Kevin Costner sued by stunt woman over unscripted scene in 'Horizon 2'

Khaleej Times4 days ago

A stunt performer on Horizon 2 sued director and actor Kevin Costner, alleging that she was forced to perform an unscripted scene without proper protocols.
The complainant, Devyn LaBella, was the lead stunt double for Ella Hunt, who played the role of Juliette in the Horizon film franchise, reported Variety.
According to LaBella's lawsuit, Costner, the director allegedly improvised a scene in which Hunt's character would be assaulted sexually in the film.
Hunt refused to perform the scene, so the stunt woman was brought in as her replacement.
"On that day, I was left exposed, unprotected, and deeply betrayed by a system that promised safety and professionalism," LaBella said in a statement as reported by Variety. "What happened to me shattered my trust and forever changed how I move through this industry,"
As per the outlet, the suit alleges that the scene violated protocols negotiated by SAG-AFTRA, which includes a requirement for a 48-hour notice.
The incident took place on May 2, 2023, on the sets in Utah. LaBella's attorney called it a clear example of "male-dominated sexist Hollywood" movie production.
"...Our client was subjected to brutal sexual conduct completely unprotected from the obvious harm," said Kate McFarlane, one of the plaintiffs' attorneys, was quoted as saying.
However, Costner's attorney has denied the allegations, saying he "always wants to make sure that everyone is comfortable working on his films and takes safety on set very seriously".
Costner's attorney, Marty Singer, said that the scene was explained to LaBella, and after a rehearsal, she gave a "thumbs up" to her stunt coordinator, indicating her willingness to film the scene "if needed".
That evening, according to Singer, LaBella had dinner with the stunt coordinators and was reportedly in "good spirits" and made "no complaints to them".
The suit also states that following the incident, Devyn LaBella allegedly went into therapy to deal with the after-effects of the traumatic experience.
In Costner's defence, Singer also produced a text message that LaBella allegedly sent to the stunt coordinator upon completing the shoot.
It stated, "Thank you for these wonderful weeks! I so appreciate you! I learned so much and thank you again. I'm really happy it worked out the way it did. Have a great rest of the shoot and yes, talk soon!" as quoted by Variety.
According to the complaint, LaBella was not hired back for Horizon 3, and has not been hired on any of the coordinator's other projects, though she worked for him regularly beforehand.

Sean Combs, Harvey Weinstein accused of sexual assault by same woman

Sean 'Diddy' Combs and Harvey Weinstein have been accused of sexual assault by the same woman. Crystal McKinney, who filed a lawsuit against Combs in May 2024, accusing him of intoxicating and sexually assaulting her, has now been named in an amended May 30 complaint, which was initially filed in February 2025, against disgraced film producer Weinstein, 73. The complaint, which is unrelated to Diddy's lawsuit, alleged that Weinstein assaulted McKinney and a friend in a Manhattan hotel room in 2003. According to the complaint, McKinney claims she received a call from an unnamed modelling company executive telling her that he had set up a business meeting between her and Weinstein at a popular West Village lounge in the evening. McKinney said she brought along a fellow modelling friend and roommate to see if he would "consider her as well for an acting role," reported People. According to the complaint, they arrived at the lounge and waited for the film mogul to arrive before being ushered to his table. McKinney then claimed that Weinstein "repeatedly told them that he wanted to get to know both of them better, so he could see their 'real selves' " and suggested that they move the meeting to "discuss potential acting roles" to his place since the lounge was "too loud and crowded," as per the outlet. However, once they got back to the hotel room, McKinney alleges in the complaint that the film producer "plied" them with beverages, ordering several bottles. McKinney claimed that she was "disgusted but too frightened to voice her opposition" and had been heavily "intoxicated" at the time. In the filing, she claimed that Weinstein's assistant then called the hotel room, and McKinney informed her of what took place. However, instead of "addressing" her complaints, the assistant allegedly told her to "leave the hotel room immediately," reported People. McKinney said she experienced "depression, anxiety, anger, self-blame, suicidal ideation, body image issues and demoralisation." Weinstein was convicted in New York State for rape and sexual assault in 2020 and subsequently sentenced to 23 years in prison. However, his convictions were overturned in April 2024 after the New York Court of Appeals ruled he didn't receive a fair trial because women uninvolved in the charges were allowed to testify, as per the outlet. In January, Weinstein begged a New York judge to move up his retrial date, claiming that he was in poor health and didn't know "how much longer" he could "hold on." He is serving jail time on Rikers Island due to his 2022 convictions for sex crimes charges in California. As for Combs, he is on trial for sex trafficking and racketeering charges, for which he has pleaded not guilty.

