She emphasized that Bahrain prioritizes the execution of these global objectives at both national and regional levels, working within a comprehensive strategy to ensure a well-developed and sustainable living environment for its citizens.

The assembly discussed a report on 'The Right to Access Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation as a Human Right in Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Regions.'
Mrs. Qassim underscored the fundamental necessity of access to clean water and proper sanitation, stating that these are not only human rights but also critical components of the sixth Sustainable Development Goal, which aims to ensure universal access to clean water and sanitation managed in a sustainable manner.
She further affirmed that Bahrain boasts a highly developed infrastructure ensuring the availability of safe drinking water for all citizens through extensive desalination projects. Additionally, the Kingdom has made substantial investments in upgrading wastewater management systems, contributing to environmental conservation and public health.
Highlighting the significance of international and regional collaboration in this field, Mrs. Qassim noted that such cooperation is crucial, particularly in regions facing water scarcity and environmental challenges. Bahrain strongly advocates for collective efforts among member states of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean to enhance regional initiatives, ensuring the provision of clean water and sanitation for all. She reiterated that access to these essential services is a fundamental right that enhances public health and improves the quality of life across the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions.

Iran says Israel attack 'declaration of war'

Tensions in the Middle East surged dramatically on Friday after Iran accused Israel of launching a large-scale wave of airstrikes targeting its military and nuclear infrastructure, calling the assault a 'declaration of war.' The attacks reportedly killed several senior Iranian officials, including Armed Forces Chief of Staff Mohammad Bagheri and top nuclear scientists. Iranian authorities reported that the Israeli offensive struck nearly 100 locations across the country, including critical nuclear facilities such as the Natanz underground enrichment site. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned Israel of a 'bitter and painful' response, while the Iranian military vowed there would be 'no limits' to their retaliation. In a formal letter to the United Nations, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi urged the UN Security Council to immediately intervene, denouncing the Israeli strikes as a violation of international law and a destabilizing act of aggression. Meanwhile, the Israeli military confirmed it had carried out the precision strikes using around 200 fighter jets. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the attacks targeted the 'heart of Iran's nuclear enrichment program,' aiming to prevent Iran from reaching what Israeli intelligence described as the 'point of no return.' US President Donald Trump acknowledged prior knowledge of the Israeli operation in an interview with Fox News but insisted that the United States was not directly involved. He reiterated that Tehran must never acquire a nuclear weapon, warning Iran not to target American personnel or assets in response. The United States emphasized its non-involvement while also drawing down staff in the region due to the risk of escalation. Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a direct warning to Tehran not to retaliate against US military bases, asserting that any such move would carry severe consequences. Iranian state media confirmed the deaths of high-ranking military officials, including the head of the Revolutionary Guards, Hossein Salami, and six nuclear scientists. A senior adviser to Ayatollah Khamenei was also reportedly wounded in the attacks. Khamenei has since appointed new commanders to replace the fallen officials. The strikes caused widespread panic in Tehran, with deserted streets and long queues forming at petrol stations. Civilian casualties were also reported, including women and children. AFP images showed the aftermath of a strike on a residential building, with significant localized damage. Air traffic was suspended at Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport, and neighboring countries including Iraq and Jordan closed their airspace. Major Gulf airlines canceled flights to and from Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. Jordan's military confirmed that its air defense systems intercepted multiple drones and missiles that had entered its airspace, highlighting the regional spillover risk. Oil prices spiked and global markets reacted with uncertainty, underscoring fears of a broader conflict. The UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stated it is 'closely monitoring' the situation, confirming damage at the Natanz nuclear site. With a sixth round of Iran-US nuclear negotiations scheduled to take place in Oman on Sunday, the attack casts significant doubt over whether talks will proceed. President Trump said he remained hopeful but acknowledged the Israeli offensive could either derail or accelerate the diplomatic process. As the region braces for the next steps, Iran's military reaffirmed its readiness to respond, declaring that Israel had 'crossed all red lines' and would face severe consequences.

Gazabound activist convoy reaches Libyan capital

AFP | Tripoli Hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists in a Gaza-bound convoy reached the Libyan capital of Tripoli on Wednesday as they drive eastward in a bid to break Israel's blockade of the Palestinian territory. The Soumoud convoy -- meaning steadfastness in Arabic -- set off from Tunis in buses and cars on Monday, hoping to pass through divided Libya and Egypt, which organisers say has yet to provide passage permits, to reach Gaza. It was launched the day Israel intercepted an aid ship also attempting to breach its blockade on Gaza, which was carrying 12 people, including campaigner Greta Thunberg and European parliament member Franco-Palestinian Rima Hassan. The land convoy was welcomed by hundreds in Tripoli and escorted through the capital by police patrols. Libya's Tripoli-based Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah hailed the convoy as a 'fraternal humanitarian initiative' that Libyans 'embraced in warmth and solidarity'. 'This is another example of Libya's commitment and generosity in support of the people of Gaza under siege and attack,' the premier said in a statement. After 20 months of war, Israel is facing mounting international pressure to allow more aid into Gaza to alleviate widespread shortages of food and basic supplies. The United Nations has said the Palestinian territory was 'the hungriest place on Earth'.'This visit brings us joy,' said 45-year-old architect Alaa Abdel Razzaq among the crowd in downtown Tripoli welcoming the convoy. Souhour al-Qatif said the gathering in the capital showed that 'the tears of the Libyan people are united with the convoy'. 'It's a great feeling,' she added. 'I feel like I'm not in Libya, but in Gaza, united with my Palestinian brothers.' Organisers have said a dozen buses and around 100 other vehicles were part of the convoy, adding that they expected the number of participants to grow along the way.
