stands firmly with the Nation' and did not specify when or if the MoUs would be restored. Moreover, the Indian government has also canceled the security clearance of Turkish ground handling company, Celebi Airport Services India Pvt. Ltd.
Travel industry sees rising cancellations to Turkey and Azerbaijan
The sentiment against Turkey and Azerbaijan is also visible in India's travel sector. Travel portal MakeMyTrip reported that bookings to Turkey and Azerbaijan have dropped by 60%, while cancellations increased by 250%. While the platform continues to offer bookings to these countries, it issued a statement supporting national sentiment and discouraging non-essential travel to both destinations.
EaseMyTrip, another major travel portal, had issued a similar advisory on May 9. Founder Nishant Pitti had publicly urged travellers to avoid Turkey and Azerbaijan due to their support for Pakistan. The company has not suspended existing bookings but reported a 22% cancellation rate for Turkey and over 30% for Azerbaijan. Turkey and Azerbaijan remain major destinations for Indian tourists—Turkey received 3.3 lakh Indian visitors in 2024, while Azerbaijan welcomed over 2.4 lakh. Despite this, the boycott has led to reduced bookings and increased awareness across social media, where hashtags like #BoycottTurkey and #BoycottAzerbaijan have been trending since May 11.
Traders halt Turkish imports, push for sanctions
The campaign has also reached trade associations in India. In Udaipur, the marble processors association has stopped importing marble from Turkey, which accounts for 70% of India's marble imports—valued at around Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,000 crore annually. Association president Kapil Surana said that all members agreed to the decision and have written to the Prime Minister urging formal sanctions.
'We fully support the historic decisions he has taken in the last few days,' Surana said, referring to India's response to the Pahalgam terror attack. General secretary Hitesh Patel added that national interest must come before business.
In Pune, traders have also joined the call by boycotting Turkish apples, contributing to the broader boycott movement that has gained support from political parties like Shiv Sena. The party had earlier called for an end to IndiGo's codeshare with Turkish Airlines and urged citizens to stop flying with the airline altogether.
Public and private sectors echo boycott calls
From academic institutions like Jamia Millia to private companies and local trader groups, the response to Turkey and Azerbaijan's stance on Pakistan has triggered a coordinated backlash across India. As the political tension continues, calls for boycotts are being echoed both online and offline, with institutions taking visible steps in response to public sentiment.

In Latest Gaffe, Nitish Kumar Mixes Up PM Modi With Ex-PM Vajpayee At Bihar Rally

Last Updated: While addressing a public gathering in Rohtas district, Nitish Kumar was elaborating about several developmental works in state. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, already under public scrutiny over several slip-ups and gaffe, caught public's attention on Friday when he mixed up Prime Minister Narendra Modi's name, in his presence, with former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee in an event in Patna. While addressing a public gathering in Rohtas district, Kumar was elaborating about several developmental works in state. While speaking, he mixed up PM Modi's name with Vajpayee. Realising the error, he quickly attempted to recover, and asked the crowd to stand and 'pranam" PM Modi, who was on stage. PM Modi on Friday launched development projects worth more than Rs 48,520 crore in Bihar's Karakat. The PM, who arrived in Patna on a two-day visit to the state on Thursday, inaugurated the four-laning of the Patna–Gaya–Dobhi section of NH–22, worth around Rs 5,520 crore and four-laning of the elevated highway and grade improvements at Gopalganj Town on NH–27 at a function here. Modi dedicated to the nation the third rail line between Son Nagar – Mohammad Ganj, worth over Rs 1,330 crore, among others. The PM also laid the foundation stone for the Nabinagar Super Thermal Power Project, Stage-II (3×800 MW) worth over Rs 29,930 crore in Aurangabad district, which will aim at ensuring energy security for Bihar and eastern India. Nitish Kumar's Previous Gaffe The latest incident was an addition to a growing list of incidents that have raised concerns over Kumar's public conduct. Earlier this week, Kumar stunned the attendees at an appointment letter distribution ceremony in Patna by placing a welcome plant on the head of Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) S Siddhartha. Kumar's unique style at the Lalit Narayan Mishra Institute had left officials and attendees both surprised and amused, triggering laughter across the venue. The moment caught everyone off guard, including ACS Siddhartha, who appeared visibly surprised. Nitish Kumar's spontaneous and unconventional gestures have frequently drawn public attention, with his offbeat behaviour over the years earning him a reputation for moments that often go viral. In March, Kumar abruptly left the stage ahead of the national anthem during the inauguration of the Sepak Takraw World Cup in Patna. In November last year, he made an attempt to touch Prime Minister Narendra Modi's feet at a public event in Darbhanga. First Published: May 30, 2025, 19:16 IST

PM's address devoid of burning issues: GA

Patna, May 30 (UNI) Accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not focusing the burning issues like corruption, unemployment, law and order, reservation, martyrs status to the soldiers and special package or special status to Bihar during his two day state visit, the Grand Alliance (GA) alleged that the PM's addressed was on the tune of his script writers. In a joint press conference of the GA, the RJD chief spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha said here on Friday that the road show of the prime minister in the state capital was devoid of any show due to poor turnout. He alleged that instead of replying to the important issues raised by the RJD, the speech of the Prime Minister contained nothing new and was far from reality. The RJD leader alleged that the investments were being made in Gujarat, whereas Bihar was being used only as a political battleground. Speaking about reservation, Jha said that the Prime Minister did not utter even a single word for incorporating the 65 percent reservation facility provision of which was made by the previous GA government of Bihar, in the 9th schedule of the constitution. The Prime Minister also did not speak even a single word on the issue of either giving special status or a special package to Bihar, he quipped. Jha further alleged that the Prime Minister, who has raised fingers several times on corruption, did not disclose why the ED had raided and the charge sheet was filed against an officer under the double-engine government of the NDA in Bihar. The RJD leader said that the valour of Indian soldiers was being widely discussed, but the Prime Minister neither met the family members of any of the martyrs nor spoke even a single word to them. He said that the leader of the opposition in Bihar assembly, Tejaswi Prasad Yadav, had demanded to give kartut status to the soldiers sacrificing their lives during operations Sindhur but this too could not get a place in the speech of the PM during his Bihar visit. On this occasion CPIML leader K.D Yadav alleged that the Prime Minister was not paying attention to the demands for central university status to the most prestigious Patna University of Bihar. The NDA government was also not working in the interest of the farmers and rural women, he alleged. CPIM Central committee member Awdhesh Kumar, outlining the plights of the farmers asked the Prime Minister to tell the time frame by which the Swaminathan Commission report would be implemented in the interest of the farmers. Vikassheel Insan Party ( VIP) National vice president V K Singh said that the Prime Minister should explain why he did not go to Kashmir from Delhi and send the message that he would take revenge for Pahalgam. CPI leader Nivedita Jha said that the entire nation was aggrieved by the Pahalgam incident, but the Prime Minister was taking political mileage out of it. She said that the issue of distributing vermilion was being raised by the BJP, while everybody knows that it is sacred for Indian women who put it in the name of their spouse to honour them.
