Scientists Crushed Rocks in Iceland—and May Have Solved the Fall of the Roman Empire

A research team studied unusual rocks in Iceland to better understand the Late Antique Little Ice Age.
The team believes that rapid climate cooling contributed to a mass migration of people within Europe.

A team of researchers from three different continents studied local cobbles—round stones about the size of a human fist—and the mineral clues embedded within them to better understand a dramatic climate event from the sixth century A.D. that coincided with the undoing of one of the world's greatest dynasties.
'When it comes to the fall of the Roman Empire, this climate shift may have been the straw that broke the camel's back,' Tom Gernon, professor of Earth science at the University of Southampton, said in a statement.
Historians have long debated the role of rapid cooling as part of the fall of the Roman Empire, but the new rock-based research strengthens the case that a brief (but intense) period of cooling may have hampered an already declining empire and incited a mass population migration that reshaped Europe. The team behind this research published a study describing their findings in the journal Geology.
The timing of what is known as the Late Antique Little Ice Age has always intrigued historians studying the ties between the climate and European history. Three massive volcanic eruptions around 540 A.D. likely triggered the brief but impactful climate shift, as volcanic ash blocked sunlight and lowered global temperature for around 200 to 300 years.
So, where do these rocks come in? Well, the scientists believe the rocks were carried to Iceland via icebergs formed during the glaciation event, and can now help show the chaotic nature of the climate during that period of history.
'We knew these rocks seemed somewhat out of place because the rock types are unlike anything found in Iceland today,' Christopher Spencer, lead author of the research, said in a statement.
The team crushed the rocks in question to analyze the age and composition of zircon crystals locked inside, which helped pinpoint their source.
'Zircons are essentially time capsules that preserve vital information including when they crystalized as well as their compositional characteristics,' Spencer said. 'The combination of age and chemical composition allows us to fingerprint currently exposed regions of the Earth's surface, much like is done in forensics.'
The team linked the debris to specific regions in Greenland. 'This is the first direct evidence of icebergs carrying large Greenlandic cobbles to Iceland,' Spencer said.
'On one hand, you're surprised to see anything but basalt in Iceland, but having seem them for the first time, you instantly suspect they arrived by iceberg from Greenland,' Ross Mitchell, a co-author of the study, said in a statement.
'The fact that the rocks come from nearly all geological regions of Greenland provides evidence of their glacial origins,' Gernon said. 'As glaciers move, they erode the landscape, breaking up rocks from different areas and carrying them along, creating a chaotic and diverse mixture—some of which ends up stuck inside the ice.'
The team determined the ice-rafted rocks were likely dropped in Iceland in the seventh century, coinciding with a major climate shift known as the Bond 1 event. 'This timing coincides with a known major episode of ice-rafting, where vast chunks of ice break away from glaciers, drift across the ocean, and eventually melt, scattering debris along distant shore,' Gernon said.
The 'climate-driven iceberg activity may have been one of the many cascading effects of rapid cooling,' Spencer said, alongside the mass human migrations that spread the population of Europe across the continent, helping to weaken—and eventually extinguish—the Roman Empire.

