KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu government will provide immediate assistance to the families of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students involved in the tragic crash between a bus and a multipurpose vehicle on the East–West Highway near Tasik Banding, Perak, early this morning.
State Education, Higher Education, Science, Technology and Human Capital Development Committee chairman Datuk Satiful Bahri Mamat said the aid would include welfare support, as well as counselling and psychosocial services for the families and friends of the victims.
'I have instructed all relevant departments and agencies to coordinate efforts with the university, hospitals and the Federal government to ensure that all victims and their families receive the necessary support,' he said in a statement today.
Satiful Bahri also extended his condolences on behalf of the state government to the families affected by the tragedy, which has claimed the lives of 15 students, many of them from Terengganu, who were on their way back to campus after the Hari Raya Aidiladha holidays.
'They passed away on a noble journey, returning in pursuit of knowledge with sincere intentions. Their loss is deeply felt by their families, the community and the state.
'We call on the people of Terengganu and Malaysians at large to join us in praying that the souls of those who perished will be showered with mercy and placed among the martyrs and the righteous,' he said.
He also prayed for the swift recovery of the injured and strength for the families affected by the tragedy.
Earlier this morning, the Hulu Perak Civil Defence Force confirmed in a statement that at least 15 people were killed when a bus carrying UPSI students collided with another vehicle on the East–West Highway in Banun, near Tasik Banding, approximately 57 kilometres from Gerik, Perak.
It is understood that the bus was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak.

Gerik Crash: Shattered hope as families receive death certificates

JERTIH: Nearly a year ago, Mohamad Isma Abdul Manaf sent off his eldest daughter, Nur Dalila Farhana, to university with the hope that she would return home with a degree. But fate had other plans. Instead of a degree, today, the 47-year-old father received his daughter's death certificate. Nur Dalila Farhana, 21, was among the 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who perished in the tragic crash along the East-West Highway in Gerik, Perak, on Monday. 'It tore me apart to see my daughter's name on a death certificate. No parent ever wishes to face that, but this is my fate. I have to accept it and stay strong,' he told Bernama after receiving the document from Terengganu National Registration Department (NRD) director Mohamad Nasir Kareem at the family's home in Kampung Bharu Tok Dhor here. Mohamad Isma said that the death certificate in hand would ease matters for him and his wife, Norinda Kasim, 49, in handling other affairs, such as insurance claims and related issues. The crash occurred when the chartered bus, en route from Jertih to UPSI's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, collided with a Perodua Alza multipurpose vehicle before overturning. The accident also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver and his assistant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the Perodua Alza. Meanwhile, Mohamad Nasir said that eight death certificates were handed over to the next of kin at their respective residences today, adding that five others were collected by family members at the NRD counters, whereas two more are still being processed. 'This is an initiative by the NRD to ease the burden on families by handling the death registration process for their children without requiring them to be present at the NRD counters in Besut or Setiu,' he added.

Police open investigation into teacher's offensive post on UPSI crash victims

Slug: izcikgu HL: Police open investigation into teacher's offensive post on UPSI crash victims By Muhammad Zulsyamini Sufian Suri IPOH: Police have opened two investigation papers against a teacher for allegedly posting an offensive message on social media regarding Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who died in a bus crash in Gerik on Monday. Manjung district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Hasbullah Abd Rahman, said the investigations are being conducted under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. He said the investigation was launched following a report lodged at the Manjung district police headquarters at 4.40pm yesterday regarding a Facebook post by an account under the name 'Khalid Yunus'. "The account published an offensive message about the UPSI students involved in the recent road tragedy. "We advise the public not to upload any content that may cause unease or disrupt public order," he said in a statement today. Earlier, it was reported that the Perak State Education Department had directed the district education office to prepare a full report on the teacher's social media post. Perak state executive councillor for education, higher learning, youth and sports Khairudin Abu Hanipah was quoted as saying that investigations found the Facebook account to belong to a teacher serving at a secondary school in the state. The teacher sparked controversy after posting an offensive remark that went viral and caused distress to the victims' families. On Monday, a bus carrying 42 UPSI students was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus when it collided with a Perodua Alza at KM53 of the East-West Highway in Gerik. Thirteen died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries in hospital. The driver, his attendant, the other UPSI students, and a family of four travelling in the Alza sustained various injuries. ends
