Pope Leo XIV declares 'I am Roman!' as he completes formalities to become bishop of Rome (AP)
ROME: Pope Leo XIV declared himself a Roman on Sunday as he completed the final ceremonial steps cementing his role as the bishop of Rome.
The first American pope formally took possession of the St John Lateran Basilica, which is Rome's cathedral and seat of the diocese, with an evening Mass attended by Roman priests and faithful.
He then took the popemobile for a visit to St Mary Major, where he prayed before
Pope Francis
' tomb and an icon of the Virgin Mary beloved to many Roman faithful.
In his homily, Leo said he wanted to listen to them "in order to learn, understand and decide things together ".
One of the many titles that Leo assumed when he was elected May 8 was bishop of Rome Given his responsibilities running the 1 4-billion strong universal Catholic Church, popes delegate the day-to-day governance of running of the diocese of Roman to a vicar.
Sunday's ceremonies at the St John Lateran and a stop at St Mary Major basilicas follow Leo's visit last week to the St Paul Outside the Walls basilica Together with St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, the four papal basilicas are the most important basilicas in the West.
Rome's Mayor Roberto Gualtieri welcomed Leo first at the steps to City Hall, noting that his May 8 election fell during a Holy Year, an event occurring every 25 years to invite pilgrims to Rome The city underwent two years of traffic-clogging public works projects to prepare and expects to welcome upward of 30 million people in 2025.

Leo said he felt the "serious but passionate responsibility" to serve all Romans during the Holy Year and beyond.
Wearing his formal red papal cape and brocaded stole, Leo recalled the words he had uttered from the loggia of St Peter's Basilica on the night of his election The Augustinian pope quoted St Augustine in saying: "With you I am Christian, and for you, bishop ".
"By special title, today I can say that for you and with you I am Roman!" Leo said.
The former Robert Prevost succeeded Pope Francis, the first Latin American pope Francis died April 21 and is buried at St Mary Major, near the icon of the Madonna known as the Salus Populi Romani.

'Goa will be the first state to submit an eco-sensitive zone plan to the Centre. We are working on sustainable development; there is no haphazard management,' said Sawant at the regional rural workshop for the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (Gramin). Sawant said that Goa govt is formulating schemes so that even people from the OBC and economically weaker sections can get proper houses in Goa. 'Under the PMAY, we have just 250 beneficiaries. Of those more than 240 houses were already built. But there is a need to conduct a fresh survey under this scheme,' said Sawant. He said that some of the prospective beneficiaries migrated to other states, while there are some people who did not qualify for the scheme even though they required houses. 'There are some people who are living in a joint family, and they cannot benefit from these schemes. We need to expand this scheme, extend the benefits, but these people must settle in the villages and not in the towns,' said Sawant. Insular, paranoid: on Donald Trump, the U.S., legal migration
President Donald Trump's decision to ban citizens from 12 countries from entering the United States, citing national security concerns, is yet another attempt by his five-month-old administration to tear down legal migration. Mr. Trump's decision in 2017, during his first term, to ban citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries had triggered chaos and protests at America's airports, evoked criticism of the unstated racism and xenophobia, and led to legal challenges. This time, Mr. Trump has focused on mostly West Asia and Africa. Citizens from Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen would be banned, while people from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela will face restrictions. The ban applies only to people outside the U.S. but those with active visas who leave the country could face difficulty during re-entry. Mr. Trump argued that the ban, which came days after the arrest of an Egyptian man for carrying out an attack on a group honouring the Gaza hostages, would help prevent terrorist attacks and keep out those who overstay their visas. Egypt, a close American ally, and Spain, which saw 20,000 of its citizens overstay their visas in 2023, are not on the list, but Chad, whose visa overstay number is as low as 400, is. Since his swearing-in as the President, in January, for the second time, Mr. Trump has taken a series of measures to crack down on migration. He has suspended the asylum system at the southern border and ended temporary legal residency for Haitians, Venezuelans and Cubans. He has also removed the legal status of thousands of foreign students and instructed U.S. diplomatic missions to pause scheduling new visa interviews as his administration prepares to vet the social media handles of students and scholars. His policies targeting international students have already spread chaos and uncertainty across America's universities. Now, the outright ban on citizens from a group of countries reinforces the erosion of the self-image of the U.S. — 'the shining city on a hill' as Ronald Reagan once called it — as a pluralistic, open society. Mr. Trump's claim that immigrants bring crime into the U.S. is ill-founded. Many of the people seeking entry into the U.S., from countries that had seen American military intervention, such as Haiti and Afghanistan, are fleeing war, persecution and systemic violence. They are not national security threats but victims in search of refuge. By shutting America's doors on them, and immigrants in general, Mr. Trump is not making the U.S. safer. Rather, he is turning a country, which historically welcomed immigration and has benefited from it, into an insular, paranoid, self-doubting republic.
