Are you a historian? High Court blasts Kamal Haasan for Kannada remark
The Karnataka High Court heavily criticised actor Kamal Haasan while hearing a petition filed by him seeking directions to ensure the release and screening of his upcoming film Thug Life in the state.Justice M Nagaprasanna questioned Haasan's refusal to apologise for the statement, observing that it had hurt public sentiment. 'No citizen has the right to hurt sentiments,' the judge said, adding, 'Water, land and language — Jala, Nila, Bashe — are important to citizens. The division of this country was on linguistic lines.'advertisementHaasan's petition came after widespread backlash over his recent controversial remark, 'Kannada was born out of Tamil'. The comment sparked criticism from political leaders and protests by pro-Kannada groups across Karnataka.
The judge criticised the actor's stance and remark questioning his responsibility as a public figure. 'No language can be born out of another. Where is the material to support this (claim)? And what has happened? Disharmony. And what have the people of Karnataka asked? (Only) an apology.'Justice Nagaprasanna also questioned Haasan's claim. 'The circumstances were created by Kamal Haasan, and he has said he will not apologise? You have undermined the sentiment of the people of Karnataka ... On what basis? Are you a historian? Or a linguist?'Appearing for the petitioner and representing the film's producer, senior advocate Dhyan Chinappa submitted that the actor's statement could be viewed by the court just once, and added that it was not intended to offend or that it was not so drastically wrong.advertisementTo this, Justice Nagaprasanna responded strongly: '(If you won't apologise) Why do you want the film to run in Karnataka? Leave it. Freedom of expression cannot be stretched to hurting sentiments of a mass. You apologise, then no problem. You want to earn some crores from Karnataka also.'The court also questioned the actor's decision to seek protection from the police despite having caused the unrest. 'Now you are here for a commercial interest, that police should protect for a situation created by you! One apology would have solved everything. In law, we will consider. But look at the attitude!'The court also observed that Haasan could have issued a clarification, saying, 'I have made a statement without looking into the history.' Recalling a similar incident, the judge said, 'Rajagopal Acharya had apologised for a similar statement decades ago. Language is a sentiment attached to people. You have said something to undermine that.'The High Court made these observations while hearing the petition, but is yet to issue a ruling on the petition, although has asked Haasan to consider apologising. The hearing was adjourned to 2.30 pm.Reacting to the court's observations, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister said, 'Hope Kamal listens to the court. But we also shouldn't be too adamant.'

'Thug Life' box office collection day 1 early estimate: Kamal Haasan starrer struggles to beat 'Indian 2's opening day collection
's much-anticipated action drama 'Thug Life', directed by , hit the big screens today (June 5), and the film received lukewarm responses from both fans and critics despite considerable buzz. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Early estimates suggest that the film managed to earn Rs 17 crore at the domestic box office by 10 pm, which is nowhere near Kamal's recent film 'Indian 2's first-day box office collection. Box office collection of Indian 2 and Thug Life According to Sacnilk, 'Indian 2' had recorded Rs 25.6 crore on its opening day, despite being labelled a box office failure. It appears that 'Thug Life' may fall short of the mark and fail to surpass 'Indian 2's opening day collection. Official figures are still awaited from the makers, with only a few hours remaining. Occupancy rate Occupancy rates for the Tamil version of Thug Life showed a gradual decline throughout the day. Overall occupancy stood at 48.72% on Thursday. Morning shows saw a 50.66% turnout, which dipped slightly to 50.35% in the afternoon. Evening shows witnessed a more noticeable drop to 45.15%. Among all regions, Pondicherry registered the highest occupancy at 69.33%. Kamal Haasan Faces Ban in Karnataka Over Kannada Language Row, Minister Demands Apology | Thug Life Unfortunately, the film is not expected to rank among the top Tamil openers of 2025. So far this year, Ajith Kumar's 'Good Bad Ugly' holds the top spot with Rs 28.15 crore, followed by Vidaamuyarchi at Rs 25.5 crore. However, 'Thug Life' may still outperform Suriya's Retro, which had a Rs 17.25 crore opening day collection. Thug Life controversy The film has reportedly faced a ban in Karnataka, triggered by comments made by Kamal Haasan during a promotional appearance. 'Your language (Kannada) was born out of Tamil,' he had said. The statement drew sharp criticism from pro-Kannada groups and resulted in widespread backlash. Haasan stood firm and refused to apologise, which only intensified the dispute and led to the film being pulled from screens in the region. 'Thug Life' also stars , TR Silambarasan, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal, and Mahesh Manjrekar in key roles.

"Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah, Dy CM directly responsible for tragic stampede": Karnataka LoP R Ashoka
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 5 (ANI): Following the death of 11 people in the Bengaluru stampede, Leader of Opposition in Karnataka Assembly, R Ashoka, on Thursday, alleged that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Dy CM DK Shivakumar are directly responsible for the mishap. 'Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar are directly responsible for the tragic stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium and its surroundings,' he said. Ashoka demanded that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by a High Court judge probe the incident. Speaking at a press conference, he stated, 'We will not accept an investigation by the District Collector. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) is being filed before the High Court Chief Justice. The investigation must be conducted under the supervision of a High Court judge, and an SIT should be formed for this purpose. The report must be submitted directly to the High Court. Justice must be delivered for all these deaths, and those responsible must be punished.' He criticised CM Siddaramaiah for evading responsibility by claiming it was a Cricket Association event and attempting to cover up his mistakes. Ashoka demanded that CM Siddaramaiah and Dy CM DK Shivakumar take moral responsibility and resign. 'How can District Collectors, who work under the CM and report to him, conduct an impartial investigation? They were responsible for planning the event, finalising its framework, and making preparations. It's impossible to believe they would honestly investigate the government's lapses and errors. Deceiving the public and causing deaths is bad enough, but why are they now resorting to self-deception and adding to their sins? Only a judicial probe can deliver justice to innocent lives and their parents. The Congress government must not stoop to such pettiness even in the face of death,' R Ashoka asserted. 'Those who celebrated by lifting the cup and posing for photos didn't show up to carry the bodies of the innocent victims. Those who took selfies at the airport didn't visit the homes of the deceased to shed tears. Those who honoured cricketers with turbans and garlands didn't come to put soil on the graves of the dead. In this heartless government, the lives of ordinary people have no value,' he said. Meanwhile, on Thursday, the Karnataka High Court notified the state government about the stampede and listed the matter for hearing again on June 10. The High Court took suo motu cognisance of the incident and asked for a further status report. 'We have expressed ourselves to the Advocate General and he has filed a status report, which is taken on record. Registry is directed to register this suo-motu cognisance as a suo-moto WP. Relist on 10th June, Tuesday,' the Court said. (ANI)

Kannada Sahitya Parishat seeks Karnataka High Court's permission to intervene in plea on Thug Life release
The Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP) on Thursday filed an application in the High Court of Karnataka seeking permission to intervene in the petition filed by Raaj Kamal Films International on the issue of releasing Tamil film Thug Life in Karnataka, after controversy cropped up owing to actor Kamal Haasan's statement that 'Kannada is born out of Tamil'. In its application, the KSP has said that 'being a primary stakeholder in preserving the integrity, history, and respect of Kannada language, it seeks to intervene to present relevant historical, linguistic, and constitutional aspects concerning Kannada's independent linguistic identity and cultural stranding.' The KSP further said that it would bring to the notice of the court the constitutional, cultural, and linguistic concerns arising from the statement of Mr. Haasan and the directions sought by the producer of the film particularly from the perspective of protecting the identity, dignity, and historical legacy of Kannada language and culture. Contending that Mr. Haasan's statement was made without factual backing or academic support, the KSP has stated that 'the language is heart and soul of the land and hence called sacred mother tongue. Bracketing language in terms of seniority or superiority is akin to comparing sacred motherhood which is totally unacceptable in a civilised society.' Mr. Haasan's letter to Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, which had demanded his apology, does not contain any categorical apology, the KSP said. It further said that freedom of speech and expression is not absolute as it comes with reasonable restrictions. The application is likely to come up for hearing when the petition is posted for further hearing on June 13. Earlier in the week, Mr. Haasan had chosen not to tender an apology for his statement, despite a suggestion made in this regard by the High Court to put an end to the controversy. Raaj Kamal Films International had filed a petition seeking police protection for release of the movie owing to opposition from Kannada organisations and the KFCC. The company stated that it is not willing to screen the movie in Karnataka unless an encouraging dialogue takes place with the KFCC.
