Meet the owners of Edinburgh's new female-owned visitor centre

Sarah Lachhab and Mathilde Marcoux have launched their centre, Source Edinburgh, to provide maps, guides and Scottish-made crafts to the city's tourists after the VisitScotland iCentre on the Royal Mile was shut down in February.
Speaking with the Sunday National, Lachhab explained why she and Marcoux decided to set up Source, the focus on selling artisan products made exclusively in Scotland and the biggest issues facing Edinburgh tourists – hint: it's not an excess of free public toilets.

Lachhab, an established tour guide in Scotland, explained the origins of Source: 'Mathilde and I already run a business called Wee Ecosse, where we offer walking tours through Edinburgh in French.
'Our first business grew little by little, and we were in need of having a space to operate from. We started thinking that if we were going to lease somewhere, it'd be better if it was accessible to the public so we could create a new revenue stream to fund it by having a little ticket office and an artisan shop.
'As we were developing our ideas, we heard that, sadly, VisitScotland were closing down all of their iCentres. I'm a big believer in those places, so we thought that, as tour guides, it was a natural step for us to open one of our own.'
Sarah Lachhab said she was a 'big believer' in the iCentres and was sad to see them close down (Image: Gordon Terris) A former VisitScotland employee herself, Lachhab understood that tourists in the digital age are more likely to use their mobile phones for things visitor centres previously had an edge over. Source has welcomed over one thousand visitors since its opening in West Parliament Square, facing St Giles' Cathedral, last month; a humble figure compared to foot traffic on the Royal Mile, but she and Marcoux are both firm believers in slow tourism and slow business.
She said: 'Not a lot of people know about us, but we think it's so important to be able to provide services for tourists who need it most – like maps, for example, for someone whose phone doesn't have any data.
'We don't feel the need to grow super fast. We're a self-funded business and we want to be sustainable.'
Unlike many of the tourist-trap gift shops on the Royal Mile, Source focuses on procuring goods for their shop from strictly Scottish manufacturers – candles from Ayrshire, soaps from Angus, baskets from Stornoway, Edinburgh-made shortbread and tartan accessories made by independent kiltmakers.

She said: 'The biggest question we get asked is actually, 'where can I find a toilet?'. Edinburgh has a real lack of public toilets, so one of my biggest wishes for summer is that the council will add more that aren't in the Old Town so I can direct people to them.
'I also want our staff to be as trained to answer questions as genuinely as possible. I'm not a native English speaker, but we offer information in so many different languages – French, German, Korean, Spanish, Italian and, of course, English.
'We want to be accessible to as many people as possible and bringing diversity to the Mile is something we're really proud of. Maybe we are a little crazy trying to do business here, but we love it.'

The company announced on Monday it will run five services a day from the spring after its plans were approved by rail regulators. It said the new Stirling service would give Larbert, Greenfaulds, near Cumbernauld, and Whifflet, near Coatbridge, their first London link. Passengers will travel in five class 222 six-carriage trains which will also call at Motherwell, Lockerbie, Carlisle, Preston, Crewe, Nuneaton, Milton Keynes and London Euston. The new service will see it compete for passengers on the English section of the west coast line with sister firm Avanti West Coast, which is also owned by FirstGroup. Open access operators are concerned about their future under the Labour UK Government, which is nationalising English train firms, but the Conservatives said such operators should be "championed". University unveils plans for £35m brewing and distilling ‘centre for excellence'

