Like most parents, I'm exhausted from juggling the needs of my family and work in the 21st century. But after the kids fall asleep, I've been escaping to southern India in the early 20th century. It's warm there, I'm surrounded by water and the air smells like jasmine.
I've been pulling this off with Abraham Verghese's gorgeous book 'The Covenant of Water.' It's been just the opportunity to relax that I've badly needed.
During a particularly rough spell in which my kids and I were constantly ill this winter, I read Glynnis MacNicol's 'I'm Mostly Here to Enjoy Myself: One Woman's Pursuit of Pleasure in Paris' and vicariously traipsed through Paris as a single person.
So-called bibliotherapy can be a powerful wellness practice, according to Emely Rumble, a Springfield, Massachusetts-based licensed clinical social worker who has been prescribing it to her clients for 15 years.
For most of us, 'there's not really too many opportunities to slow down and turn inward,' said Rumble, who teaches a course on bibliotherapy at Queens College in New York City. She is also author of 'Bibliotherapy in the Bronx,' a book to be published in April.
Reading offers a break from work and caring for other people, she said, and it can also be a way to gain personal insights.
What stories teach us about ourselves
Books often have powerful effects on people, making readers cry or causing them to get angry. 'If an emotion comes up for you while you're reading, there's some information there for you,' Rumble said. If readers stop and think about what's making them have the reactions they're experiencing, they can gain valuable knowledge about themselves.
Similarly, she said, if readers find themselves connecting emotionally with certain characters, they should consider what's making them attach to those individuals.
Rumble recommended readers keep journals on hand to write down what they learn about themselves.
Reading about and reflecting on a topic also can provide an opportunity to see things from other people's points of view and even to reconsider your beliefs, Rumble said.
'We can realize that, OK, maybe I am thinking about something in black-and-white terms. Or maybe I am catastrophizing a little bit too much,' she said. 'Sometimes we read something (to help) reframe our perspective.'
Rumble said stories also remind readers that they're not the only ones who are suffering.
'We're all impacted by the same societal ills, maybe on different levels, in different ways,' she said. This realization can help people feel less alone.
Knowing who you are as a reader is important, whether you're a fan of historical fiction, science fiction, biographies, romance, young adult fiction or something else. Your local librarian or a site like Goodreads can help.
The device for reading is your choice. Some people like audio books, while others read hard copies or use e-readers. What matters is that it's enjoyable for the person.
Reading with a professional
While some people like me find reading to be a way to relax and gain insights on our own, Rumble said therapists also prescribe books to their patients as a form of learning and healing. 'Traditional talk therapy, having a therapist ask you very personal questions or details about traumatic experiences, can feel really harrowing,' she said.
'When you're looking at it through the lens of a fictional character,' she said, 'it becomes a lot easier to talk about some of those painful memories or to consider different experiences that you've had.'
Don't set book goals
Despite the benefits of books, people have been reading less. The average American read 12.6 books during the previous year — the lowest number since 1990 — according to a 2022 Gallup survey. As a college professor, I find that, overall, my students read less now than they did when I started teaching a decade ago.
But Rumble advised that it's best not to set goals for how many books you'll get through in a week or a year.
Once we start focusing on how much we're reading, 'we take the joy away from the benefits of slowing down,' she said.
Rumble recently spent two months reading Imani Perry's book 'Black in Blues: How a Color Tells the Story of My People.' As she read along, she listened to blues music and checked out other books that Perry referenced.
'I feel like that's when reading gets really enjoyable because you're really engaging, not just with the text, but you're having fun with what the author is trying to impart to you as a reader,' she said.
When I want to escape to Italy, I love soaking in Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan novels and Jo Piazza's 'The Sicilian Inheritance.' Reading Donna Tartt's 'The Goldfinch' recently reminded me of the power of art and prompted me to take my young daughters to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where they were mesmerized by artifacts from ancient Egypt.
