Williamson spoilt for choice
On current form, Nathan Williamson appeared to have an excruciating call to make ahead of the Group Two Macca Lodge-Nevele R Stud Southern Oaks.
The Branxholme trainer-driver opted for the tried and true in Captains Mistress, who will clash with her exciting and unbeaten stablemate Utah Jazz in Southland's premier race for 3yr-old fillies at Ascot Park tomorrow.
Now that it has been made, Williamson will not lose any sleep if it turns out to be the wrong one.
"Obviously training both of them and both being raced by Mick Boots, I am going to be pretty stoked if one of them can beat the other and get the job done.
"I have gone with the proven filly at this stage in Captains Mistress.
"There is no doubting her class and I am really happy with where she is at.
"It is not to say Utah Jazz can't come out and beat her, because she is very progressive.
"But until she gets out there on Sunday, she's yet to prove herself in group company."
Captains Mistress (10) looks to have a slight draw advantage over Utah Jazz (7), who must start wide on the front row for driver Craig Ferguson.
"She's a good filly, but from the draw it could be a little bit tricky for her.
"It will be up to Craig, but I can see him having to slot back somewhere, because there looks to be a lot of speed inside her."
What Utah Jazz has clearly over her star stablemate is recent racing.
Captains Mistress has had just one recent start, whereas Utah Jazz has had three.
However, a lack of fitness is not something Williamson is expecting to be an issue for his favourite.
"She is very well in herself. She will improve with more racing but she is pretty well where she needs to be."
"If she doesn't have any bad luck and gets a reasonable enough run, I'd expect her to be hard to beat."
Williamson also starts a key contender in the group 2 Alabar Southern Supremacy Stakes Final in Always Dreaming.
The 3yr-old is similar to Captains Mistress in that he has had only one run leading into a major event.
Similarly, he does not think a lack of fitness will be an issue for his charge.
"He has sharpened up off his run last week."
"He has been one of those horses that if you throw in the deep end, he will swim.
"He came home, licked the bowl and his work has really sharpened up.
"The draw (10) is the only real issue for him, but I still expect him to be very competitive."
Williamson also starts Duchess Maria in the group 3 Entain Southern Classic.
The debutante looks a genuine winning threat following her strong recent trials.
Miraculous and Secret Agent Man are also among the trainer's powerful Diamonds Day lineup.

Williamson again declines central contract with New Zealand Cricket
Ex-captain Kane Williamson has again rejected a central contract with New Zealand Cricket and likely will miss the Black Caps two-Test tour to Zimbabwe next month. Williamson also decided not to accept a central contract last year, to leave himself free to play in Twenty20 and other leagues around the world. He instead signed a casual contract last year and still played in nine of New Zealand's 13 Tests in 2024, scoring more than 1,000 runs. Williamson was absent from the list of 20 contracted players released by New Zealand Cricket today, along with Devon Conway, Finn Allen, Tim Seifert and Lockie Ferguson who also are playing in T20 leagues overseas. He is expected again to sign a casual contract. Allrounders Muhammad Abbas and Zak Foulkes, wicketkeeper Mitch Hay and spinner Adi Ashok are contracted for the first time in the absence of Tim Southee, who has retired, Ish Sodhi, Ajaz Patel and Josh Clarkson. ADVERTISEMENT Williamson currently is playing for Middlesex in the English County Championship and T20 Blast and for the London Spirit in The Hundred. He is expected to have county commitments while New Zealand plays Zimbabwe in late July and early August. In a news conference in London last month, Williamson said that his future on a casual contract is 'just a work in progress and New Zealand Cricket have been great with working with that and I've been fortunate throughout". The 20 contracted players were ranked on domestic and international performances over the past year. 'The contracts with Mitch, Muhammad, Adi and Zak reflect the incredible talent coming through our system,' New Zealand Cricket chief executive Scott Weenink said. 'These players have shown they can compete at the highest level and their hunger to represent the Black Caps is exciting. We're thrilled to see this group drive our team forward.'

