Shell denies reports that the energy giant is in talks to take over BP
LONDON (AP) — British oil giant Shell on Thursday denied media reports that it is in talks to buy rival BP.
The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday said Shell was holding 'early stage talks,″ to acquire BP, citing people familiar with the matter.
'In response to recent media speculation Shell wishes to clarify that it has not been actively considering making an offer for BP and confirms it has not made an approach to, and no talks have taken place with, BP with regards to a possible offer,' Shell said in a statement to the London Stock Exchange.
Shell has repeatedly denied speculation that it was considering a takeover of its smaller rival BP, saying it was focused on streamlining and simplifying its own business.
Some analysts have suggested BP would be an attractive takeover after a plan to shift its focus to renewable energy, which was abandoned earlier this year, left its shares undervalued in comparison to other oil companies.
BP has also struggled to recover from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster, which killed 17 workers and forced the company to pay billions of dollars for environmental damage in the Gulf of Mexico.

Elon Musk reportedly fires Tesla's top sales exec
Omead Afshar, Tesla's vice president in charge of sales and manufacturing in North America and Europe, has reportedly been fired by CEO Elon Musk, according to Forbes. It's not immediately known why Musk fired Afshar, who was one of his top lieutenants and closest confidants at the company. Afshar, Musk, and Tesla did not respond to requests for comment. Afshar's departure was first reported by Bloomberg News. Afshar was posting support for the limited rollout of Tesla's robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, as recently as Tuesday. 'Absolutely historic day for Tesla,' he wrote on June 23 on X, the social media platform his former boss owns. 'Thank you, Elon, for pushing us all!' Afshar's departure comes at a time when the company's sales growth has vanished. Tesla sold fewer cars in 2024 than it did in 2023, the first annual drop since it started mass producing EVs more than a decade ago. Musk's involvement in U.S. politics has not helped, despite his recent pledge that he was leaving the Trump administration. Sales continued to struggle through the first half of 2025. The company's industry-leading profits fell 71% year-over-year in the first quarter. European sales fell nearly 28% percent year-over-year in May. Tesla will report global delivery figures for the second quarter next week, and financial results for the period in mid-July. Afshar was not a particularly public-facing executive at Tesla. He joined the company in 2017 and spent years working in the 'office of the CEO.' He took on increasing responsibilities ever since; Musk has previously credited Afshar with leading the construction of Tesla's massive factory in Austin, Texas. Not long after that, though, Afshar found himself in hot water. In 2022 he became a subject of an internal probe after he was allegedly involved in a plan to purchase special material for a glass building Musk reportedly wanted. Musk elevated him to the role of vice president in late 2024 after another top executive, Tom Zhu, moved back to China. Bloomberg News also reported Thursday that Tesla's director of HR for North America, Jenna Ferrua, is no longer with the company. She did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

US, French authorities confirm arrest of BreachForums hackers
U.S. and French authorities have confirmed the arrests of five hackers accused of being behind several major hacks and being part of a notorious cybercrime forum. On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Justice announced the indictment of British national Kai West, 25, accusing him of being 'a serial hacker' known as IntelBroker. U.S. authorities allege West is behind 'a years-long hacking scheme,' which caused more than $25 million in damages by targeting more than 40 victims, including a telecoms company, a municipal healthcare provider, and an Internet service provider. In the case of the healthcare provider, the DOJ alleges West tried to sell sensitive patient's personal information, including names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, genders, health plan and employer information. Per the DOJ, West was the leader of a hacking group known as 'CyberN[——]', referring to a racist slur, which frequented 'a particular internet forum.' While the DOJ did not name the forum, the complaint includes details that reference BreachForums, which was previously shut down by a coalition of international law enforcement agencies in 2023 and 2024. The DOJ press release said West was arrested in France earlier in February and is now facing extradition to the United States. According to the complaint against West, the CyberN[——] group included four other individuals whom U.S. authorities have not named. 'This week's arrests targeted the individuals suspected of being the site's main administrators, and raised hopes of its permanent closure,' said Beccuau, according to a translation of the press release. The prosecutor also confirmed West, only named in the statement as IntelBroker, had been arrested in France in February, which aligns with what U.S. authorities announced on Thursday. When reached for comment, a spokesperson for the French prosecutor's office referred TechCrunch to its published statement. In response to a question about the four unnamed co-conspirators, U.S. Justice Department spokesperson Nicholas Biase said he couldn't comment on 'uncharged individuals,' and declined to clarify in a follow-up email. BreachForums was one of the most well-known hacking forums on the internet, where cybercriminals sold hacking tools, as well as advertised, sold, and traded data stolen from companies, such as 23andMe, and many others. In 2023, U.S. federal authorities seized and shut down BreachForums, three months after arresting its administrator, Conor Brian Fitzpatrick, also known as 'Pompompurin.' The site then re-launched, but it was seized and shut down again in 2024. West is charged with conspiracy to commit computer intrusions, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, accessing a protected computer to obtain information, and wire fraud.

Tesla Tenure Afshar joined Tesla in 2017, according to his LinkedIn profile, as the carmaker was beginning to ramp up production of the Model 3 sedan. 'I was with Elon nearly every single day during Model 3 hell,' he says in a post on X, the social media platform that Musk owns. 'This included Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Eve, his birthday and nearly missing his brother's wedding.' Afshar was posting regularly on social media in recent days, including several messages this week praising the robotaxi launch. The executive oversaw the construction of Tesla's plant in Austin. A member of the office of the CEO since 2017, his most recent job title was listed on his LinkedIn page as a cowboy hat emoji.
