AIADMK councillors stage walkout over inaction on property tax reduction
Stating that no action had been taken to reduce property tax, AIADMK councillors staged a walkout from the Corporation council meeting held here on Wednesday.
The meeting, chaired by Mayor S. Nagarathinam, was attended by Corporation Commissioner (in-charge) and Deputy Commissioner K. Dhanalakshmi, Deputy Mayor V. Selvaraj, councillors, and officials.
AIADMK councillor and Leader of the Opposition S. D. Thangamuthu said that since property tax rates were significantly higher compared to other Corporations, a special resolution had been passed during the council meeting held on March 13, 2025. He added that the Commissioner had then informed the council that the resolution would be sent to the government for necessary action. 'But one and a half months since the resolution was passed, no action has been taken so far to reduce the tax,' he said.
Thangamuthu stated that the public was questioning councillors about the delay, and they were unable to provide answers. He also pointed out that shops at the weekly markets near Kanirowther Kulam and Chikkaiah Government Arts and Science College had not yet been auctioned, causing revenue loss to the civic body.
Urging the Corporation to take immediate action on these issues, four AIADMK councillors staged a walkout.
Earlier, councillors requested that the rent for shops in commercial complexes and other buildings constructed under the Smart City Mission be reduced. They also pointed out that drinking water was being supplied only once every five days and urged that the supply be regularised.

AIADMK accuses Rangasamy government of announcing welfare schemes without budgeting for funds for implementation
AIADMK State Secretary A. Anbalagan has accused the Rangasamy government of announcing populist schemes without budgeting for the financial means to implement them. Addressing a press conference, Mr. Anbalagan contended that several welfare measures announced in the last Budget session aimed at the weaker sections and the student community remained only on paper. He cited as examples some of the announcements made by Chief Minister N. Rangasamy such as the proposal to raise monthly assistance for an estimated 70,000 Below Poverty Line families from ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 that entailed an annual additional outgo of about ₹126 crore and another scheme to provide ₹1,000 monthly assistance to over a lakh women who remain outside the umbrella of any government support that was expected to cost the exchequer an estimated ₹120 crore additionally each year. Likewise, the government had proposed to raise the old age pension by ₹500 for 1.81 lakh beneficiaries at an additional financial burden of ₹108.6 crore per year while proposed increases in educational aid for children of fishermen and the differently-abled, marriages and funerals were projected to cost at least ₹400 crore annually, the AIADMK leader said. He wondered whether these empty promises were made only on paper over governance failures to tap revenue or plugging revenue leakages and with the sole intention of hoodwinking voters ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Mr. Anbalagan also flayed the decision to raise liquor prices to increase revenue as it would further burden consumers. Instead, the government should have opted for reforms in the excise sector that had potential to net about ₹750 crore in additional revenue, he said.

Contract conservancy workers and drivers protest in Coimbatore seeking wage hike and pending dues
Over 200 contract conservancy workers and drivers staged a protest in front of the Coimbatore Collectorate on Monday, demanding a hike in wages and the clearance of pending Provident Fund (PF) and Employees' State Insurance (ESI) payments. The protesters urged the Coimbatore Corporation to revise their wages in line with Government Order (GO) 62, which they said stipulates a daily wage of ₹770. They said currently, contract sanitary workers receive ₹15,500 per month, while drivers are paid ₹20,150. 'This has been a long-pending demand. We have been raising it regularly,' said one of the workers. In response, the Corporation stated that PF and ESI contributions have been credited till April, and that talks are ongoing with workers regarding the wage structure.
