E2E Female 100: It's time to lead by example

Independent14-05-2025

I am absolutely delighted to help to shine a light on these exceptional female founders and leaders. After all, to create, grow and maintain a successful business in the current climate, with continually escalating costs to do business and little in way of support or incentive, takes grit, determination and strength, all qualities which must be celebrated.
At the heart of every strong, dynamic business lies a core of pure fire. A heady mix of entrepreneurial spirit teamed with a steely resolve and a truck-load of resilience. While some of us may be born with a passion for business and have the privilege and good fortune to be actively encouraged or able to pursue it, it's true to say that this isn't the case for all.
Worryingly, in our industry, food and drink wholesale, a recent report by Food and Drink Wholesale UK (FWD) revealed that the number of female leaders is actually moving backwards. This is despite diversity, equity and inclusion identified as a key priority to drive the sector forward and encourage the next generation of talent to join.
The report, Championing Change, revealed that just 16% of senior-level roles in the wholesale sector are held by women, compared to 48% of senior leadership roles in the UK's top 150 businesses. This is overwhelmingly disappointing to read.
At Lioncroft Wholesale, I work alongside many incredible women whose skills, experience, insight and knowledge is exceptional, including our COO Daali Wouhra, without whom the business would not be the success that it is.
What comes across loud and clear from this powerful FWD report is that a lack of visibility of female leaders is proving to be a major stumbling block for those looking to progress their careers. After all, we often have to see something before we can truly visualise it for ourselves. We need to see those who go before us in order to be inspired to follow their footsteps. With that in mind, in business, I do believe that role models and mentors have never been more important. Countless studies have shown that women with strong mentors are more likely to pursue and achieve leadership roles. Whether a mentor offers career guidance, confidence building or introductions and wider connections, these relationships can prove to be invaluable for those looking to sharpen and develop their skills and identify routes for progression.
And let's be honest, gender diversity in leadership is not only critical when it comes to inspiring others, but also for the overall success of a business. Research continually shows that companies with diverse leaderships teams benefit greatly from the richness of different perspectives, resulting in better, more informed decision making and problem solving. A mix of life experiences, cultures, backgrounds and ages can challenge boundaries and provide invaluable insight.
In fact, research from McKinsey has demonstrated that companies in the top quartile for gender diversity on executive teams were 25% more likely to have above-average profitability*. These different viewpoints, opinions and challenges that drive ideas forward leading to the best results and making companies more robust along the way.
This is why the E2E Female 100 track is so critical. Championing female success in a world that can still feel dominated by men has to be a priority for us all.

Former Arsenal forward jailed in UK on cannabis smuggling charge

LONDON, June 5 (Reuters) - Former Arsenal and Ipswich Town forward Jay Emmanuel-Thomas was on Thursday jailed for four years for orchestrating the smuggling of 60 kg of cannabis into Britain's Stansted Airport. The 34-year-old, who was released by Scottish second division club Greenock Morton after being charged last year, pleaded guilty at Chelmsford Crown Court last month. Britain's National Crime Agency previously said Emmanuel-Thomas had recruited his girlfriend and another woman to travel to Thailand, where Emmanuel-Thomas briefly played in 2019, to collect the cannabis and smuggle it to Britain. The two women were also charged with smuggling cannabis but the prosecution offered no evidence against them and the charges were dropped on Wednesday, the NCA added. Emmanuel-Thomas sat in the dock as Judge Alexander Mills told him: "Your transition from professional footballer to criminal represents a substantial fall from grace, one that effectively ends the only career path that you have ever known." He will serve 40% of that sentence in custody before he is released on licence. Prosecutor David Josse said the 60 kg of cannabis had a street value of approximately 600,000 pounds (roughly $816,000) and a wholesale value of around 250,000 pounds, though Emmanuel-Thomas was paid 5,000 pounds for his involvement. "This was an isolated incident (and) a catastrophic error of judgment," Emmanuel-Thomas' lawyer Alex Rose told the court.

