Pittsburgh leaders help teach kids how to ride bikes safely

Yahoo10-05-2025

Pittsburgh community leaders spent time Friday teaching kids how to ride their bikes safely in the city.
The Promise Center of Homewood organized the event, not only to keep kids safe, but to get them outside and moving.
Volunteers created a track with various obstacles that kids would encounter in their neighborhood.
Organizers say safety lessons like this are crucial.
'Unfortunately, we know that bike safety is a very big concern in our community,' Lytia Brock said. 'We know that kids have actually passed away by being hit by cars, and just wanna make sure they're more aware of being safe while riding bikes.'
Leaders in Homewood have been advocating for safety changes and educating kids after a 9-year-old girl was hit and killed by a car in August 2024.
Organizers hope to keep hosting and growing this event.

Captain arrested for DWI after Bronx boat catches fire near Hart Island, 23 hurt

The man operating a boat that burst into flames near Hart Island in the Bronx, prompting the rescue of nearly two dozen injured passengers, was drunk, cops said Sunday. Joshua Brito, 33, was arrested for reckless endangerment and driving while intoxicated after the boat burst into flames about 8 p.m. Saturday, an NYPD spokeswoman said. The boat is a 35-foot Carver, according to CBS News New York. Personnel aboard FDNY Marine 4, which was patrolling the water until midnight because of the warm weather, saw the fire and rushed to the scene, where firefighters 'plucked three people out of the water,' FDNY Assistant Chief Michael Meyers said. The rest swam to Hart Island, he said. Marine 6 then arrived to extinguish the flames. Twenty three people were injured escaping the boat, cops said. All are in stable condition, cops said, though firefighters said one was initially taken to Jacobi Medical Center with critical injuries. FDNY officials said 20 of the victims needed to be hospitalized. The injured were all adults, their ages ranging between 18 and 58, cops said. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation and the Coast Guard is probing the incident, police said Sunday. Brito's arraignment was pending in Bronx Criminal Court Sunday. He lives in the Bedford Park area of the Bronx, according to cops.
