Scott Arfield has Falkirk contract extension on the table as chief admits 'we'd be crazy not to keep him'
Jamie Swinney has made it clear he wants to keep Arfield around for the Premiership
Scott Arfield will get a crack at the Premiership with Falkirk if he wants to, with CEO Jamie Swinney admitting the club would be crazy not to keep him.
It was one of the stories of the Scottish football season when Arfield returned to the club where he launched his career and helped guide them back to the top flight after a 15-year absence.
He was part of the team that took them down in 2009 and left to embark on a storied career that saw him make headlines in the English Premier League and play in a European final with Rangers.
When top scorer Callumn Morrison was sold in January, John McGlynn teased that he could do something 'interesting.' And there was a social media eruption when it emerged that Arfield was coming back from Bolton Wanderers on an initial six-month deal.
It helped galvanise their promotion charge right from the off. Arfield scored nine goals in 13 appearances on their way to sealing the title, including a hattrick against Partick Thistle on his debut – one with his very first touch of the ball.
The club hold the option to extend his contract for next season and Swinney admits they won't be waiting about to make it happen.
Reflecting on the deadline day turning point, Swinney told The Herald: 'The top goalscorer wanted to leave, we were out the cup and our recent league results had been a little bit uninspiring.
'Fast forward a week, Scott Arfield is in the door and brings a wave of euphoria.
'He was 38 seconds into his second debut and he hadn't touched the ball and when the ball rolls to him in the 18-yard box he did what he has done his whole career.
'Composure, quality and his first goal before he goes on to score a hat-trick. It was Roy of the Rovers stuff.
'He is a hero to fans, what he has brought in terms of goals speaks for itself.
'And what he added off the park is probably more valuable still.
'We have an option on Scott and I think we would be absolutely crazy to not do everything we can to keep him here next season.
'We have a ton of work to do for the Premiership. We have just spent five years in League One and our infrastructure is closer to League One than it is to the Premiership.
'There is so much that needs done. But, listen, it's a brilliant problem to have.'
The Bairns also have no plans to part company with John McGlynn – even if Hearts come calling for his signature.
Hearts can expect the phone to ring out if they go to Falkirk to enquire about John McGlynn.
McGlynn was named manager of the year in Scotland for the second season running after leading the Bairns back to the Premiership in a thrilling final day.
The 63-year-old is back in the big time for the first time since he last managed Hearts in 2013.
But Swinney told The Herald he's not even ready to consider a future without him. "If they pick up the phone, I just won't answer," he joked. "Listen, I would be very surprised if people didn't speculate over the future of John.
"If anybody gets an opportunity to go to a considerably bigger club on a lot more money in football, then I think the vast majority of people can understand it. But I hope it doesn't happen. And I am hopeful now we are in the Premiership.
"In the Premiership, we hope John can achieve his ambitions with us and we can hopefully do what we wanted to do for a long time by being competitive in the top flight.
"We extended John and his assistant Paul Smith by another three years, so they got four seasons at the club and that was way before we had confirmed the league. So we have already rewarded the management team with a longer-term contract and they love it here.
"The squad love John, the fans love him. While he has had bits of success in his career what he has."

'I would love that' - Liverpool urged to hijack £60m Manchester United transfer
Emile Heskey wants Liverpool to hijack a Manchester United transfer deal as the Reds look to bolster Arne Slot's squad this summer. Liverpool have already signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and are closing in on a huge deal for his former teammate Florian Wirtz. The Anfield club are also pushing to sign Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth and want to sign another attacker to strengthen Slot's attacking firepower. Liverpool won the Premier League by ten points last season but know reinforcements are needed ahead of their title defence with Manchester City expected to come back stronger and Arsenal well-placed for another title tilt. At the other end of the table, Manchester United made Matheus Cunha their first summer signing and are now working on a deal for Bryan Mbeumo. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Mbeumo has verbally agreed a move to Old Trafford but United are yet to meet Brentford's £60m valuation for a player who scored 20 Premier League goals last season. The Cameroon international was linked with Tottenham and Newcastle United before Manchester United emerged as the frontrunners to secure his signature. But Heskey wishes Mbeumo was heading for his former club Liverpool, insisting he would have been a perfect addition to Slot's squad. 'It's hard to ever say Liverpool make mistakes in the market, because their strategy is usually just so solid,' the former England striker told Prime Casino. 'I would have loved to have seen Bryan Mbeumo at Anfield with Liverpool though. He's got loads going for him. Manchester United In: Matheus Cunha Out: Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof Liverpool In: Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi Out: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher 'He was someone that is tried and tested in the Premier League for a few years as well. His work rate's astounding. He knows where the goal is. He's very, very technical and understands the way that Liverpool would want to play. 'So it was interesting to see that they never really went in for him.' Mbeumo looks set to join a Manchester United team that finished just 15th in the Premier League last season and will not be involved in any European competition next year. Asked how United were able to attract Mbeumo and Cunha despite their dismal 2024-25 campaign, Heskey added: 'The thing is with United is that they still have the pull to attract players. 'Normally, Mbeumo would be wanting Champions League football, knowing what the club are going to do. 'Even now, without Europe, in a transitional phase, United can still get hold of players like him and Matheus Cunha. More Trending 'It's a bit like when I chose Liverpool, who weren't yet at their best. I always supported Liverpool, but I always wanted to be in on the ground floor on their comeback. 'I understood the assignment, and I saw where things were going if they went well. 'Mbeumo probably feels the same. He can be part of something that can be great again. 'Let's be honest, it's Liverpool and Manchester United when you're abroad. They're the only two clubs who matter to the rest of the world.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Former Hearts player seals summer transfer as ex Jambos stars signs him up