A Scottish university is aiming to raise £35 million for a 'world-renowned' Centre for Sustainable Brewing and Distilling to help the alcohol industry deal with the climate crisis. Heriot-Watt University, based in Edinburgh, already has an International Centre for Brewing and Distilling (ICBD), which since 1989 has been considered the world's leading educational establishment for courses in brewing and distilling. However its history of teaching brewing dates back more than a century, to 1903. Many of the best-known Scotch whisky master distillers and brewers – including BrewDog co-founder Martin Dickie, master distiller at Arbikie Highland Estate Kirsty Black, and David Wilkinson, head distiller at Edinburgh Gin – studied at the ICBD. The new centre is intended to function as a living laboratory, constructed with low-carbon materials with the aim to access all of its power through clean energy. The Centre for Sustainable Brewing and Distilling (CSBD) will embrace the latest green technologies and sustainable practices so Heriot-Watt can evolve its teaching and research to meet the challenges of the future. It is hoped to include plug-and-play brewing and distilling testbeds, enabling companies to trial production methods before full-scale adoption, as well as advanced sustainability research labs to develop low-carbon distillation techniques. The CSBD will offer specialist training programmes, including graduate apprenticeships, executive education, and research-led industry collaborations. Professor Gillian Murray, Heriot-Watt's deputy principal for business and enterprise, said: 'Heriot-Watt's association with teaching brewing and distilling dates back to 1903. 'However, it was over 35 years ago that our unique brewing and distilling teaching and research facility – recognised by the Institute of Brewing and Distilling – was established. 'Ever since it has been home to vibrant research and unique innovation that has revolutionised both industries. Our teaching provides the perfect breeding ground for ground-breaking new ideas from the brightest and best students – from use of raw materials and fermentation to chemical engineering, bottling, packaging and marketing. 'But we have big aspirations for the future. That is why we are unveiling a revamped and revitalised approach to academic research into brewing and distilling through a new world-renowned centre for excellence, the Centre for Sustainable Brewing and Distilling. 'We want to encourage people from around the world to help us fund this multimillion-pound vision that sets the next generation of brilliant minds the challenge of finding ever more economically-viable and environmentally-sustainable ways of driving both industries forward into the 22nd century.' Ewan Andrew, president of global supply chain at drinks company Diageo, said: 'We back Heriot-Watt's plans for a Centre for Sustainable Brewing and Distilling. The CSBD will provide a new, modern environment for innovation, support the development of groundbreaking sustainable processes, and develop a new highly-skilled workforce that helps future-proof this vitally important economic contributor for decades to come.' Jo Marshall, brand director at Carlsberg Britvic, which owns McEwan's Export, said: 'Over a century ago, McEwan's founder William McEwan collaborated with the university's very first professor of brewing, Emil Westergaard, to drive forward brewing innovation. 'It's inspiring to see that same pioneering spirit lives on today in plans for a new centre dedicated to sustainable talent development and innovation.'

More info A Scottish man who attempted to climb Mount Everest as a tribute to his late dad had to turn back within sight of the summit after coming face to face with climbers who had died while trying to reach it. Adventurous Tony Smith, 55, travelled to Nepal to try and scale the world's highest mountain, but the former Royal Marine and retired firefighter was forced to turn back just 800 metres from the hard to reach summit, reports The Daily Record. Tony said: "Several avalanches had raised concerns by the time I got closer to Camp Four, 800 metres short of the final summit. "There had been five fatalities – two of whom I encountered going up – and extreme weather conditions and I had to cancel the attempt. I saw a gentleman crouched down as if he was taking photographs and I thought he was getting some nice pictures. "But as I got closer I could see that he wasn't moving. He was dead, frozen and still attached to a safety line, perfectly preserved in a crouched position. "That startled me. I also passed a gentleman and a lady who were going up and he was concerned and I thought he was helping with his oxygen tank. Later I heard the woman had died. "Another person had reached the summit but died on the way back down and there had been five fatalities." Mount Everest stands at 8848.86 metres. In total, around 350 people have died attempting to climb Everest and the death toll continues to rise each year. Tony flew out on April 7. His trek to the Everest base camp took eight days before he started the climb, which took five weeks. The dad-of-three said: "I had been saving up for 10 years and I had a little money from my dad's inheritance. I saw my dad take his last breath and it made me realise life was short. I thought: 'What am I waiting for?'." Recalling one of the scariest moments of the climb, he said: "On one occasion I put my foot through a crevasse and I went through and plummeted down and fortunately my fall was broken by rocks below. "If you fall into one of those crevasses you're not coming back. There was nothing beneath me other than a 40ft dip. I'd been scaling a cliff face that was 200 metres vertical and I was done in. "I had no oxygen left, the sun was going down and I thought, 'I'm done here'. Fortunately one of the guides came and supplied me with a fresh oxygen tank and pulled me out of the gully. "If he hadn't come and got me I would have been one of those fatalities. That is why I didn't go for the summit." The climb was so. arduous and harrowing that Tony says he has no intention of reliving the experience. Tony, from Ayrshire, added: "The risk while climbing Everest far outweighed my time in Northern Ireland or Iraq. The slopes, the lack of oxygen, getting through some of the rock faces. "I felt like there was more opportunity for me to not return from Everest than from Northern Ireland or Iraq and I wouldn't want to experience that again.