Reading can be a powerful way of escaping, relaxing and realizing truths about ourselves and the world. That's why I'm heading back to India tonight.

Bangladesh opens trial of deposed ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — A special tribunal set up to try Bangladesh's ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina began proceedings Sunday by accepting the charges against humanity filed against her in connection with a mass uprising in which hundreds of students were killed last year. Accepting the charges, the Dhaka-based International Crimes Tribunal directed investigators to produce Hasina, a former home minister and a former police chief before the court on June 16. Hasina has been in exile in India since Aug. 5, 2023, while former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan is missing and possibly also was in India. Former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun has been arrested. Bangladesh sent a formal request to India to extradite Hasina in December. State-run Bangladesh Television broadcast the court proceedings live. In an investigation report submitted on May 12, the tribunal's investigators brought five allegations of crimes against humanity against Hasina and two others during the mass uprising in July-August last year. According to the charges, Hasina was directly responsible for ordering all state forces, her Awami League party and its associates to carry out actions that led to mass killings, injuries, targeted violence against women and children, the incineration of bodies, and denial of medical treatment to the wounded. Three days after Hasina's ouster, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus took over as the nation's interim leader. In February, the U.N. human rights office estimated that up to 1,400 people may have been killed in Bangladesh over three weeks in the crackdown on the student-led protests against Hasina, who ruled the country for 15 years.

Traveling or flying with a pet? Here's what you need to know before you go
We Americans love our pets — so much so that in 2024, we spent $150.6 billion on them. About half of us have a dog, and more than a third have a cat. I've had a dog most of my life, but I never considered traveling with one until early 2024 when my husband, Otis, asked whether I wanted to spend the summer in Massachusetts. That was a no-brainer. 'Absolutely!' I replied. I wanted to see where he had spent his summers growing up, meet his best friend, eat 'lobstah' and check New England off my bucket list. Then, reality struck. What would we do with Josie? Would you like Josie?' I'd been dogless for six years, so that, too, was a no-brainer. When I drove to Naples to meet Josie, she (Josie, not Hillary) wouldn't stop barking and leaping from one piece of furniture to another. I'm pretty tranquil, so her crazy energy concerned me. Thankfully, I brought her home anyway. After figuring out my doggie door, she burst through it like a bat out of hell to run laps around my fenced-in backyard. She only stopped long enough to dart into my house for water. Then, she bolted out to continue chasing an imaginary mechanical rabbit around what she was claiming to be her personal racetrack. Seven years later, Josie still has that crazy puppy energy, but when she wears herself out, she squeezes between me and the armrest of my couch. When I recline, she sprawls out on top of me and rests her head on my chest while gazing up at me with big, brown eyes that exude love and devotion. If I dare take a break from patting her head or rubbing her tummy, she squirms and whimpers. How could I leave her for two months? Short answer: I couldn't. But, wouldn't traveling with her be complicated? Yes! Yet, after doing so last summer, I can tell you it is so worth it — as long as you're sedated. Here are five lessons I learned: Since Josie would have been stressed without me for the two months we'd be gone, boarding wasn't really an option. Still, I researched it. In Palm Beach County, prices range from $44 to $66 per day, with additional fees for bedtime biscuits, story time, and personal playtime. We would have spent at least $3,000 for Josie's stay! Driving would have been the least expensive way to travel, but a 3,000-mile, 44-hour round trip was out of the question. A previous near head-on collision had given me PTSD. Since driving wasn't an option, we looked into flying. Delta — which charges $95 per pet per flight — was our best choice. But flying with a pet also meant more expenses: a vet fee (for a health certificate and sedatives) and an airline-approved pet carrier (soft-sided, ventilated, leak-proof, and 18 by 11 by 11 inches) — which I purchased from Amazon for $46. I also had to buy a dog bed in Massachusetts. Josie stayed for free at the house we rented, but we took several short trips. One hotel didn't charge for her, one charged $100, and another $125. The hotels had