'It's pathetic': Latrell and Spencer Leniu under fire over rule breach in NSW camp

Yahoo19-05-2025

Leading NRL journalist David Riccio has slammed Latrell Mitchell and Spencer Leniu for boycotting the media and refusing to speak publicly in State of Origin camp with NSW. Mitchell hasn't spoken to the media for about nine months, with club team Souths keen for him to focus on footy and block out the outside noise.
It appears to be doing the trick, with Mitchell in good form for the Rabbitohs and earning his selection for the Blues. As for Leniu, the Roosters have also allowed him to shy away from the media in recent weeks after the situation with Johnathan Thurston. Leniu was spotted in a heated confrontation with Thurston on the field after a Roosters game last month, but hasn't fronted the media since.
With Mitchell and Leniu picked in the NSW squad for Game 1, the Rabbitohs and Roosters contacted NSW Rugby League to inform them of the players' desire not to do any media. NSWRL officials are said to be happy with the stance if it means Mitchell and Leniu can remain focused on the game and play their best, and have left it up to the NRL to enforce rules around media commitments.
The stance is actually a breach of NRL rules, and league officials have the power to step in and order they front the media. Under NRL rules, all players must be made available to talk to the media every three weeks, however it's rarely enforced and players dodge for months at a time.
The current stance goes against the mantra of previous NSW coach Brad Fittler, who insisted no player was given special treatment. Fittler felt that if players couldn't handle questions from the media, they wouldn't be able to deal with the rigours of State of Origin. Michael Maguire adopted that stance last year, but new coach Daley evidently hasn't.
Riccio tore the move to shreds on SEN radio on Tuesday morning, saying it robs fans of hearing from their favourite players and does nothing to help the promotion of the game. "What a narrow-minded view it is to think this is a good thing for the game," Riccio said.
"What's stopping the rest of the NSW team - Dylan Edwards, Nathan Cleary, Payne Haas etc - from deciding 'no I'm not doing media'. And they're within their rigts now because two players have done it. There's nothing stopping them."
Riccio revealed it was a similar situation before Game 3 of the women's State of Origin series, when only the captains and coaches of NSW and Queensland made themselves available to the media. "It doesn't work," Riccio said. "Last week with the women's State of Origin - both Queensland and NSW - it was pathetic. It was non-existent.
"Journalists were knocked back as far as opportunities were concerned, and guess how many people turned up (to the game)? In Sydney, where it is always a tough sell, only 15,000 people."

Riccio said State of Origin won't survive unless it is advertised and promoted properly. "Don't count your chickens," he said. "This game thrives on exposure and promotion of it. Adidas - the major sponsor of the NSW Blues - pays hundreds of thousands of dollars so Latrell Mitchell can be standing on the back page of the paper in a Blues jersey. We have to be careful with the greatest product we have."
Leading commentator Andrew Voss said NSW coach Daley should step in and lay down the law to players about their media obligations. And Greg Alexander described the situation with the women's teams as "outrageous" and "bizarre".
When asked about Leniu's boycott on Monday, Roosters and NSW teammate Angus Crichton said: "He is just dialled in and ready to focus on helping us get the win. I didn't even notice he wasn't doing media and I think if that is what is going to get the best out of Spence on game day, then I am all for it.'
And Nathan Cleary said of Mitchell: "At the end of the day, all of us as NSW fans and players, we want Latrell to be at his best come Wednesday night. If that's what he needs to do, that's what he needs to do."
Discussing Mitchell's self-imposed ban on Triple M radio on Saturday, Nathan Hindmarsh also questioned what was stopping every other player from doing the same. And Wade Graham said players need to be aware they're speaking to the fans rather than the journalists themselves.

Maroons name new captain after DCE axed

Cameron Munster has jumped over his club captain and been named the new Queensland skipper ahead of the second State of Origin clash in Perth. The 30-year-old one-time wild child but permanent larrikin replaces Daly Cherry-Evans, who was axed as halfback and captain after the opening loss to NSW at Suncorp Stadium. Munster was picked by coach Billy Slater ahead of his Melbourne Storm captain and Maroons teammate Harry Grant as well as Gold Coast Titans skipper Tino Fa'asuamaleaui. The clash in Perth on Wednesday will be Munster's 20th Origin appearance for Queensland, having won the Wally Lewis Medal as player of the series in 2020. Slater also confirmed Canterbury Bulldogs forward Kurt Mann would play his first game for Queensland in a new-look team that has to beat the Blues to force a game three decider to avoid losing a second straight series.

