No proof of MCA being sidelined, say Umno leaders

PETALING JAYA : Several Umno leaders have denied claims that the party is now prioritising DAP, a long-time adversary of its Barisan Nasional coalition partner MCA.
Umno Supreme Council member Shahaniza Shamsuddin said MCA continues to be involved in Umno programmes and even holds positions in BN-led state governments, such as in Pahang.
She cited the appointment of Temerloh MCA chief Wong Tat Chee as an assemblyman in Pahang, as well as that of former MCA Youth chief Nicole Wong as a special officer to deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also Umno president.

'MCA should focus on strengthening BN to win the 16th general election and move forward,' she told FMT, dismissing the allegations as merely the personal opinion of certain individuals.
Yesterday, former MCA vice-president Ti Lian Ker said the party must assert its own direction in view of the fact that members were increasingly feeling that they had been left in the lurch by BN lynchpin Umno.
He said MCA members were of the view that Umno was favouring DAP, the party's bitter rival.
Ti said that it would be 'irresponsible' for MCA to abandon BN in its current state, but felt the party should strive to win seats in the next general election without relying on its allies.
Meanwhile, Puteri Umno chief Nurul Amal Fauzi urged MCA to work with Umno to rebuild BN, which has seen a steady decline since losing its grip on federal power after GE14.
'BN is the best coalition to represent all communities and was widely accepted until the rise of Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional. We should be thinking not just about our respective parties, but about the country,' she said, calling on MCA to join forces in attracting young voters.
'Together, we must help them understand the importance of politics in ensuring national stability for all.'

Ayer Hitam MCA passes resolution to retain Dr Wee, Ling as GE16 candidates
YONG PENG: Local MCA leaders in the Ayer Hitam division of Johor have passed resolutions for current MP Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong and Yong Peng state assemblyman Ling Tian Soon to be renominated to contest the 16th General Election. These were among six resolutions that were passed during the division's annual general meeting, which was attended by MCA president Dr Wee and Ling, who is also MCA Youth chief. The other resolutions that were approved by the some 200 delegates on Sunday (June 1) were to support Dr Wee to steer the party back to its former glory amidst political instability as party president. They also want Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi to continue leading the state and Johor Barisan Nasional. The division also urged the Education Ministry to review the new matriculation entry requirement, where those who scored A- in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia are not considered to have attained an A, and also explain why Chinese schools were given lower allocations in last year's budget.

Umno legal bureau examining anti-party hopping laws in Zafrul's case, says Azalina
PETALING JAYA: Umno's legal bureau is checking if anti-party hopping laws apply to Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, says Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. "Umno's legal bureau has been asked to study the implications of anti-party hopping laws – including the position of senator – to ensure that the next course of action complies with the legal framework. "Each minister is appointed as a representative of their respective party. Umno remains committed towards serving the nation in the unity government setting and will continue to fulfil the people's mandate," said the Umno information chief on Sunday(June 1). Azalina, who is also a Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), said she and Umno respect the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister's decision but stressed that Cabinet positions are given based on party mandate and not in a personal capacity. Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani and Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan had said that Tengku Zafrul was not bound by anti-party hopping laws because he is not an elected representative. Bernama reported Mohamad as saying that the pledge signed by Tengku Zafrul as a Barisan Nasional candidate in the 15th General Election could not be enforced as well because he did not win the seat he contested. "That (the pledge) is not included within the scope of the agreement because Tengku Zafrul did not win the election. That is a pledge made by an elected representative, a state assemblyman or a Member of Parliament. "If they win, the seat belongs to the party, not the individual. If the candidate wins, they sign many agreements, including reimbursing costs incurred by the party. "Tengku Zafrul did not win. He became a minister on the basis of being a senator," he told reporters after a luncheon on Saturday (May 31).