Dementia Risk Declining With Each Generation, Says Promising New Study

Dementia cases are on the rise around the world. In 2021, 57 million people were living with one of the neurodegenerative diseases under the dementia umbrella, and by 2050, that number is expected to reach 153 million. But a new study suggests the tides may be turning, with younger generations facing lower risks for the disease as they age. The research team, led by economist Xiaoxue Dou from the University of Queensland in Australia, ran a cross-sectional observational study using health survey data from the US, Europe and England: one that's representative of cross-sections of the populations involved at a single point in time, and based on observational data. The researchers only used variables that were available across all the survey data to estimate participants' dementia status, to compensate for any missing observations. "Birth cohorts born more recently were less likely to develop dementia in all three regions, albeit at different rates," the authors state in a journal article. "This decreasing trend was more pronounced among women than men." They particularly focused on people aged 71 years or older, with the data sorted into age groups spanning four years. Compared with the older groups, younger cohorts had lower age-specific dementia prevalence rates: 21.2 percent for those in the US study; 38.9 percent in the European study; and 28.3 percent in England. "For example, in the US, among people aged 81 to 85, 25.1 percent of those born between 1890-1913 had dementia, compared to 15.5 percent of those born between 1939-1943," economist and co-author Sabrina Lenzen of the University of Queensland told Nicola Davis at The Guardian. The team cautions their data may not accurately reflect what is happening in minority groups. But the findings suggest that, while aging populations globally will probably mean greater numbers of people living with dementia, the percentage of people affected may actually be decreasing, at least among the groups studied. This generational decrease in dementia risk, the study's authors write, "has important implications for health care planning, long-term care policies, and workforce requirements in aging populations." Eyes to the sky to see 2025's Full Strawberry Moon! Do you have reasonably clear skies this week? If so, pause for a few minutes during the next few nights, turn your gaze to the sky, and take in the beauty of the final Full Moon of Spring 2025. This Full Moon is timed to occur at 7:44 UTC on June 11, or 3:44 a.m. EDT. However, due to the Moon's distance and its size in the sky, at a glance it will appear full from Monday evening through until just after midnight Thursday morning. Viewing the Moon through a telescope or a good pair of binoculars, though, will reveal the very thin sliver of the Moon's disk in shadow on Monday and Wednesday nights. This is the final Full Moon of spring for this year, and the first 'normal' sized Full Moon after a string of three micromoons in March, April, and May. If you'd like to see the Moon look exceptionally big, head out around sunset and look for it on the eastern horizon. Or, if you're up before the Sun rises, look for it as it is setting in the west. Each of the 13 moons was given a name, similar to the months of the Gregorian calendar. June's full moon is nearly upon us, but skygazers might notice something slightly different about the 2025 strawberry moon. The full moon in June 2025 will make its debut about 14% smaller and 30% dimmer than it typically is because the moon will be in apogee, its farthest point from Earth. You might hear some people refer to this strawberry moon as a 'micromoon,' similar to how it's called a 'supermoon' when in perigee, or the closest point to Earth. NASA says that the strawberry moon will hit its peak around 2:44 a.m. CT on Wednesday, but your best bet to see the moon at its fullest will likely be Tuesday night. The strawberry moon will peak at 2:44 a.m. CT/3:44 a.m. ET on Wednesday in Florida. The best time to view the full moon will be on Tuesday night, according to NASA. The moon's orbit will be in apogee when it reaches its fullest phase early Wednesday morning. Apogee describes the moon's orbit when it is at its farthest point from Earth. During apogee, a full moon is often called a "micromoon" because it will appear smaller than it normally does. The difference isn't likely to be noticed by most people, however. The nicknames used to describe full moons have origins that can be traced back to Native American, Colonial American and European sources, according to the Farmer's Almanac. June's strawberry moon might give people the impression that it will rise with a reddish-pink hue, similar to a blood moon, but the nickname is a bit more literal than that. According to the Farmer's Almanac, the strawberry moon nickname has been used by Native American Algonquian, along with the Ojibwe, Dakota and Lakota peoples, to mark a time when strawberries are ready to be picked. The strawberry moon nickname might have prevailed as the most popular in recent times, but it's certainly not the only name given to June's full moon. The Anishinaabe people called it the blooming moon due to the flowering season; the Cherokee tribe referred to it as the green corn moon and the Western Abenaki used the name hoer moon, which suggested that it was time to tend to young crops, according to the almanac. The moon takes about 29½ days to revolve around Earth, which is called a lunar cycle, according to the Lunar and Planetary Institute. As the moon moves through its various stages, it experiences several phases of partial light. These range from a banana-shaped crescent moon, a D-shaped quarter moon and a nearly full gibbous moon. There are seven full moons remaining this year; three will be supermoons.
