Whole-Of-Government Approach Needed To Tackle Sexual Literacy Issues

KOTA BHARU, April 25 (Bernama) -- Addressing issues related to reproductive health education and sexual literacy, particularly among the youth, requires a comprehensive approach involving multiple ministries and agencies, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.
He stressed that the effort was not solely the responsibility of the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) but required the mobilisation of the entire government through a whole-of-government approach.
'This is not just the MOH's responsibility, but also that of the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM), and the Ministry of Youth and Sports
'MOH will adopt a whole-of-government approach to ensure that education on reproductive health and comprehensive awareness is implemented in an integrated manner,' he told reporters after attending the Jom Sihat @ Kota Lama Mini Carnival here today.
Dzulkefly also stressed that strong support from various parties was crucial to ensure that the implementation of this agenda was not limited to Kelantan but extended nationwide.
'I am not saying that the MOH will be the only agency in charge. Instead, we want this issue to be addressed collectively. The MOH is ready to mobilise its resources and experts in the field of reproductive health education,' he said.
He said this when asked to comment on a media report on April 9, in which Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat stated that the number of rape and incest cases in Kelantan had increased, but investigations showed that many were cases of consensual sex.
Mohd Yusoff revealed that 252 cases were reported in 2024, compared to 206 cases in 2023, reflecting an increase of 22.3 percent. He added that what was more worrying was that some of those involved were as young as 10 years old.
Dzulkefly said that the key to the successful implementation of this initiative was equipping the community with knowledge and awareness so they could enhance their self-control and strengthen their moral values.

Ninth Malaysian pilgrim dies in Holy Land
MAKKAH: Another Malaysian haj pilgrim has died in the Holy Land after completing the wukuf ritual in Arafah, bringing the total to nine. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said Syed Baharom Syed Hussin, 72, died at Mina Al Wadee Hospital at 4.53am local time due to a heart attack. He said Syed Baharom, who was from Alor Setar, Kedah, had earlier received treatment at the Mina tent before he was transferred to the hospital. "Tabung Haji (TH) has contacted the pilgrim's family and will manage all matters related to the funeral arrangements and the welfare of the deceased," he said in a statement on Saturday. On behalf of TH top management, Na'im extended condolences to the deceased family, praying that his soul be blessed and his intentions in fulfilling the fifth pillar of Islam be accepted. At the same time, he said TH would continue to monitor the health of all Malaysian pilgrims throughout their stay in the Holy Land. "I would like to advise all pilgrims to take care of their health, follow the instructions of the staff, and not overexert themselves in performing physically demanding rituals such as the stoning at Jamrah, especially in this extremely hot weather," he said. – BERNAMA

Health Ministry: New Covid-19 vaccines now available
PETALING JAYA: A new batch of Covid-19 vaccines is now available, says the Health Ministry. In a post on X, it said the vaccines are available at government health clinics. 'For your information, the vaccines are new and are not from the old stocks.' The ministry posted on June 5 that the vaccines are effective against the latest variants. It added that the mRNA vaccines are from Pfizer Inc. The post has since been reposted by Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. Dzulkefly said in a separate post on X that the highly transmissible NB.1.8.1 variant has not been detected yet in Malaysia. This variant, also known as Nimbus, has been identified as the cause of the resurgence of cases in India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and the United Kingdom. In Malaysia, the JN.1 is the dominant variant currently making up 17% of the variants detected. This is followed by XEC (7.9%), KP.3 (5.2%), KP.3.1.1 & LB.1 (3.2%) and LF.7 & LP.8.1 (0.65%). Dzulkefly said each country has different dominant variants; for example, the JN.1 in Thailand (63.92%), LF.7 & NB.1.8 (66%) in Singapore and the NB.1.8.1 (XDV subvariant) (12.5%) in China. 'Globally, the top three variants are predominantly LP.8.1 (34%), JN.1 and its related sub-variants (22%) and XEC (16%). 'The World Health Organization (WHO) considers the global risk from JN.1 to be low, but its high transmission rate may cause more cases, especially in winter or where immunity is low,' he said. Dzulkefly advised the public to maintain good personal hygiene, wear face masks when unwell or in crowded environments, and receive vaccinations. Thailand has reported over 28,000 new Covid-19 cases within the span of two days. India has experienced a sudden increase in cases since late May, with the number of active infections now exceeding 5,000.