Ross County have been relegated to the Championship after a play off final defeat to Livingston last month and are rebuilding for life back in the second tier. They don't appear keen to dwell in that realm for too long though with a move for ex Scotland centre back Declan Gallagher, who was a regular for Dundee United in the Premiership last term. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad They have now moved to sign ex Hearts star Gary Mackay Steven on a one year deal. The attacker known for his skilful style of play returns to the club he featured for at academy level before heading south with Liverpool, having been with Kilmarnock in the 24/25 campaign. Former Hearts star signed by ex Jambo After time in Merseyside and briefly with Fulham in his youth, he returned to Scotland with Airdrie before making his name at Dundee United over a four year stretch. That earned a move to Celtic where he spent a couple of years before moving on to Aberdeen then New York City FC in the MLS. His spell at Hearts followed that, where he helped the club out of the Championship and made 64 appearances overall with eight goals and the same number of assists. Mackay-Steven has been signed by another former Hearts man in Don Cowie, remaining as County's boss after relegation, who said: 'Gary is another great addition to the group as he makes his return to the club. He offers us good experience in the wide area of the pitch and we are delighted he has chosen to head back up North for the next chapter of his career.' Cost of Premiership relegation Chief executive Steven Ferguson detailed to BBC Scotland how difficult relegation would be for Ross County. He said: "There's no excuses from anybody at Ross County – we fell short. But it's a collective we. It doesn't just fall on the manager, it doesn't just fall on the players, we need to look at the whole club and everybody that's involved and we need to take responsibility for it and we will do that. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad "First and foremost we'll need to look at the playing squad and guys that are out of contract will need to be spoken to so they know exactly where they stand. We have underachieved this season and that's not something that happens too often. In my time at Ross County we've always managed to get to where we want to be. We'll look at it, honestly appraise it, see how we can pick the bones out of it and move forward. 'We aren't a big staff up here. Everybody feels it and it has a ripple effect. What we need to realise as well is that it's not just on the pitch. To not have any representation for this area has a real knock-on effect for everybody, not just the supporters, but the local business and the revenue that comes into the Highlands because of Premiership football."

Benjamin Sesko's manager tells him to reject one club after Arsenal and Man Utd
Arsenal are battling it out with A-Hilal to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko (Picture: Getty) Slovenia head coach Matjaz Kek has advised Benjamin Sesko to ignore interest from the Saudi Pro League and make a 'smart' decision over his future this summer. Arsenal are on the hunt for a high-class centre-forward and have identified RB Leipzig attacker Sesko as a possible solution up front on the back of another trophyless season, along with Sporting's Viktor Gyokeres. RB Leipzig are open to offers for their star striker as they look to make up for the financial loss of missing out on Champions League qualification and the Bundesliga club have been in talks with the Gunners since last month. It's understood Manchester United have also held discussions over a move for Sesko following a disappointing campaign for both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee. Reports on Monday claimed Arsenal and RB Leipzig had hit a roadblock in their transfer negotiations, with the north Londoners told to cough up £70million or walk away from a deal for the 22-year-old Slovenia international. The news that Saudi outfit A-Hilal have joined the race for Sesko's signature has only complicated matters for Arsenal, even though the playerhimself would ideally prefer to remain in European football. A-Hilal are intent on making a marquee signing having appointed Simone Inzaghi their new manager last week – and have also explored bids for Victor Osimhen and Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes this summer. Kek (middle) hopes Sesko stays in European football (Picture: Getty) Sesko missed Slovenia's victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina (Picture: Getty) Facing the media after Slovenia's 2-1 defeat of Bosnia and Herzegovina,Kek did his best to warn Sesko over a proposed move to Saudi Arabia at this stage of his career. 'Benjamin Sesko and Saudi Arabia? I would advise him to never go there, at least not at his age,' the Slovenia boss told reporters. While Kek enjoyed his brief spell managing Al-Ittihad, he is convinced Sesko should only have eyes for Europe's top clubs. On the interest Sesko has attracted from the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, AC Milan and Juventus, Kek said: 'This is a great recognition, these are clubs that mean a lot. RB Leipzig are holding out for a fee of £70m for the Slovenian (Picture: Getty) 'It's not that I underestimate the Saudi Pro League. On the contrary, I worked there at Al-Ittihad and the club is still a part of me. 'I also watch the league regularly… but the time will come for Benjamin Sesko for that. 'I am convinced that Benjamin himself and the people who care for him will be smart enough to make the right solution. More Trending 'That means going somewhere where he can play football because that is the only way he can be happy.' Sesko was named in Slovenia's squad for the side's friendly matches against Luxembourg and Bosnia and Herzegovina this month. However, the former Red Bull Salzburg man played no part in either clash to avoid the risk of injury, with transfer talks ongoing behind the scenes. Sesko has scored 39 goals in 87 games for RB Leipzig and is tied into a contract at Red Bull Arena until June 2029.
