Coinbase breach linked to customer data leak in India, sources say

WASHINGTON: Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase knew as far back as January about a customer data leak at an outsourcing company connected to a larger breach estimated to cost up to $400 million, six people familiar with the matter told Reuters.
At least one part of the breach, publicly disclosed in a May 14 SEC filing, occurred when an India-based employee of the U.S. outsourcing firm TaskUs was caught taking photographs of her work computer with her personal phone, according to five former TaskUs employees.
Three of the employees and a person familiar with the matter said Coinbase was notified immediately.
The ex-employees said they were briefed on the matter by company investigators or colleagues who witnessed the incident in the Indian city of Indore, noting that the woman and a suspected accomplice were alleged to have been feeding Coinbase customer information to hackers in return for bribes.
The ex-employees and person familiar with the matter said more than 200 TaskUs employees were soon fired in a mass layoff that drew Indian media attention.
Coinbase had previously blamed 'support agents overseas' for the breach, which it estimated could cost up to $400 million.
Although the link between TaskUs and the breach was previously alleged in a lawsuit filed last week in federal court in Manhattan, details of the incident, reported here for the first time, raise further questions over when Coinbase first learned of the incident.

Coinbase said in the May SEC filing that it knew contractors accessed employee data 'without business need' in 'previous months.' Only when it received an extortion demand on May 11 did it realize that the access was part of a wider campaign, the company said.
In a statement to Reuters on Wednesday, Coinbase said the incident was recently discovered and that it had 'cut ties with the TaskUs personnel involved and other overseas agents, and tightened controls.'
Coinbase did not disclose who the other foreign agents were.
TaskUs said in a statement that two employees had been fired early this year after they illegally accessed information from a client, which it did not identify.
'We immediately reported this activity to the client,' the statement said. 'We believe these two individuals were recruited by a much broader, coordinated criminal campaign against this client that also impacted a number of other providers servicing this client.'
The person familiar with the matter confirmed that Coinbase was the client and that the incident took place in January.
Reuters could not determine whether any arrests have been made. Police in Indore did not return a message seeking comment.

China's yuan holds firm as traders await US-China talks

HONG KONG: China's yuan hovered around its strongest level against the US dollar in nearly two weeks on Thursday, buoyed by persistent weakness in the greenback as markets awaited further clarity on trade negotiations and potential tariff developments. The yuan eased 0.1% after touching 7.1720, its strongest since May 26. Its offshore counterpart was also down about 0.1% in Asian trade. Investors were cautious after US President Donald Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping was tough and 'extremely hard to make a deal with'. Markets are now awaiting the results of a phone call between the two leaders this week and any further insights into potential tariff developments. Prior to the market opening, the People's Bank of China set the midpoint rate at 7.1865 per dollar, 103 pips weaker than a Reuters estimate, signalling the central bank's intent to maintain stability in the yuan and temper rapid appreciation. The spot yuan is allowed to trade 2% either side of the fixed midpoint each day. Yuan falls to 2007 lows as US tariffs on China kick in Based on Thursday's official guidance, the yuan is allowed to drop as far as 7.3302. The currency is up 0.3% against the dollar this month and 1.6% firmer this year as broad weakness in the US dollar adds to the strengthening trend. 'Looking beyond near-term tariff headlines, we think the CNY may now be commencing a multi-year strengthening path against the USD,' analysts at Goldman Sachs wrote in a note. Elsewhere, the Hong Kong dollar remained near the weak end of a band around 7.85 to the dollar. The overnight interbank offered rate rebounded to 0.01949% from a record low in the biggest single-day increase since 2023, while interbank rates for one-month and three-month continued to hover near three-year lows. The dollar's six-currency index was stuck near a six-week low, after data showed that the US services sector had contracted for the first time in nearly a year, reigniting concerns about sluggish growth and persistent inflation.

