TOYOTA Motor Corp. has invested $250 million in Joby Aviation Inc., completing the first half of a previously announced $500 million commitment and becoming the air taxi maker's largest shareholder.
The investment, originally expected to close in 2024, is part of Toyota's pledge to boost its total funding in the Santa Cruz, California-based company to $894 million. The latest tranche raises Toyota's stake to 15.3%, surpassing that of Joby Chief Executive Officer JoeBen Bevirt.
A US spokesman for Toyota confirmed the payment. Joby has said it expects the second tranche from Toyota to close later this year.
Joby shares rose 3.5% to $7.12 as of 6:20 p.m. in extended trading in New York. The stock had closed regular trading Tuesday down about 15% for the year.
Joby is among a handful of companies developing eVTOL aircraft — electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles — that plan to fly customers on short commuter journeys via battery-powered air taxis.

'This milestone further cements the collaboration and alignment between our two companies,' Tetsuo 'Ted' Ogawa, CEO of Toyota North America, said in a statement Tuesday.
Joby said recently it now aims to start commercial services in Dubai by early 2026 after having previously targeted the end of this year. Certification for flight operations by the US Federal Aviation Administration and regulators in other countries is still pending.
Toyota began financing Joby in 2020, two years after its venture capital arm participated in a funding round. –BLOOMBERG

Eco group proposes village waste centres in Sabah
KOTA KINABALU: A Sabah-based eco-tourism group seeks government support for a village clean-up and environmental education programme in Kinabatangan, one of the state's richest biodiversity hotspots. The Kinabatangan-Corridor of Life Tourism Operators Association (KiTA) proposes a three-part initiative. This includes constructing new waste disposal centres in Kampung Bilit and Kampung Sukau and a community river-cleaning awareness campaign. KiTA president Johnny Lim said the initiative aims to tackle pressing waste management issues and improve environmental stewardship in the region. "We hope the Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry (KePKAS) will support this effort through a matching grant. The programme is not just about infrastructure. It is about educating the community on proper waste disposal and river conservation." "Cleaner rivers and villages benefit residents and help sustain eco-tourism in the long run," he said after presenting the proposal to Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew during a recent courtesy visit. Lim noted that the existing waste disposal centre in Kampung Bilit, built by KiTA in 2015, has become rundown and now undermines both the local environment and tourism appeal. "We propose to build a new facility near the current site, working with local authorities to ensure regular waste collection," he said. Liew welcomed the initiative, calling it a meaningful step towards protecting Kinabatangan's natural assets while strengthening community participation in conservation. "The Ministry will consider the application. We appreciate KiTA's dedication to environmental sustainability, especially in areas critical to eco-tourism like Kinabatangan," she said. Also present at the meeting were KePKAS senior assistant secretary Dr Dayang Siti Maryam Mohd Hanan, Sabah Wildlife Department director Mohd Soffian Abu Bakar, and KiTA's immediate past president, Alexander Yee Kok Tsen.

Dubai's MBS Global eyes Johor for tech, finance investment expansion
KUALA LUMPUR: Dubai-based MBS Global Holdings, which manages over US$14 billion in assets worldwide, has expressed strong interest in positioning Johor as its next strategic investment hub in Southeast Asia. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the state government held a high-level meeting with MBS Global on May 29, in Kuala Lumpur, where the firm outlined its investment appetite in key sectors such as digital technology, Islamic digital banking, green innovation and real estate. "MBS Global's interest is a strong signal of Johor's rising profile among global institutional investors. We view this as a potential catalyst for high-impact investments that can generate quality jobs and spur inclusive economic growth," he said. The firm is no stranger to ambitious ventures. Its recent US$8.8 billion investment to develop a blockchain-based financial hub in the Maldives is projected to create over 16,000 jobs by 2030. Onn Hafiz said Johor's appeal has been further strengthened by the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) initiatives, which offer cross-border advantages and regional market access to international players. "The Johor government is committed to turning investment into real benefits for the people, not just in figures, but in the form of job creation, technology transfer and sustainable economic development," he said. MBS Global Holdings' potential entry aligns with Johor's strategy to attract future-driven industries and long-term capital. It is also in line with the state's economic blueprint.