a weight limit (for Josie, not us), barking restrictions (again, for Josie), and legal paperwork with too much small print to read — placing the financial burden on us should one of us leave fleas behind or destroy property. And if anyone complained about barking, we could be asked to leave and would not receive a refund. As we signed on the dotted lines, we begged Josie not to make us regret bringing her. Once we decided on flying, the real fun began. Delta allows 20-pound-or-under pets to fly under the seat in front of their person. Fortunately, Josie had been dieting for a year and weighed 18 pounds. Before purchasing airline tickets, I called Delta to reserve a spot for Josie, as they limit the number of dogs per flight. My greatest fear was that Josie wouldn't let us stuff her into her carrier. So, Otis began Operation-Acclimate-Josie-to-Her-Kennel-by-Putting-Her-Favorite-Treat (Popcorn)-In-It on a daily basis. My second greatest fear was that she wasn't — as stipulated — 'small enough to fit comfortably' in her carrier and didn't have 'the ability to move around without touching or sticking out from the sides.' I wondered whether they cared that at 6-foot-2, I don't fit comfortably in my seat, can't move around, and stick my legs out when I can. In case Josie didn't cooperate, or Delta said she was too smooshed and wouldn't let her fly, we came up with Plan B. After dropping us off at the airport, my stepson would circle around waiting for a thumbs-up text. If need be, he'd take custody of Josie until he could hand her off to my daughter, who — with a baby and two dogs of her own — would be less than thrilled. At the airport, we took Josie to the Special Service Counter, where an agent made sure she and her kennel met Delta's requirements, and I paid the fee. This was also where Josie demonstrated her best problem-solving skills by nudging the zipper open in a thankfully-thwarted attempted escape. With Zipper Security in place, we passed inspection. We were so thrilled and relieved that we forgot to send a thumbs-up text. My stepson is still circling the airport. At home, I walk Josie a few times a week for exercise, but she mostly takes care of her business in my backyard. With no doggie door and fenced-in yard at our place in Massachusetts, I was in charge of her potty breaks. I made a shocking discovery. Josie goes. A lot. Translation: I needed a lot more poop bags than I packed. For future trips with Josie, before booking a hotel, I'll check out its surrounding area. When we stayed in Boston for a few days, we had to walk three blocks to get to a grassy area. Three blocks probably seemed like 3 miles to poor Josie, who'd been holding it for hours in our hotel room. Something else we didn't anticipate? Finding ticks on all three of us after a hike. We responded the only way we could. We researched Lyme disease, freaked out, and bought tick spray. Oh, and removed the ticks. On the first leg of our journey, Otis carried Josie in her carrier. But, for our return flight, Josie and I were on our own. I soon learned that carrying 18 pounds of a squirming fur baby while pulling a suitcase isn't easy, so I now have wheels for her carrier for future trips. At security, I felt like a single mom with a squirming infant — except my 'baby' had four legs and a tail, and the rules seemed to change every five minutes. 'Take her out of the kennel. Don't take her out. Put her on a leash but hold her. Put her down. Don't take her through the scanner with you.' Oy vey. Josie may be a Florida girl, but I'd never taken her to the beach. Her reaction to her first ocean encounter in Brant Rock was priceless: Barked at the waves. Sampled the salt water. Swore off salt water. For life. We often went on long walks along the ocean, and others almost always stopped to talk to us because of Josie. She also befriended our next door neighbors' dog Bentley, even though he was four times her size. Josie never had any idea where we were going in our rental car, but she always wanted to go. If begging didn't work, she tried reverse psychology. To try to trick us into taking her, she'd lie in bed and pretend she didn't care if we left without her. But, when we tried double reverse psychology and feigned that we didn't care that she didn't care, she let us know there would be consequences to pay if we left her behind. This was her vacation, too, darn it! In the evenings, most of our neighbors sat in rockers on their front porch. We were happy to adopt this lifestyle and enjoyed watching Josie go nuts because we wouldn't let her out of our screened-in porch to chase the bunnies hopping around our front yard. My husband's BFF offered to keep Josie when we went on overnighters, but the truth is we would've missed her. We'd learned that we enjoyed traveling with her. Because our kids were grown when Otis and I married in 2020, his kids don't think of me as their stepmom, and mine don't think