CHISINAU, March 27 (Reuters) - Police prevented another pro-Russian opposition politician from leaving ex-Soviet Moldova on Thursday as the detention of the leader of the country's pro-Russian Gagauz ethnic minority further strained relations with Moscow.
Eugenia Gutul, the leader, or bashkan, of Gagauzia, has been in detention since being stopped at the airport on Tuesday in connection with a corruption probe. On Thursday, she urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to help secure her release.

Maia Sandu.
Two pro-Russian parliamentarians, also charged with corruption, have disappeared in the past week.
All those under suspicion or facing charges are associates of fugitive pro-Russian business magnate Ilan Shor, sentenced to 15 years in prison in connection with the 2014-2015 disappearance of $1 billion from the Moldovan banking system.
Alexei Lungu, a member of the pro-Russian opposition, was stopped at Chisinau airport on Thursday and told he could not leave the country. He told Reuters the action amounted to "revenge and political terror."
"We will fight - both openly and lawfully. Neither intimidation nor blackmail will stop us," he said.
Gagauzia, a region of 140,000 people in the south of Moldova, is dominated by ethnic Turks who favour close ties with Russia, adhere to Orthodox Christianity and have had uneasy relations with central authorities since Moldovan independence in 1991.
In her appeal, Gagauz leader Gutul asked Putin "to use the entire arsenal of diplomatic, political and legal means to put pressure on Moldovan authorities to secure an immediate end to political repression and my rapid release." She issued a similar appeal to Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.
A Chisinau court postponed until Friday a decision on a prosecution request to extend her 72-hour detention.
Gutul is due to be sentenced soon on charges of corruption and financing a political bloc led by Shor from exile in Russia.
Sandu is spearheading a drive to secure European Union membership for Moldova, one of Europe's poorest countries, and has never recognised Gutul's 2023 election as bashkan.
The president has denounced Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which is on Moldova's eastern border, and has accused the Kremlin of trying to unseat her.
Gutul's detention follows the unexplained disappearance last week of pro-Russian parliamentarian Alexandr Nesterovschi on the day he was sentenced to 12 years in prison on similar corruption charges. A second lawmaker, Irina Lozovan, awaiting a verdict on similar charges, has also disappeared.
Moldovan authorities accuse Shor of funnelling money into the country illegally with the aim of using his banned "Victory" bloc to secure the election of pro-Russian lawmakers in a parliamentary poll later this year.

The fresh appeal for united military might comes after US President Donald Trump unveiled an ambitious Golden Dome plan that would set taxpayers back more than half a trillion dollars, about a quarter of money spent by the US throughout the duration of the two-decade long operation in Iraq. Mr Rutte said the Europe would need a "quantum leap" in building its defence systems with a warning that Putin is "speeding up, not slowing down" his militaristic ambitions. Mr Rutte said Europe needed to be prepared to protect the continent from any attacks from Russia. He added: "The fact is, we need a quantum leap in our collective defence. "The fact is, we must have more forces and capabilities to implement our defence plans in full. The fact is, danger will not disappear even when the war in Ukraine ends." He called for militaries to stock up with thousands of additional tanks and vehicles as well as building an arsenal of millions of artillery shells. He also hinted at a possible nightmare scenario where Putin manages to pull together allies in China, North Korea and Iran. The NATO chief added Russia is capable of producing in three months what the whole of the organisation takes a year to do. According to The Sun, he said: "Wishful thinking will not keep us safe. "We cannot dream away the danger. Hope is not a strategy. So NATO has to become a stronger, fairer and more lethal alliance." Mr Rutte now wants NATO members to commit to 3.5 per cent of GDP by 2032 as well as an additional 1.5 per cent on broader security-related expenditure. It comes as NATO chiefs aim to keep Mr Trump content with allies after he demanded each commit to 5 per cent spending, far above the previous 2 per cent of GDP. He added NATO members are expected to agree to the proposal when leaders from the 32 countries attend a meeting at The Hague between June 24 and 25. He said: "It will be a NATO-wide commitment and a defining moment for the alliance" US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth last week said allies were close to reaching an agreement about reaching the 5 per cent target. He said on Thursday, adding: "That combination constitutes a real commitment, and we think every country can step up." The return of Mr Trump to the White House sent shockwaves through Europe with some nations raising concerns the US was no longer a steadfast ally. Mr Rutte added: "Danger will not disappear even when the war in Ukraine ends. We must have more forces and capabilities to implement our defence plans in full."

Moldovan minister ignores recommendation, says schools to keep studying history of Romanians
CHISINAU, June 9 (Reuters) - Moldova's education minister said on Monday that schools would keep teaching the subject "history of the Romanians," despite an official ruling that the term was unfair to the ex-Soviet state's ethnic minorities. Dan Perciun issued his statement amid a debate over a history textbook denounced by pro-Russian opposition parties and Moldova's Jewish community on grounds it exaggerates Moldova's links with neighbouring Romania and whitewashes the actions of Romania's pro-Nazi wartime leader Ion Antonescu. "We are continuing in the same vein as before," Perciun said in his weekly online address. "After 150 years of Russification, we believe that we can and must study the history of the Romanians in our schools." Perciun said he felt no need to be bound by a recommendation by the Council for the Prevention of Discrimination that the subject area's title be changed to a more neutral name to reflect Moldova's multi-ethnic makeup. Some 150 years before independence, Moldova was, in turns, part of the Russian Empire, "Greater Romania" and the Soviet Union. Official census figures show 77.2% of the population to be ethnic Moldovans and a further 7.9% to be Romanians - though the distinction is often blurred as both countries speak Romanian. There are also large communities of ethnic Russians, Ukrainians and others and Russian is still widely spoken. Pro-European president Maia Sandu, highly critical of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and what she says are attempts to destabilise her government, is pressing ahead with a campaign to join the European Union by 2030. Educators, historians and civil society groups are taking part in a country-wide debate on the new textbook, also entitled "History of the Romanians and General History." Alexander Bilinchis, chairman of Moldova's Jewish community, called for the textbook's withdrawal on grounds it downplays the extent of Nazi pogroms and mass deportations of Jews. The ministry is to consider the findings of the country-wide discussions and decide whether to maintain the textbook in the school system or alter it.
