Nigerian TikTok Star 'Sprayed' Money Into Air At A Party, Jailed For 6 Months

NDTV29-05-2025

A Nigerian court on Wednesday sentenced a popular TikToker to six months in jail for "spraying" the local naira currency into the air at a party, a common local celebratory practice.
Murja Kunya, a TikToker from northern Nigerian city of Kano with more than a million followers was sentenced by a federal high court in the city after pleading guilty to the offence, court documents show.
Justice Simon Amobeda gave Kunya an option of 50,000 naira ($33) fine and gave an order appointing her as an online campaigner against naira abuse using her huge following on social media.
Kunya, a 26-year old social media influencer, has earned notoriety for serially running afoul with the law for her online videos deemed immoral by authorities in the predominantly Muslim conservative city.
Her offensive videos led to her several arrests and arraignment in court by the Sharia police called Hisbah.
She was arrested by Nigeria's anti-graft agency, the EFCC, in January after an online video showed her spraying naira notes in a hotel room in the city, an act prohibited under Nigerian law.
The social media influencer was granted administrative bail by the EFCC but absconded and failed to appear in court for arraignment.
She was rearrested in March, after weeks of hide-and-seek with EFCC operatives and arraigned in court where she pleaded guilty.
Celebrating with bank notes, known as "spraying", is common at Nigerian weddings and parties, but prohibited by law for insulting the national naira currency.
Since last year the EFCC has been enforcing a 2007 law outlawing the abuse and mutilation of the naira, while critics say the law is being selectively enforced.
Several celebrities have been arrested and taken to court under the law which provides for up to six months jail term and a 50,000 naira fine.

Nigerian woman held for overstay; homeowner of rented flat, real estate agent booked

Pune city police have booked the owner of an apartment in Kondhwa along with a real estate agent for allegedly failing to submit the information of a Nigerian woman residing illegally at the spot on rental basis. Meanwhile, the Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) of Pune city police has also initiated action against a Nigerian woman, as she was allegedly found to be overstaying in India even after her visa period expired. DCP (zone 5) Rajkumar Shinde said that the FRO got information about an overstaying Nigerian woman residing in an apartment behind Ajmera Hotel in Kondhwa. The FRO passed on the information to the Kondhwa police station. A police team then questioned the owner of the apartment about the Nigerian tenant. The homeowner told the police that he rented his apartment to the foreigner woman through a real estate agent Adnan Bohra (29) of Bhagyoday Nagar in Kondhwa, stated a press release issued on Thursday. Further probe revealed that no rent agreement was prepared and the mandatory police verification procedure was not followed while giving the apartment on rent to the Nigerian woman. Also, police said as per the norms, the homeowner and real estate agent were supposed to submit the C-form, carrying details of the said foreign national, while renting an apartment to her. For causing violation of this norm, an offence has been registered against the house owner and real estate agent as per section 223 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 3 (5) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), at the Kondhwa police station on Wednesday. Senior police inspector Vinay Patankar said that further investigation is on.

"Justice has been served," says BJP's Suvendu Adhikari after Sharmistha Panoli gets interim bail

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 5 (ANI): After Calcutta High Court granted interim bail to law student Sharmistha Panoli, West Bengal Assembly Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday said, 'justice has been served today'. In a post on X, Suvendu Adhikari said, 'Justice has been served today - Sharmistha Panoli, a law student, aged about 22 years, has been released on interim bail by the Hon'ble High Court at Calcutta.' He called her arrest 'police atrocities' and said she was wrongly arrested for exercising her right to free speech. He accused Kolkata Police of acting to please political leaders. 'This is a case of police atrocities as an innocent young lady, for using her freedom of speech and expression, has been illegally arrested by the Kolkata Police and was sent to judicial custody. This is yet another example of police overzealousness and eagerness to please their political masters,' the post reads. The court directed her to cooperate with the investigation, not leave the country, and furnished bail on a personal bond of Rs 10,000. The court also ordered appropriate police protection for her. Meanwhile, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul and West Bengal BJP Legal Cell member Sanjukta Samanta filed an FIR against Wazahat Khan, who filed an FIR against Sharmistha Panoli, at two Police Stations, Ballygunje Police Station, Kolkata and Howrah Police Station. Paul said there should be equal rights and rules for every community. Speaking to ANI, Agnimitra Paul said, 'Yes, I have filed a police complaint against Wazahat Khan, who filed a police complaint against Sharmistha Panoli. I believe that Dr BR Ambedkar Ji's constitution is applicable in West Bengal, and there should be equal rights and rules for every Khan, who complained against Sharmistha Panoli, had posted an abusive post against our goddess Maa Kamakhya and Lord Krishna. If a Muslim is insulting my god and goddess, the same action needs to be taken for Wazahat Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has sent his police force to arrest Wazahat Khan, Mamata Banerjee's police, because of her Muslim appeasement, have been hiding and shielding Wazahat Khan...' The 22-year-old law student from Pune, Sharmistha Panoli, was arrested by Kolkata Police in Gurugram on May 30, for allegedly hurting religious sentiments with a video on Operation Sindoor. "No equivalence": Shashi Tharoor expresses scepticism on mediation in conflicts involving terrorism

New York [US], June 5 (ANI): Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who is leading an all-party delegation to the United States on Thursday, expressed scepticism about the role of mediation in conflicts involving terrorism, emphasising that there can be no equivalence between terrorists and their victims. Tharoor stressed that there's no moral or factual equivalence between countries harbouring terrorism and those affected by it. When asked if it is helpful to have the United States available as a mediator between India and Pakistan, Tharoor said, 'Mediation is not a term that we are particularly willing to entertain. You're implying an equivalence that simply doesn't exist. There is no equivalence between terrorists and their victims. There is no equivalence between a country that provides a safe haven to terrorism and a country that's a flourishing multi-party democracy that's trying to get on with its business.' He highlighted the complexities of international diplomacy, suggesting that any influence the US might have had would be more effective if applied to the side supporting terrorism. He acknowledged the US government's interest and concern, noting that diplomatic efforts might have been more impactful if directed at the party supporting terrorist activities. Tharoor speculated that the US might have had more influence on the side that needed persuading to stop supporting terrorism. 'My government received a number of calls at high levels from the US government and we appreciated their concern and their interest. At the same time, they must have been making similar calls at the highest levels to the Pakistan side. Because that's the side that needed persuading to stop this process, that may well have been where their messages really had the greatest effect. But that's guesswork on my part. I don't know what they said to the Pakistanis...,' said Tharoor. Speaking about how India, time and again, conveyed information through proper and authentic channels of communication, Tharoor noted that the Indian side had regular, systematic briefings by civil and military officers. He brought to attention that the briefings were conducted by women officers from the military, one of whom is a Muslim, thereby stating, 'This is not a Hindu versus Muslim, it is United India against terror, and that message came across very well'. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor is leading the all-party delegation which includes Shambhavi Chaudhary (Lok Janshakti Party), Sarfaraz Ahmed (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha), G M Harish Balayogi (Telugu Desam Party), Shashank Mani Tripathi, Tejaswi Surya, and Bhubaneswar Kalita (all from the BJP), Mallikarjun Devda (Shiv Sena), former Indian Ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu, and Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora. The all-party delegation reached the US after completing their visit to Brazil. Their purpose is to brief key US stakeholders on Operation Sindoor, India's diplomatic effort launched to combat terrorism and disinformation following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
