Doctor's illegal butt enhancements in FL left patients feeling burning, feds say
A doctor promised that silicone injections he used for butt enhancements were 'safe' — but many of his patients had bad reactions, including some who went to other doctors to have the silicone removed, according to federal court filings.
Now, Nhan Pham, 54, of Orlando, is facing up to three years in prison, according to a May 8 news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida.
Pham misled patients when he assured the silicone oil he ordered online and injected into their bodies during gluteal and butt enhancement procedures was ''natural,' and would dissolve over time,' federal prosecutors said.
Some patients felt 'severe pain' as well as burning, discoloration, itchiness, soreness and hardness at their injection sites after receiving injections from Pham at his office in Kissimmee and his Orlando home between 2015 and 2019, according to prosecutors.
Silicone injections for body enhancements are not only dangerous, but they're illegal, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Pham, who's accused of violating the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, has pleaded guilty to a federal charge: receipt in interstate commerce and proffered delivery of an adulterated device, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
His defense attorney, Fritz J. Scheller, told McClatchy News on May 8 that while Pham 'has accepted responsibility for his actions, they should not be the sole measure of the man.'
Pham served in the U.S. military and 'has provided exemplary service to this country' and 'to a countless number of his patients,' Scheller said.
He added that several patients have expressed support for Pham.
For butt enhancement procedures, Pham had patients pay him in cash, according to court documents. He was paid $20,400 in total by six people who received silicone oil injections, prosecutors said.
Injections offered to undercover agent
The gallons of unapproved silicone Pham ordered online was linked to a U.S. subsidiary of a company located in Japan, according to prosecutors, who said the oil wasn't 'medical grade.'
Pham got the silicone oil from an online shop, which 'sourced' the oil from another company, which sourced the silicone from the Japan-based company, prosecutors wrote in filings.
Pham was implicated in the criminal case after prosecutors said he offered injections to an undercover agent in September 2019.
His sentencing hearing is scheduled for Aug. 14, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
In the four years that Pham performed the illegal butt enhancement procedures, according to prosecutors, the FDA warned the public about injectable silicone.
In a 2017 alert, the agency said unregulated silicone products used for butt, breast and other body enhancements could result in 'serious injuries and disfigurement.'
In the U.S., silicone injections are only allowed to be used during eye surgeries, specifically retinal detachment procedures, according to ScienceDirect.

Virginia man convicted in 2023 ambush, murder of NJ councilwoman
A man accused of ambushing and killing New Jersey councilwoman and evangelical minister Eunice Dwumfour was found guilty Monday of her murder. Rashid Ali Bynum, 30, was convicted by a jury of nine men and three women after five hours of deliberation Friday and another hour and 15 minutes on Monday morning, the Newark Star Ledger reported. Dwumfour's husband and other family members wept at the verdict. The Newark-born and raised Dwumfour, 30, a Republican serving her first term on the Sayreville Council, had just dropped off a roommate after coming home from Walmart the night she was shot. She went to park while he brought the groceries into their rented home at the Camelot at La Mer apartment complex. At 7:22 p.m. she was shot 14 times while sitting in her car. The car rolled downhill about 100 feet and smashed into two parked cars. Surveillance footage later surfaced of a mysterious figure fleeing the scene, corroborating neighbors' descriptions. Dwumfour had beaten a Democratic incumbent in 2021 to become the town's first Black elected official. She was also a staple in the community for her work in the church. She lived at the Camelot at La Mer apartment complex with her preteen daughter and two roommates. Just a few months earlier she had a fellow pastor of her Nigeria-based church, the prosperity gospel group Champions Royal Assembly. Husband Peter Ezechukwu was due to arrive from Nigeria that spring. Police finally caught up with and arrested Bynum, a former church associate of Dwumfour's, in August 2023. He was indicted on murder and weapons charges the same month and denied bail. Bynum's attorney, Michael Ashley, told reporters after the verdict 'there was no direct evidence' his client had pulled the trigger, and that Bynum 'almost certainly' planned to appeal. A national from the People's Republic of China (PRC) has been arrested after allegedly smuggling biological materials into the U.S. and making false statements to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers about the contents of her packages. The Department of Justice said Chengxuan Han is charged with smuggling goods into the U.S. and making false statements. According to the complaint, Han is a citizen of the PRC who is working on her Ph.D. at the College of Life Science and Technology in the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan. Han allegedly sent four packages to the U.S. from the PRC in 2024 and 2025, containing concealed biological material. The packages were sent to individuals at a laboratory at the University of Michigan. She also allegedly confessed to making false statements to CBP officers during the inspection. Wen, a citizen of the People's Republic of China, came to the U.S. in 2012 on a student visa, where he remained illegally despite his visa expiring in December 2013. Before coming to the U.S., the DOJ said, Wen met with North Korean government officials at a North Korean Embassy in China. At the meeting, the officials directed Wen to obtain goods on behalf of North Korea. Foreign Nationals Charged Amid Trump Visa Crackdown For Scheme To Smuggle Us Military Equipment Into China Nearly 10 years later, North Korean government officials contacted Wen using an online messaging platform in 2022, instructing him to purchase and smuggle firearms, sensitive technology and ammunition, from the U.S. to North Korea via China. The DOJ said the plea agreement shows Wen shipped at least three containers of firearms from Port of Long Beach in California to China, which then went to North Korea, in 2023. He also took steps to hide that he was shipping firearms to North Korea illegally by falsifying information regarding the contents of the containers. He then drove the firearms to California, where he arranged to have them shipped. According to the DOJ, Wen purchased a firearms business in Houston in May 2023 using money from one of his contacts in North Korea. By December 2023, one of the shipments left Port of Long Beach and arrived in Hong Kong in January 2024. It was then transported from Hong Kong to Nampo, North Korea. Wen intended to send another shipment to North Korea containing about 60,000 rounds of 9mm ammunition in September, as requested by North Korean officials, the DOJ said. The DOJ added that he also acquired or offered to acquire a civilian airplane engine and thermal imaging system that could be mounted on a drone or some other aircraft for reconnaissance and target identification. North Korean officials wired Wen about $2 million during the operation, to be used for obtaining firearms and other goods. Ultimately, he admitted during the plea agreement that he knew it was illegal to ship the items to North Korea, while also admitting to never having the necessary licenses to ship the ammunition, firearms and sensitive technology to North Korea. Wen also confessed to working at the direction of North Korean officials and did not provide notification to the Attorney General of the U.S. As part of the agreement, Wen faces a maximum prison sentence of 20 years for violating the IEEPA and 10 years for acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government.