Loose Women CANCELLED as ITV panel bid farewell to viewers ahead of schedule shake-up set to leave fans livid

Friday's instalment of Loose Women has been cancelled in a schedule shake-up. Kaye Adams, 62, revealed the news at the end of Thursday's episode of the ITV show. Loose Women usually airs Monday to Friday from 12:30pm on ITV1. But at 1pm tomorrow (6 June 2025), ITV will air the racing, so viewers will enjoy the first Derby meeting from Epsom. After Kaye's co-stars Frankie Bridge, 36, Nadia Sawalha, 60, and Kelly Brook, 45, showed viewers how they sleep at night, Kaye said: 'Well thank God I'm going! That's it for today and this week sadly. 'We're off tomorrow for the racing. 'We've got a great line-up next week though, including Cheshire housewife Tanya Bardsley, 44, Atomic Kitten's Liz, 44. 'She shares a very personal health story. Plus Si King, 58, and Alison Hammond, 50, are here too. 'We will see you Monday. Have a great weekend!' Loose Women has been hitting headlines recently after it was revealed the chat show, along with Lorraine, has been axed for half the year. ITV announced the big shake up to its daytime schedule amid huge cuts last month. Loose Women will only air for 30 weeks of the year. Plus MailOnline recently revealed that ITV will axe a vital part of the show which viewers love in a desperate bid to save money. The series is scrapping their live studio audience when the programme airs with a reduced schedule of just 30 episodes next year. Bosses have got rid of the studio audience to save costs, with insiders revealing that it's an expensive feature due to being managed by an external company, who also provides security and a warmup person, but for the presenters, it's going to be a 'disaster.' A TV source told MailOnline: 'The panelists are really upset over the decision to axe the live studio audience from the show. 'It's what sets the series apart from the rest of ITV daytime and now there are massive fears that viewers will switch off completely. 'The only concern now is to cut costs and having a live studio audience can be expensive, with the added need for security and a warmup artist. 'Presenters already know how it feels to broadcast the show without an audience because that's what happened during the pandemic, and they all know it creates low mood and lack of atmosphere.' Meanwhile Kaye Adams has broken her silence on the brutal ITV cuts. She admitted that she's suffered 'sleepless nights' after her 'life imploded' and 'has no idea what's going to happen.' She told her How To Be 60 podcast co-host Karen MacKenzie: 'To be perfectly honest, we have no idea at this point, what's going to happen. 'I didn't anticipate it, which is probably stupid in retrospect. You get into a sort of rhythm of life. 'I had a couple of sleepless nights I have to say, because it's just like the rug's been pulled from under your feet – what has been familiar.' She continued: 'It's going to have an impact. Lots of people will lose their jobs completely which is terrible. It's a huge change.' Loose Women airs weekdays on ITV1 from 12:30pm and is available to stream on ITVX.

'We need a striker' - your transfer window priorities

We asked for your thoughts on what Aberdeen need to do in the transfer what some of you said:Russell: We need an out-and-out number nine. Someone around the age of 23 making a name for themselves. Would also like to see a young, combative central midfielder. [Dunfermline's] Ewan Otoo looked good against us in the cup Another good goalkeeper to add competition. Tall targetman, Sam Dalby is available and a couple of physical midfielders who can go box-to-box. Also a natural left-back who can drive forward out of With the news that Bojan Miovski is to become available, would it not be far fetched to think we could either offer a loan or even sign him, albeit on reduced terms? The club has some money to spend and it would give a clear indication of what they want next Need a left-back, two midfielders and two strikers as a priority. I feel there needs to be a pathway for some of the youngsters to get some game time. Alfie Stewart, Findlay Marshall, Fletcher Boyd, Adam Emslie and Alfie Bavidge and obviously Jack Milne after his outstanding performance in the cup Some players do still need to depart. We don't really want any of the loan players back, and could do with moving Peter Ambrose on. Need a couple of strikers, a centre-back, left-back, a couple more midfielders and a good number Squad needs trimmed. A couple of full-backs and some midfield legs required. This season has to see some of the sterling talent in the youth ranks getting more We need a striker and a left-back as a priority. Kevin Nisbet is too expensive and not really worth the wages so we need to be scouring Europe or further afield. The media will naturally link us with guys like Ronan Hale out of sheer laziness.
