Gout Gout delivers another record run on European debut in Ostrava
Another record fell as Gout Gout announced himself on the senior international stage with a new national record of 20.02s over 200m at the Ostrava Golden Spike meet in the Czech Republic. Gout bettered his own Australian record in a field stacked with high-quality sprinters after chasing down Cuba's Reynier Mena over the final 20m to cross the line 0.17s ahead of his nearest rival. The 17-year-old's victory comes at the same meet where Usain Bolt also made his European debut at 17. 'I've felt stronger in training these last couple of months and I've felt good since I got to Europe last Thursday,' said Gout, who rose to joint sixth on the world Under-20 200m all-time list. 'I knew Mena would come hard at me the first 100 but I was confident I'd be close enough to come home strongly in the second part of the race, which is of course my stronger part. 'I felt calm but strong as I came off the turn and was confident I'd be strong enough to get the win. Another national record. Pretty happy with that, it's not a bad first up in Europe.' On a strong night for Australia, Cam Myers was also in record-breaking form, the 18-year-old bettering his own Australian Under-20 1500m mark by nearly three seconds. Myers finished fourth to move to third on the all-time Australian list, just 0.39s behind current record holder Ollie Hoare. 'My fastest races the last two years have been miles. It's a coincidence but it's really good to have a fast 1500m and I'm really pleased to get a PB and my first time under 3:30,' Myers said. 'All 1500s in Europe are loaded right now and a lot of good guys are getting on it. It's pretty good fun to be honest. My next race is in Eugene at the Prefontaine Mile. India coach provides update on Jasprit Bumrah availability against England: ‘We won't change it'
India coach Gautam Gambhir has revealed they will not divert from their strategy to play Jasprit Bumrah for only another two Tests, despite the rest of the bowling attack lacking a consistent cutting edge against England in the first Test. Ben Duckett 's 149 inspired England to an improbable chase of 371 to down India in the first of the five-match series, England's second highest successful pursuit ever. It was just seven runs off the target they reeled in against the same opponents at Edgbaston in 2022 at the outset of the Ben Stokes-Brendon McCullum era. 'We won't change the plans,' Gambhir said. 'To manage his [Bumrah's] workload is more important. Before he came on this tour, it was already decided he would play three Tests but let's see how his body turns out. 'We haven't decided which two other Test matches he's going to play. We absolutely have the bowling attack to take 20 wickets. We pick the squad on trust, not on hope. 'We have inexperienced bowlers but they will keep getting better. On day five we were in a position to win this Test match.' Duckett followed the likes of Ian Botham in 1981 and Stokes himself in 2019 into Headingley folklore with a titanic fourth-innings knock to underpin a five-wicket win and a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Jasprit Bumrah was wicketless and while India rallied to leave England 253 for four when Duckett and Harry Brook were out off successive balls, Joe Root's 53 not out and Jamie Smith's 44 not out got them home with 14 overs still available. While India will lick their wounds and look to regroup at Edgbaston for the second Test, starting next Wednesday, Stokes can feel vindicated after his decision to bowl first at the toss came under scrutiny. India racked up 359 for three in glorious batting conditions after the first day and were at one stage 430 for three – they were also 333 for four in the second innings – but England fought back both times. 'It's a good job Test cricket is played over five days,' Stokes said. 'You make a decision and you don't know what is going to happen. Both teams had a lot of luck go their way.' England's last visit also produced another nail-biting finale, with Chris Woakes and Mark Wood bringing the 2023 Ashes alive by getting Stokes' side home in pursuit of 251 with three wickets to spare. 'We've been pretty good at this ground for the last few years,' Stokes added. 'We've got some good memories here and it's one more to add. 'Everyone knows what cricket is about, it's about scoring more runs than the opposition. When you strip it all back, that's it. We try to keep everything simple and calm as we possible can. 'When you're chasing totals like that, how you are in the dressing room is very important.'

Gout Gout breaks another record as he stuns the athletics world in his first run in Europe
Gout Gout has come within a whisker of breaking the 20-second mark with a stunning run that set a new Australian record in the Czech Republic on Tuesday. The 17-year-old flew to a time of 20.02 seconds with no tailwind at the Ostrava Golden Spike meet, which was both his first professional meet and his European debut. That broke his own national record of 20.04 seconds, which he set in December last year as he shattered the mark set by Peter Norman at the 1968 Olympics. Up against the highest-quality field he has ever faced, with two of his competitors having broken the 20-second mark, the Aussie blitzed the last 20 metres to pull ahead of Cuban star Reynier Mena. 'Get some more races in me and it [the 20-second barrier] will drop for sure,' Gout said after the event. 'I feel good. New personal best, new national record in my first European race. 'I don't feel any pressure, because as soon as I step out on that track, it's must me by myself and what I've got to do - my favourite thing, and that's to run. 'So I just go out there and run and nothing stops me from doing that. 'I've felt stronger in training these last couple of months and I've felt good since I got to Europe last Thursday. World Athletics documented his run in a tweet labelling the effort a 'Dream European debut' and pointing out Gout pulled out the time in his first senior race abroad. Gout had previously run 19.84 in April, but that time came with an illegal tailwind. His 20.02 will only increase the comparisons between him and Usain Bolt, who ran 19.93 close to his 18th birthday. Gout does not turn 18 until December 29, and he clocked the new record at the same venue where Bolt made his European debut. Reynier finished second in a time of 20.19 with Britain's Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake third in 20.60. Gout's fellow Aussie Peter Bol also had a great meet, winning the 800m event and finishing just a hundredth of a second off his personal best. And another Australian teen, 18-year-old Cameron Myers, ran the race of his life to smash his own national 1500m record by almost three seconds to finish fourth in the event.
