Bahrain Takes Proactive Steps in Achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals
Member of the Shura Council and parliamentary delegation representative, Mrs. Lina Habib Qassim, highlighted Bahrain's proactive approach in implementing the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030, particularly in infrastructure development. She emphasized that Bahrain prioritizes the execution of these global objectives at both national and regional levels, working within a comprehensive strategy to ensure a well-developed and sustainable living environment for its citizens.
Her remarks were made during her participation in the parliamentary delegation at the 19th General Assembly of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), held in Rome, Italy, from February 19 to 21. The assembly discussed a report on 'The Right to Access Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation as a Human Right in Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Regions.'
Mrs. Qassim underscored the fundamental necessity of access to clean water and proper sanitation, stating that these are not only human rights but also critical components of the sixth Sustainable Development Goal, which aims to ensure universal access to clean water and sanitation managed in a sustainable manner.
She further affirmed that Bahrain boasts a highly developed infrastructure ensuring the availability of safe drinking water for all citizens through extensive desalination projects. Additionally, the Kingdom has made substantial investments in upgrading wastewater management systems, contributing to environmental conservation and public health.
Highlighting the significance of international and regional collaboration in this field, Mrs. Qassim noted that such cooperation is crucial, particularly in regions facing water scarcity and environmental challenges. Bahrain strongly advocates for collective efforts among member states of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean to enhance regional initiatives, ensuring the provision of clean water and sanitation for all. She reiterated that access to these essential services is a fundamental right that enhances public health and improves the quality of life across the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions.

Gazabound activist convoy reaches Libyan capital
AFP | Tripoli Hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists in a Gaza-bound convoy reached the Libyan capital of Tripoli on Wednesday as they drive eastward in a bid to break Israel's blockade of the Palestinian territory. The Soumoud convoy -- meaning steadfastness in Arabic -- set off from Tunis in buses and cars on Monday, hoping to pass through divided Libya and Egypt, which organisers say has yet to provide passage permits, to reach Gaza. It was launched the day Israel intercepted an aid ship also attempting to breach its blockade on Gaza, which was carrying 12 people, including campaigner Greta Thunberg and European parliament member Franco-Palestinian Rima Hassan. The land convoy was welcomed by hundreds in Tripoli and escorted through the capital by police patrols. Bahrain enhances rights of persons with disabilities
The Kingdom of Bahrain is committed to enhancing the rights of persons with disabilities. This was emphasised by His Excellency Osama bin Saleh Al Alawi, Minister of Social Development and Chairman of the 44th session of the Council of Arab Ministers of Social Affairs, as he chaired a meeting of Arab ministers and heads of delegations held on the sidelines of the 18th Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (COSP18) at the United Nations headquarters. Al Alawi said this commitment is reflected in policies and legislation that ensure dignity and full integration into society, alongside ongoing support for collective Arab efforts in this domain. He highlighted the vital role played by the United Nations in advancing disability and social development issues. The minister commended the fruitful partnership between the organisation and Arab states. Regional cooperation Al Alawi emphasised the importance of regional cooperation and the exchange of successful experiences, calling for intensified joint Arab efforts to support the rights of persons with disabilities and develop comprehensive and sustainable responses, while ensuring adherence to relevant international commitments.