Palm ends lower on weaker rival edible oils, profit booking

JAKARTA: Malaysian palm oil futures extended losses on Thursday, snapping a two-session rally, as investors booked profits and prices of rival edible oils fell. The benchmark palm oil contract for August delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange dropped 44 ringgit, or 1.11%, to 3,904 ringgit ($923.59) a metric ton at the close. 'The palm oil futures were seen trading lower on profit taking, energy prices and weaknesses in related China and US vegetable oil markets,' said Anilkumar Bagani, head of research at Mumbai-based vegetable oil broker Sunvin Group. Dalian's most-active soyoil contract fell 0.18%, while its palm oil contract declined 0.37%. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade were down 0.58%. Palm oil tracks price movements of rival edible oils, as it competes for a share of the global vegetable oils market. Oil prices steadied on Thursday after falling more than 1% the previous day because of a build in US gasoline and diesel inventories and cuts to Saudi Arabia's July prices for Asia. Weaker crude oil futures make palm a less attractive option for biodiesel feedstock. Malaysia's palm oil inventories are projected to climb for a third consecutive month in May, driven by a modest recovery in production despite robust export demand, a Reuters survey showed on Wednesday. Palm oil rebounds on anticipation of strong demand India's palm oil imports in May surged to a six-month high, as lower inventories and the tropical oil's discount to rival soyoil and sunflower oils prompted refiners to increase purchases. Independent inspection company AmSpec Agri Malaysia said exports of Malaysian palm oil products for May rose 13.2%, while cargo surveyor Intertek Testing Services saw a 17.9% jump.

Pakistan's lithium battery imports soar, projected to hit 8.75 GWh by 2030: report

Driven by high electricity costs and falling solar prices, the imports of battery storage systems (BESS) have accelerated at breakneck speeds in Pakistan and are projected to rise to 8.75 gigawatt-hours (GWh) by 2030, according to US-based Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA). 'Pakistan imported an estimated 1.25 GWh of lithium-ion battery packs in 2024 and another 400 megawatt-hours (MWh) in the first two months of 2025, a trend that is likely to continue,' IEEFA stated in its latest report titled 'Battery storage and the future of Pakistan's electricity grid'. This could increase to 8.75 GWh, or 26% of the projected peak demand in 2030, 'if business as usual persists,' it said. 'Such a shift could lead to stranded peak generation assets and higher financial losses for the grid,' IEFFA warned. The report found Pakistan's growing adoption of battery storage is supported by lithium-ion battery imports from China. China exports more solar panels to Pakistan than to many G20 nations in 5 years: report 'While solar PV module prices in Pakistan have consistently declined, emulating improving economics in China, the same is not true for BESS because of high taxes and customs duties. The average price of lithium-ion battery packs in Pakistan ranges between $230/kWh and $360/kWh.' However, despite high taxes, solar-battery combinations seem attractive for consumers, with installations continuously increasing, IEEFA said. 'Solar with BESS has a payback period of 3-5 years in Pakistan's residential sector despite a 48% cost increase from surcharges and duties on lithium-ion batteries. The payback period ranges between 4-6 years for the commercial and industrial sectors, depending on battery size or usage requirements,' it found. The report noted that Pakistan's high penetration of rooftop solar generation can provide a strong foundation for large-scale battery storage adoption in a distributed manner. 'If sustained through further fiscal support and regulatory incentives, this could mean minimal investment requirements for new generation assets for the government at a central level,' it added From crisis to clean energy: Pakistan emerges as top solar market in 2024 However, a lack of grid modernisation and strong regulatory support remain key barriers that should be addressed to ensure an efficient energy transition in Pakistan, the report noted. 'Unmanaged BESS growth could destabilise Pakistan's national grid by reducing demand and raising capacity payments. 'Timely investments in grid modernisation, smart metering, and regulatory updates can enable decentralised solar plus BESS configurations, avoiding expensive generation expansion and supporting strategic power planning.'
