Quiet and mild for Memorial Day in Maryland

Memorial Day in Maryland started with clouds for much of the state and a few light showers in southern zones. The Baltimore area stayed north of the showers but a few locations in southern Maryland and the lower Eastern Shore woke up to a couple of rain drops. Sunshine returns late in the morning going into the afternoon, mixing with some clouds. Temperatures peak in the 70s this afternoon away from the mountains and the beaches. Across the state it looks like a great weather day to get outside for any reason - exercise, parades, cookouts. With low humidity, it'll be another great day to open up the windows and let the light breeze through. Clouds will eventually start to fill back in later today. We stay dry through late on Tuesday. Tuesday night into Wednesday brings our next round of widespread rain to the area. Showers on Wednesday may be heavy at times. High temperatures on Wednesday briefly dip back into the mid to upper 60s. Thunderstorms look more likely on Thursday but overall rain chances look more scattered for the end of the work week.

Severe Weather Threat Forces Unfortunate Changes to Mardi Gras in New Orleans

With wind advisory alerts sweeping across the country, reportedly affecting up to 85 million people, Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans for "Fat Tuesday" have already faced some major adjustments for precautionary safety reasons. According to the National Weather Service in New Orleans, damaging winds could potentially reach up to 60 mph along with a tornado watch warning having officially been extended to 9 p.m. CT on Tuesday night. As a result, two of the biggest parades Mardi Gras has to offer, the Zulu and Rex, were unfortunately forced into early starts with reduced routes—though were said to be successful—while every carnival parade in Jefferson Parish was canceled due to public safety risks: In addition to the cancelation of the parades mentioned above, other parades that were expected to feature bands were modified to feature only floats. But despite the intense high wind warnings being so severe there were concerns that Mardi Gras floats for the parades that did happen "could become unstable at times," the party trucked on as one might expect it would in a city like New Orleans, and on such a cherished day. Some people even arrived to the always spirited festivities with jokes: Yes, even on Mardi Gras, at least one fan of the New Orleans Saints appeared to find some time to work in their blunt assessment of quarterback Derek Carr, who is somewhat surprisingly expected to be back as the team's starter next season. Still, the extended tornado watch warning was nothing to take lightly at all, as NBC News reported that "tornadoes could reach a rating of EF-2, with winds of 111 to 135 mph." On Wednesday, the storm is expected to sweep over to the East Coast, from Florida all the way up to Pennsylvania.