Jackie Chan didn't need any training for 'Karate Kid: Legends'

Actor and filmmaker Jackie Chan returns as Han in 'Karate Kid: Legends', the latest instalment in the film franchise. Chan, who first joined the franchise in the 2010 Karate Kid, starring Jaden Smith, said he didn't need any training for this new entry. The 71-year-old added, "I don't need to anymore. I've been training every day for 64 years. I've been fighting, fighting, fighting." The film, according to a press note by the team of Karate Kid, follows kung fu prodigy Li Fong as he adjusts to life in a new school, forges unexpected bonds, and is drawn into an intense showdown with a local karate champion. Under the guidance of his teacher, Han (Chan) and the legendary Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), Fong embarks on a transformative journey of self-discovery, courage, and growth. "I feel like this film understands a really specific and fundamental difference between Hong Kong martial arts, which is all about the choreography and the moves, and American martial arts, where it's all about basically punching," director Jonathan Entwistle was quoted as saying by Variety. Chan has been acting since the 1960s and is a legend of fight choreography. He performs all of his stunts Karate Kid: Legends. But he's slowed down with age. Chan shared, "I'm not liked I used to be when I was 20, and could do a triple kick in the sky. Now, I do one kick." But, it's still all him. Chan shared the valuable advice he has given to Wang. "I said, 'Ben, we do have a double for you, but you should do your own thing. The audience respects you more. When you use a double, you become lazy.'" In contrast, the 25-year-old Wang had a stricter training programme. While much of Fong's journey is about building confidence in his moves, Wang shared that he spent a month and half before shooting even began working with the stunt team. "We kept going. It was five days of formal training, from morning to night, and then, I trained by myself on the weekend," as per the outlet. Wang says the team had 90 days to get him to the point when he could "look okay doing a fight scene with Jackie Chan." Wang shared, "When Jackie showed up, he was nothing but helpful." What does Chan think of Wang? Chan shared, "He's like my young Jackie Chan," reported Variety.

FBI investigating 'targeted terror attack' in Colorado after six injured at rally for hostages

Six people were injured and some may have been set on fire on Sunday at an outdoor mall in Boulder, Colorado, police said, with the FBI calling the incident a 'targeted terror attack'. The FBI identified the suspect, who has been taken into custody, as 45-year-old Mohamed Sabry Soliman, but provided no further details about him. The attack took place at the Pearl Street Mall, where a group of people had gathered to call for the release of hostages in Gaza. Police received calls saying a person there had a weapon and had been trying to set people on fire. 'This attack happened at a regularly scheduled weekly peaceful event,' FBI agent Mark Michalek told reporters. 'Witnesses are reporting that the subject used a makeshift flame-thrower and threw an incendiary into the crowd,' he said, adding that 'the suspect was heard to yell: 'Free Palestine.'' Witnesses at the scene told CBS 's Colorado affiliate that the attacker had thrown Molotov cocktails at people in the area. Several victims who reportedly had signs of burns had been taken to hospital, with some of the injuries believed to be life-threatening, police said. The suspected attacker was also taken to hospital, with minor injuries, law enforcement said. 'We are aware of and fully investigating a targeted terror attack in Boulder, Colorado,' FBI director Kash Patel posted on social media. 'Our agents and local law enforcement are on the scene already, and we will share updates as more information becomes available.' Deputy FBI director Dan Bongino said on X: 'This act of terror is being investigated as an act of ideologically motivated violence based on the early information, the evidence and witness accounts.' Law enforcement said that a man was taken into custody in the assault. The White House deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller, posted on X that the man was a foreign national who 'illegally overstayed [his] visa.' The attack is believed to have been directed at a Run for their Lives event, sponsored by Denver-based non-profit group Jewishcolorado. The recurring event focuses on raising awareness of the hostages still being held in Gaza. In a video circulating on social media, a shirtless man waving two bottles filled with liquid can be seen near the site of the attack. He repeatedly shouts 'how many children have you killed' and 'end Zionists' as people attend to the injured lying on the ground near by. People can be heard reporting the attacker's alleged actions to police. Photos accompanying the social media posts show the man being detained by police. Boulder Police Chief Steve Redfearn told reporters that it was too early to discuss a motive but that witnesses were being interviewed, adding that local authorities were not calling it a terrorist attack at this time. Colorado attorney general Philip Weiser said that the attack appears to have been a hate crime, given the group that was the focus. Several blocks of the mall area were evacuated, police said. Governor Jared Polis said in a statement that he was 'closely monitoring' the situation, adding that 'hate-filled acts of any kind are unacceptable'. The Boulder attack occurred as law enforcement authorities in the US struggle with a sharp rise in anti-Semitic violence. It comes about a week after a man who was arrested on charges in the fatal shooting of two Israeli embassy staff members shouted 'free Palestine' as he was led away by police.