of him as their stepdad. This trip was the first time he and I felt as if we were co-parents. At the end of our trip, my husband — who had only owned big dogs — said, 'For a small dog, Josie's not bad. She's not yappy, and when I talk to her, she looks me in the eye.' In March, he stayed with her for a week while I visited my son in Georgia. When I returned, Josie made sure I noticed that she was snuggling next to him, not me. A couple of days later, Traitor Josie — as I started calling her — must have forgiven me because, once again, she's a mama's girl. Despite the challenges, traveling with Josie made our trip unforgettable. And she was so good that on both flights, the person whose seat she was under didn't even know she was there. You And Your Siblings Might've Had Very Different Childhoods Despite Growing Up Together — Here's Why
Hearing your siblings describe their childhood can sometimes be a little jarring. You may even get the sense that you didn't grow up on the same planet, much less in the same house. 'Despite having shared early experiences, it's not uncommon for siblings to have experienced their childhood in a very different way,' said Genevieve von Lob, a clinical psychologist and author of 'Happy Parent, Happy Child.' It turns out this is normal ― and for a good reason. Below, experts break down this phenomenon. The family circumstances a child is born into often differ from when their younger sibling arrives. For example, economic changes may make siblings feel like their childhoods weren't the same. 'Significant changes in family financial status can impact differences in extracurricular activities, schooling, vacations, and other material aspects of childhood between siblings,' said Keneisha Sinclair-McBride, a clinical psychologist at Boston Children's Hospital in Massachusetts. 'These things are very tangible and can feel 'unfair,' even though they are often just a product of changes in circumstances.' Emotional shifts in parents can play a significant role as well. For example, siblings are often born at different phases in their parents' lives, so they might be treated differently. 'Parents may show up very differently for each of their children depending on where they are in their own lives, including their own mental health and stress levels, their significant partnership, support network, work and financial commitments, and whether they have more than one child,' von Lob said. She noted that parenting might feel overwhelming to someone highly sensitive, as their nervous systems become overstimulated more quickly. 'If they have more than one child, other stressors in their lives, or if they haven't had enough sleep and time alone to recharge their batteries, then they can become more drained, anxious, irritated and frazzled,' von Lob said. 'So differences in the way a child is parented can also be influenced by the temperament of the parent and where the parent is emotionally in their lives.' 'Siblings born years apart are quite literally born from parents who themselves are years apart from who they were during the earlier or later pregnancy,' noted Dr. Kevin Simon, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Boston Children's Hospital and chief behavioral health officer for the city of Boston. As parents get more experience raising children, they inevitably evolve in their caregiving style. 'Some parents are more unsure and cautious with their first child and more sure of themselves with subsequent siblings,' Sinclair-McBride said. 'This can make older and younger siblings' experiences different.' Parents may recognize that certain approaches they took with their first child weren't ideal and adjust accordingly. 'Maybe the older sibling was treated more harshly, but the parents readjusted their parenting style and were more compassionate with their parenting moving forward with a younger sibling,' said parenting educator Laura Linn Knight. 'An older sibling also may have experienced or witnessed more than the younger sibling, such as a divorce, so this can affect the way they see themselves in the family dynamic.' Birth order can also shape the way a child perceives and interacts with their parents. 'For example, the oldest child is often expected to take on more responsibilities and look after younger siblings, so may have different expectations placed on them,' von Lob said. 'In this way, they may have a very different experience of their childhood. Younger siblings may have a parent who feels more experienced and therefore may be more relaxed but may have less time to give that child than the firstborn.' 'All siblings are unique individuals ― including twins,' Sinclair-McBride said. 