Gerik bus crash: Cousin of actor Zoey Rahman among victims who died
PETALING JAYA: A cousin of actor and entrepreneur Zoey Rahman was among those killed in the tragic bus crash involving Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students on the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik, Perak, on Monday (June 9).
Zoey, or Mohd Hairey Azhar Abdul Rahman, told mStar.com.my he was shocked to receive the news that his cousin had passed away through a family WhatsApp group early in the morning.
He mentioned that Fakhrul was returning to UPSI in Tanjung Malim, Perak, from his hometown in Pasir Akar, Jerteh, Terengganu, after celebrating Hari Raya Aidiladha with family.
"At first, we didn't know if he was safe, just that 15 people had died. But a few minutes later, we got confirmation that he passed away at the scene," he told mStar.
Sharing about his relationship with the deceased, Zoey said they last met during Hari Raya Aidilfitri and said he was close to him and that he had a good character.
"I didn't go back to my home town for Aidiladha, and the last time we met was during Aidilfitri. I can describe him as a kind, quiet, and intelligent person," he added.
Zoey mentioned that Fakhrul's family had arrived at the hospital to claim the body but had not yet decided on the burial location.
"I hope the family remains strong in facing this trial. The body is still at the hospital for a post-mortem. I also hope the family of the deceased and other victims find the strength to endure this test.
"Accidents are unavoidable, but I hope actions are taken after this incident. Every festive season, there are always incidents involving heavy vehicles," he shared.
On Monday morning, 15 people were confirmed dead in the tragic accident involving a bus carrying UPSI students and a car.
The incident was reported to have occurred around 1am.

Perak Police Chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the bus was carrying 42 UPSI students, eight men and 32 women, aged between 21 and 23, all from the east coast. He said the bus, which was registered in Kedah, had been privately chartered by the students and the group departed from Jertih, Terengganu at 9 pm on Sunday and was en route to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak when the crash occurred at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB) in Banun, Gerik, early this morning. 'This tragic accident has resulted in 15 fatalities. All the bodies are currently awaiting post-mortem. Thirteen of the deceased have been sent to Raja Perempuan Bainun Hospital, while two others were taken to Gerik Hospital. 'Twenty-seven others – 23 women and four men – suffered injuries. The bus driver, aged 40, and his 54-year-old co-driver were also hurt in the incident,' Noor Hisam told a press conference at the Perak Police Contingent Headquarters today. Noor Hisam said that the driver and passengers of the MPV, namely a couple aged 37 and 36, as well as their six-year-old daughter and three-year-old son, were also injured and taken to Baling Hospital, Kedah, for treatment. 'Other than Baling Hospital, other injured victims were also taken to Gerik Hospital, Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital and Taiping Hospital,' he said. He said police could not release the official list of the victims yet as the post-mortem process is still ongoing. He said detailed investigations are also being done, including from the technical aspects, human negligence, and past criminal records, with cooperation from all relevant agencies, namely the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom) and the Malaysian Road Safety Research Institute (MIROS). 'The road where the accident occurred is winding and downhill (hilly)…It was dark and had no lights except for the area near Tasik Banding, but it is still too early to draw any conclusions. Family of four in MPV survive collision with UPSI bus; driver discharged, wife and kids still hospitalised
BALING, June 9 — A family of four that occupied the Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle involved in the deadly bus crash on the East-West Highway early this morning are currently being treated at Baling Hospital. The driver of the vehicle, Mohd Lutfi Radzi, 37, sustained only minor injuries and has been discharged, Berita Harian reported this afternoon. His wife, Nurul Ain Zakaria, 36, and their two children – six-year-old Nur Aisyah Nafishah and two-year-old Muhammad Ahsan Nafis – remain in hospital but are reported to be in stable condition. The collision occurred at about 1am near Tasik Banding in Gerik, Perak, and involved a chartered bus carrying Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students and the Perodua Alza, said to be travelling in the same direction. The UPSI students were returning to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, from Jertih, Terengganu when the collision happened. Fifteen UPSI students were killed in the incident, while seven others were seriously injured.
