Ex-UFC champ Francis Ngannou 'involved in fatal motorbike crash' as girl, 17, killed

Daily Mirror29-04-2025

Francjson Ngannou - who recently became a world heavyweight champion in the Professional Fighters League - is reported to have been involved in a fatal motorbike crash in his home country of Cameroon
Former UFC star Francis Ngannou has allegedly been involved in a tragic motorbike accident in Cameroon that resulted in the death of a 17-year-old girl, despite the former heavyweight champion's attempts to save her.
The crash is reported to have occurred in the Omnisports district of the capital Yaounde, with several local news outlets, including Camer.be and ActuCameroun, reporting that Ngannou rushed the injured girl to Yaounde General Hospital, where she sadly passed away.

The exact details of the incident are disputed, with some suggesting Ngannou was on the motorbike that hit the girl, while others imply she was riding a motorbike that was struck by a car carrying Ngannou.

The incident is said to have taken place over the Easter weekend. The deceased girl, identified locally as Ntsama Brigitte Manuella, underwent surgery before her death but was unable to be saved, leaving Ngannou 'devastated'.
Ngannou, who briefly transitioned from UFC to boxing and is currently participating in the Professional Fighters League, reportedly covered the girl's medical costs, as per the Express. Reach have reached out to Ngannou's representatives for comment.
In a heartbreaking revelation last April, Ngannou shared that his 15-month-old son Kobe had passed away suddenly. Kobe reportedly received medical attention after fainting twice due to a brain malformation. Doctors initially thought he would recover following treatment.
However, after Ngannou had made the trip from Cameroon to Qatar for a training camp, he received heartbreaking news during a devastating phone call with his brother. Unbeknownst to him, a nurse was breaking the tragic update to his family that his son had passed away.
While speaking on Joe Rogan's podcast, Ngannou recounted the heart-wrenching moment with raw emotion: "[She said] 'Well, he's gone', Just like that. He's gone. What do you mean he's gone? How come he's gone? This kid was 15 months, he was bigger than 15 months. He was growing. He was the most joyful, happy kid around. What do you mean he's gone? Gone where? That was it."
Ngannou returned to MMA triumphantly with his last fight in October 2024, when he secured a knockout victory over Renan Ferreira, claiming the PFL heavyweight title.
Post-UFC, Ngannou briefly switched disciplines, stepping into boxing where he faced defeats by Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua in much-talked-about fights in Saudi Arabia.

Amanda Nunes confirms mammoth UFC return after intense staredown with new champion Kayla Harrison

Amanda Nunes has confirmed her intention to make a mammoth return to the UFC after engaging in an intense staredown with newly-crowned bantamweight champion Kayla Harrison. Nunes is widely considered the greatest women's fighter in UFC history, boasting the accolade as the first women to ever hold two title simultaneously while also holding the record for longest unbeaten streak in women's UFC history on nine. She bid farewell to the sport in 2023, retiring on top as she vacated both her titles to enjoy her riches and focus on her family. Now, however, she appears to be on her way back to the cage after Harrison invited her into the Octagon following her title win at UFC 316, stoking the fire for a mouth-watering title clash down the line.' 'I see you Amanda,' she said in her post-fight interview. 'Come on up. This is the next fight. 'This is the greatest fighter of all time, for a long time I've said I want what she has. I have a belt, she has a legacy, let's put it all on the line.' Joe Rogan asked Nunes if she planned to accept the challenge, to which the former two-division champion said: 'Yes definitely. We knew this was going to happen. Now, we're going to do it. I'm more than happy to come back and fight you.' After exchanging pleasantries, the pair then got the money shot in a vehement staredown in the middle of the Octagon, evoking a raucous reaction from the New Jersey crowd. It leaves the women's bantamweight division in its strongest position in years, now with a marquee bout in the pipeline. The announcement preceded Merab Dvalishvili 's bantamweight title rematch with Sean O'Malley, which the Georgian steamrolled to victory in to stake his claim as the best to ever do it in his division.

Dvalishvili, Harrison win bantamweight belts at UFC 316

NEWARK, New Jersey, June 8 (Reuters) - Georgia's Merab Dvalishvili scored a second-round submission win over Sean O'Malley to retain his bantamweight title at UFC 316 on Saturday, with Kayla Harrison also winning by submission in the co-main event, tapping out Juliana Pena to claim the women's bantamweight crown. With President Donald Trump sitting cage-side at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, Dvalishvili set about defending the title he won from O'Malley in September by putting his opponent under tremendous early pressure, stalking him around the cage and mixing up his striking with takedown attempts. O'Malley defended well against his opponent's aggressive offensive wrestling but was eventually taken down in both rounds, and Dvalishvili ended the fight by using his crushing top pressure to secure a choke at the 4:42 mark of the second round. "I'm on top of the world. I'm a world champion. I come from nothing. I'm so grateful to inspire so many young generations to show my example," the 34-year-old Dvalishvili said in a post-fight interview. Asked about his incredible stamina and pressure, he said he was nothing special and that it all came down to training. "It's just work - every day, repeat, training. You know, number one for me is just wake up, training and after I can hang out, enjoy with my friends, go to church, looking for wife or whatever you want to do," he explained. In the co-main event, two-time Olympic judo champion Harrison used her superb grappling to dominate Pena, locking in a kimura submission with five seconds to go in the second round. In her victory speech, Harrison called out retired Brazilian former two-weight champ Amanda Nunes, summoning her into the cage where the two agreed that they would face off in a future fight. Nunes has not fought since beating Irene Aldana in June 2023.
