Video game preview – Anno 117: Pax Romana is a real-time city-building epic
I have spent hundreds of hours on Civilization and its sequels, but I haven't played many other strategy games beyond Amplitude Studios' works, such as Humankind and Big Huge Games' Rise of Nations. When I had a chance to preview Ubisoft's Anno 117: Pax Romana, I did not know what to expect aside from it being a historical strategy game, but with a more focused era. I was expecting something Civ-ish, but I was wrong. Anno 117 is different to anything I've played before. The coming PC game puts players in the role of a new Roman governor during a relatively peaceful 200-year span. Players start with a single settlement, but they'll have to expand and build a network of eternal cities. They'll start in Latium – the area around Rome in today's west-central Italy – with a Mediterranean climate and ruins from the past. The 'world' map from Anno 117: Pax Romana. What is an ‘ita bag'? Plus the most popular toys, dolls and figures now
The 'Ita bag' hashtag went viral on Weibo – China's answer to X – in summer 2024 when Quan Hongchan, who won two golds in diving at the 2024 Paris Olympics, showed off gifts given to her by fans, from badges to cute toys, inside her transparent PVC bag. Advertisement An ita bag, which means 'painful bag' in Japanese, humorously denotes the great pain – and expense and effort – the wearer has put into lavishly decorating their bag. The bag is usually made of canvas or nylon with a clear see-through front. The trend stems from Japan's otaku subculture, which is defined by obsessive fans of interests such as video games, anime and manga. So invested were otaku in their interests that they would go through great lengths to seek out merchandise from their favourite titles or franchises and carry them inside a personalised bag. This manifestation of love and obsession soon caught on among trendsetters and the ita bag became an essential fashion accessory for people attending concerts and conventions. While keychains, badges and buttons remain popular choices for decorating an ita bag, there is now also an array of more elaborate items that can turn a PVC bag into a mobile shop window. Welcome to Wrexham, that'll be US$475 million please. Hollywood pair looking to cash in
Wrexham AFC, the Welsh football club co-owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are reportedly looking to sell a stake in the team that would set the franchise's valuation at US$475 million. Sources said the club was looking for an investor to join the Hollywood stars, who bought Wrexham for US$2.5 million in late 2020. Since then, the team have become the subject of a popular documentary series on FX – Welcome to Wrexham – and have earned promotion through England's system for a record three straight years. Internal talks were focused on how to raise capital to help Wrexham compete in the Championship next season, one step below the Premier League, with the latter arguably the top football league in the world. The projected value would represent a nearly 19,000 per cent jump in the team's worth in less than five years. Rob McElhenney (left) and Ryan Reynolds bought Wrexham in late 2020.