Kane Williamson unlikely for Black Caps' Zimbabwe tour
Former Black Caps captain Kane Williamson is unlikely to tour Zimbabwe for a two-test series starting in July, after opting out of a central contract for a second year running. However, he says he will continue to be available for the national team without being obliged to play, adding that he is still passionate about playing for his country. Williamson has arrived in London for a stint with Middlesex in the County Championship and the T20 Blast, and with London Spirit in The Hundred. He will be play in at least 10 T20 matches and five County Championship matches, through to September. Black Caps coach Gary Stead has indicated he doesn't expect Williamson to be available for the Zimbabwe tests — in Bulawayo, starting on July 30 and August 7, following seven T20 matches in Harare. In interviews on his arrival at Middlesex, Williamson has indicated that spending time his family with will be his priority outside of his cricket commitments. His wife Sarah, who is English, and their three children are with him in England. ADVERTISEMENT "It worked well last year, and obviously I'm in close conversations with New Zealand cricket, and the relationship is strong, but the landscape's changing really fast." he told The Guardian. The situation of not being on a central contract was still evolving for both parties, he said. "Yeah, we're still learning how to do it," he says. "The landscape keeps changing with the different challenges that we're presented with as cricketers. It's a work in progress. But New Zealand Cricket have been great to work with on it, I've been fortunate with that." Williamson opted out of some Black Caps series in the past year, including the tours of Bangladesh and India. The 34-year-old said he had done reflective thinking following the retirement from test cricket of India star Virat Kohli. The pair, Joe Root and Steve Smith were once dubbed the "Fab Four'' by the late Martin Crowe in an ESPN Cricinfo article. "My first thought was 'oh gosh, there's an end point'," Williamson said. "Because before that, you're on the journey, there's a pursuit there. And it's not connected to those other three, but we've all been playing at the same time, and we've all competed against each other for a long time and we all know each other pretty well. So then you do start to reflect a little bit. "I know Virat pretty well, we've chatted a lot over the years, but you do realise that we're not just cricketers as well, we're human beings and your life situation changes." ADVERTISEMENT

Delightful Peg flawless in Southern Oaks
Delightful Peg delivered a tight-knit crew a special thrill when showing her true worth to win the group 2 Macca Lodge-Nevele R Stud Southern Oaks. The Canterbury pacer had flown into a gallop when taking the passing lane in her last two starts leading into Southland's premier race for 3yr-old fillies. But when driver Matthew Williamson angled the Brad Mowbray-trained filly into exactly the same spot on Diamonds Day at Ascot Park yesterday, she delivered a powerful and professional victory. Williamson and Mowbray's association dates back to around the time they produced Deliskha to run fourth in the 2017 Southern Oaks Final, making the win special for them. "That would be one of my more special wins, just because Brad has been a great mate of mine and we have had a lot to do with each other," Williamson said. "It is just super to win a nice race for him." Delightful Peg's victory also gave Mowbray and his family a moment to treasure. The pacer is raced by the trainer alongside his mother-in-law Jenny Knight and wife, Melanie. "Mel does a lot at home. She is looking after the team while we are down here," Mowbray said. "Jenny is a great supporter of ours as you would expect, so it is great to be able to win a nice race for her." While she had made errors in her last two starts, some tinkering on the training track with Delightful Peg's gear by Mowbray proved crucial in getting the filly to her best on Diamonds Day. The trainer admitted it had been a process to get Delightful Peg to become a group 2 winner, but he had had faith in her ability. "She has been a project right the way through. We are just over the moon." "We have taken small steps. There have been setbacks but times like today make it worth it," Mowbray said. Williamson landed back-to-back Southern Oaks wins having won the race last year with Flying Ellie. The reinsman was denied another group race victory late when Duchess Maria downed Who's Ya Daddy to win the group three Entain Southern Classic on Diamonds Day. Williamson's brother Nathan produced the filly for a slick and professional win in her first start. Five Crown left a strong field with few excuses when clearing out to win the day's feature for 3yr-old colts and geldings. Driver Blair Orange burnt early with the Mark and Nathan Purdon-trained pacer, who still had plenty in reserve to race away to win the group 2 Alabar Southern Supremacy Stakes. Though the pacer looked in full control throughout, Orange admitted there were some nervous early moments in the sulky. "The one draw was always in the back of my mind that it wasn't ideal for him." "I would have loved 2 or 3. I asked him for an effort early and I nearly lost him around that first corner but he gathered himself up nicely and he was pretty strong to the line." Diamonds Day's Group One feature was taken out by the red-hot favourite Jumal. The pacer delivered a powerful front-running victory for trainer Steven Reid and driver Samantha Ottley.