'Having their own personality styles, traits, and characteristics may cause siblings to interpret or experience the same situations or parenting differently. In turn, these differences may impact the way they are parented, connect to their parents and experience their family.' One child may share certain interests and personality traits with one or both parents, while another sibling has more of their own distinct personality and interests. So if one kid is passionate about that same sport or team their parent loves, they may forge a specific bond around that activity. 'Sometimes, a child's personality traits can bring out different sides of their parents, and parents may relate to a child's personality more than another child, which can be seen as favoritism,' Knight said. 'Because of personality traits of the child and parent, you find that parents respond differently to each child or enjoy spending more time with a child that is easier for them to communicate with and enjoy the company of. When we look at differences in personality, temperament, needs and interests of parents and children, it is easy to see that siblings will have their own unique experience.' Even parents with the best intentions don't respond to each child similarly. Factors like personality, past experiences and even societal expectations around gender roles can color each interaction. While some kids are more extroverted and crave attention, others can be more reserved and less open about what they want. 'The gender, personality, needs, mannerisms and behavior of each particular child can trigger parents in different ways, which can result in a sibling who is treated very differently to the other children,' von Lob said. She noted that a parent may find their strong-willed, highly sensitive child more demanding and difficult to manage than their laidback, easy-tempered child ― which can lead to very different interactions over those childhood years. 'Depending on the personality, temperament, and characteristics we're born with, our parents will respond to those differences,' said clinical psychologist and author Jenny Yip. 'Siblings are different individuals who will also respond to their parents differently.' She noted that no two individuals think the same way about a situation. Thus, siblings can have different emotional responses to similar experiences. This is true for how they feel during childhood and as adults looking back. 'It's just like eyewitness accounts,' Yip said. 'You have 10 people who all saw the same thing, but depending on belief system, attitude, and values, they're going to interpret the same incident differently. Another example is like watching a movie. Everyone in the room watches the same movie, but what each person takes from it and relates to it is going to be different depending on your values, attitudes, and belief system. It's the same with siblings who share the same parents.' Siblings can disagree about shared experiences. For example, one may have been more affected by a particularly positive or traumatic event that they both lived through. Or they may simply have a different impression of whether something was positive or negative at all. 'One sibling may have loved the village they grew up in, but the other sibling found it stifling,' von Lob said. 'One sibling may have loved the camping holidays in the countryside, but the other sibling found it boring and remembers wanting to go abroad.' 'It is normal and expected for siblings to have different experiences with their parents,' Simon said. 'This is neither good nor bad in and of itself. It is a natural result of each sibling's unique personality, experiences, and perspective.' Indeed, the fact that you and your siblings grew up in the same home but had very different perceptions of your childhoods does not necessarily indicate a problem. 'Children do not have to be treated exactly the same at all times to be treated equitably,' Sinclair-McBride said. 'Because each individual is unique, they have unique needs and experiences. If those needs were met with love and support, slight differences in treatment do not have to be a cause for alarm for parents or siblings.' Still, the reality is that you and your siblings have different impressions of your childhood, and your parents may feel uncomfortable. That's where talking about it can help. 'Siblings need to recognize and respect each other's differences in how they perceive and relate to their parents,' Simon said. 'Siblings can learn to appreciate and value each other's perspectives, even if they disagree.' Although these differences are natural and understandable, processing them is still helpful. In addition, there might be some negative feelings that warrant addressing. 'If one or more siblings feel that there was unfair and unequal treatment in their childhoods, working through this together can be very beneficial to their relationships,' Sinclair-McBride said. 'Giving one's siblings grace to explain their experiences without judgment and defensiveness can help with perspective-taking and compassion. Trying to change other people's perceptions of their experiences is a futile exercise.
