Piastri and Norris to start Spanish GP from front row with Verstappen right behind
MONTMELO, Spain (AP) — Oscar Piastri will start the Spanish Grand Prix from pole position ahead of McLaren teammate Lando Norris on Sunday with the papaya-colored cars poised to continue their early dominance of the Formula 1 season.
Defending F1 champion Max Verstappen will start from third and will be
hard pressed to extend his winning streak
at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya to a fourth win in a row.
Piastri leads Norris by three points at the top of the points standings after they won six of the eight races so far this year. Verstappen, who has won the other two races this year, is 25 points off Piastri's lead in his Red Bull.
Mercedes' George Russell and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton will start fourth and fifth.
Piastri won from pole position in China and Bahrain, while he also pipped a pole-sitting Verstappen to win in Saudi Arabia and Miami. His only blemish was losing to Verstappen after taking pole in Imola two rounds ago.
Norris arrives after winning the Monaco GP last weekend.
Fernando Alonso
will be the only Aston Martin entry after
Lance Stroll withdrew
due to pain in his hand and wrist.
Verstappen's teammate Yuki Tsunoda will start from last place after a
disastrous qualifying session
for Red Bull's second driver.

Trial for Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco begins in Dominican Republic
PUERTO PLATA, Dominican Republic (AP) — The trial of Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco started Monday in the Dominican Republic in a sexual abuse case involving a 14-year-old girl. Franco told judges he wants justice to be done. Franco has been charged in the northern province of Puerto Plata with sexually abusing a minor, sexual and commercial exploitation against a minor, and human trafficking. Prosecutors introduced documents as pieces of evidence against the 24-year-old Franco during the first hearing, and added they will call at least seven witnesses in a trial that is expected to proceed on Thursday, Friday and next Monday. Franco heard the charges against him and could be sentenced to up to 30 years in jail. 'I heard all they said, but I wanted to say that justice must be done,' Franco told the judges. Irina Ventura, one of Franco's attorneys, said part of the evidence against her client is fraudulent and illegal. Teodosio Jaquez, another member of the player's legal team, said that the underage girl denied having sexual relations with the player. Prosecutor Claudio Cordero said all the evidence 'was obtained in a lawful manner, are self-sufficient and will lead to a conviction, which is sought by the prosecutor's office.' Franco was having an All-Star season in 2023 before Dominican authorities began investigating allegations he had been in a relationship with a minor and paid her mother thousands of dollars for her consent. The trial was initially scheduled for Dec. 12, but was postponed until June. Meadows makes season debut with Detroit Tigers after being sidelined by an arm injury
CHICAGO (AP) — Parker Meadows had a big smile on his face. It had been a long time since he had played in a major league game. Meadows was activated by the Detroit Tigers on Monday after missing the start of the season because of a nerve issue in his upper right arm. He started in center field and led off for the opener of a three-game series at the Chicago White Sox. 'I didn't sleep much last night, just thinking about the day,' Meadows said. 'Excited to be here.' The major league-leading Tigers optioned infielder/outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy to Triple-A Toledo after Sunday's 1-0 victory at Kansas City. To make room for Meadows on the 40-man roster, right-hander Ryan Cusick was designated for assignment. Meadows was injured in Detroit's spring training opener on Feb. 22 on a throw from center field. He appeared in eight rehab games in the minors beginning on May 21, batting .259 with a homer and five RBIs. 'He's a glue guy, and the guys love him,' Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. 'He played at an incredibly high level for us on both sides of the ball, and we have missed him. Our guys have done a really good job of kind of picking up the pieces and being able to adjust to life without him, but we're better with him.' Meadows, 25, hit .244 with nine homers and 28 RBIs in 82 games for Detroit last season. He also batted .269 (7 for 26) in seven postseason games, helping the Tigers reach the AL Division Series. The road back to the majors took longer than Meadows expected when he first got hurt. 'It was tough, but just put my head down and worked every day,' he said. 'We've got a really good training staff here. Keep a good head on my shoulders and they got me right.' One of the last steps for Meadows before rejoining Detroit was trying a couple of hard throws during his rehab stint. 'At first it was a little eh,' he said. 'But the more throws I made, the better it felt. It feels good now.' The return of Meadows gives Hinch another option on a versatile Tigers team that had won six of seven going into the matchup with the last-place White Sox. Javier Báez, who played an impressive center field while Meadows was out, was back at shortstop for the series opener in Chicago. Hinch said Báez is going to move around the diamond.
