MCDCC bank elections: Filing of nomination ends
Mysuru: The filing of nomination papers for the elections to the board of directors of the Mysuru-Chamarajanagar District Central Cooperative bank (MCDCC) concluded on Wednesday.
As polls to elect 17 directors for MCDCC were scheduled to take place on June 26, the last day saw a big rush for the filing of nominations at the office of the deputy commissioner in Siddharth Nagar.
The district administration office witnessed a flurry of activities with the candidates accompanied by their party workers and supporters, even though the elections to these posts were held non-political, without any respective party symbols.
MLAs GD Harish Gowda (Hunsur-JD(S), Anil Chikkamadu (HD Kote-Congress), former MLA Sunitha Veerappagowda, who is a Congress functionary, and several other bigwigs in cooperatives filed their nominations. Even former minister and Chamarajanagar MLA C Puttarangashetty, MLA HM Ganeshprasad, former MLA R Narendra, and others also filed nominations for the election.
All the three political parties have taken these elections as a prestige issue to take control of this cooperative bank that has an annual business turnover of Rs 2,500 crore and plays a crucial role in agriculture financing in the twin districts of Mysuru and Chamarajanagar.

Speaking to reporters after filing nomination papers, Harish Gowda, the outgoing president, exuded confidence about his win in the polls as cooperatives of the twin districts have kept a lot of faith in him and supported his candidature beyond political affiliations.
He said that he worked hard to strengthen the MCDCC bank and took deposit amounts to Rs 1,000 crore from Rs 370 crore. The state govt is holding the elections after a one-year delay following directions from the high court, he said.

Bengaluru: Ride-hailing platform Ola implemented a zero-commission model across India, allowing over 1 million of its driver-partners to retain 100% of their fare earnings, with no limits on ride volumes or income. Under the new model, drivers will no longer be charged a percentage commission on each ride. Instead, they can opt for a fixed-fee subscription plan, such as a Rs 67 per day pass, offering them unlimited earnings without per-trip deductions. The company promoted the initiative through its new campaign, encouraging drivers to buy a 30-day pass for flat daily access. This marks a shift in how ride-hailing platforms structure earnings, moving from commission-based payouts to SaaS-like access fees. Ola claims it is the first and only ride-hailing platform in India to implement such a model nationwide. The company did not disclose details of any fixed subscription fee or charges drivers may pay to access the platform under the new structure. The announcement comes amid growing calls from driver groups across the country for more transparent and equitable earnings. Most aggregator platforms currently operate on commission-based models, typically charging drivers 20-30% of the fare per ride.

No big-ticket projects for the region, Nandi Hills cabinet meeting postponed
Bengaluru: The govt has postponed the much-anticipated cabinet meeting scheduled to be held at Nandi Hills on Thursday, allegedly due to the absence of significant projects to announce for Bengaluru Rural, Chikkaballapur, and Kolar districts. Instead, the cabinet will convene at the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, following regular protocol. Sources say a key reason behind the last-minute change in venue was lack of approval from the finance department for several proposed projects for the region. Only a limited number of items had been listed on the original agenda, including a Rs 36 crore proposal for a new lake in Chintamani taluk, rejuvenation of 45 lakes in Sidlaghatta and 119 in Chintamani taluks under HN Valley-II Stage, costing an estimated Rs 237 crore. The cabinet was also expected to deliberate on a proposal to rename Bagepalli town to Bagyanagar. "Finance department concurrence was not received for the proposed projects, so the meeting at Nandi Hills has been deferred," said an official from the chief minister's office. The postponement has sparked disappointment among locals and lawmakers who were hoping for long-term solutions to the region's persistent water problems. Congress legislators from the three districts, besides activists, urged the govt to bring meaningful projects to the table and address the region's critical needs. In a letter to chief secretary Shalini Rajneesh, the Shashwata Neeravari Horata Samiti — a local organization focused on irrigation and water issues — highlighted decades-long water scarcity in the area. The group had requested that the Nandi Hills cabinet meeting include discussions on phased water treatment under the KC and HN Valley projects, lake rejuvenation plans, and progress on the long-pending Yettinahole project. "We were ready to protest if our issues were not addressed at the meeting. Now it feels like the govt cancelled it because they had no concrete solutions to offer," said Reddy, a member of the Samiti. BJP MP from Chikkaballapur, K Sudhakar, also voiced his dissatisfaction over the cancellation. "I had high expectations for our region from this cabinet meeting," he said. "The govt must urgently fund the three-stage water treatment under the KC and HN Valley projects and allocate at least Rs 1,000 crore to accelerate the Yettinahole project." Meanwhile, Congress MLAs have reportedly pressed the govt to discuss additional regional development plans, including the proposed international flower market in Chikkaballapur, a water project for Bagepalli, and increased funding for road infrastructure. No new date has been announced for a cabinet session dedicated to the region, leaving many locals uncertain about when their long-standing issues will be addressed.