Keith Mitchell's 90-yard scoop and score is the Saints Play of the Day

Keith Mitchell's 90-yard scoop and score is the Saints Play of the Day Keith Mitchell turned the tide against the Panthers Our countdown to the start of the New Orleans Saints' regular season is on Day 90, which means this 90-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Keith Mitchell is the Saints Play of the Day. The linebacker game through in a big spot for the Saints back in 2000, during a grudge match with the division-rival Carolina Panthers. This game went back and forth, and for a while the Saints couldn't seem to get out of their way -- an early one-handed interception by defensive lineman Darren Howard was returned deep into Carolina territory, only to get punched out of the end zone, resulting in a touchback. On the same play he ran for his first 1,000-yard season with the Saints, Ricky Williams went down with a broken ankle that sidelined him until the playoffs. But Mitchell scooped up a fumble forced by Sammy Knight, lowered the boom on a Panthers player who tried to stop him, and took off for a 90-yard touchdown return, which you can see here. That proved to be the deciding score in a 20-10 win on the road for New Orleans. And it was a big highlight for Mitchell's 2000 season, which ended with him going to the Pro Bowl. He always seemed to be in the right place at the right time, recovering four fumbles, breaking up five passes, and intercepting another one that he returned for a 40-yard touchdown. He had 6.5 sacks, too, going down in the Saints record books as one of the more underrated linebackers in team history.

Lesser-mentioned Ravens star lands on CBS Sports list of 2025 breakout stars

Lesser-mentioned Ravens star lands on CBS Sports list of 2025 breakout stars Ravens running back Keaton Mitchell earns national spotlight in new NFL prediction from CBS Sports It's too early to make predictions. It's only June, but even though the mind says 'don't get excited', the heart, more often than not, refuses to listen. This Baltimore Ravens team looks good on paper, and even though games aren't played on looseleaf, every glance at the roster produces adrenaline. This team sent 11 of its players to the Pro Bowl last season. All of them are back. DeAndre Hopkins was added during free agency. Malaki Starks and Mike Green were drafted. The new faces have an opportunity to add more punch to an already formidable roster. Then again, so do some of the guys who have already been here. May we present Keaton Mitchell for your consideration? CBS Sports names Keaton Mitchell as a player to watch Mention the Ravens and why they are a Super Bowl contender, and several names may come up before a backup running back. Keaton Mitchell was added to Baltimore's roster as an undrafted rookie free agent. Pro Football Focus named him as one of the NFL's best UDFA prospects during that offseason. CBS Sports recently named him as an under-the-radar player to watch in their dig on one player from each team who could make a surprising impact. Tyler Sullivan wrote this one up and did a great job. Here's some of his reasoning for mentioning Mitchell as the Ravens representative. "For a six-week stretch during the 2023 season, Mitchell was a lightning rod. The back averaged 8.4 yards per rush and 10.5 yards per reception. However, that run ended when he suffered a torn ACL that also put a dent in his 2024 campaign. Now, Mitchell is back healthy and noted recently that he feels 'like I'm back better than when I first got to Baltimore'. Of course, Derrick Henry will carry the bulk of the work out of the Ravens' backfield, but Mitchell could prove to be a change-of-pace option with home run ability for what is already one of the best rushing attacks in the NFL." Henry and Mitchell could provide some 'thunder and lightning'. The latter is no stranger to adversity or this Ravens offense. An undrafted rookie free agent selected after the 2023 NFL Draft, Pro Football Focus named him as one of the best UDFAs taken that offseason, but two days after making the 53-man roster, he found his way to the injured reserve. He returned in Week 6 and appeared in eight games with two starts before seeing his season end with a torn ACL. He began last season on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list but was activated for Week 10. For his career, he has notched 426 yards and two TDs on 62 carries. Keep an eye on him as the Ravens begin another run, and expect some big moments because even though the opportunities will be limited, he'll be able to deliver a few.
