Australia's two-time World Cup champion Glenn Maxwell retires from one-day international cricket
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Two-time World Cup champion Glenn Maxwell is retiring from one-day international cricket in a bid to play a role in Australia's push for a Twenty20 world title next year.
Cricket Australia confirmed Maxwell's decision Monday. The 36-year-old Maxwell played 149 ODIs for Australia in an enduring career that is memorable for his unbeaten double-century in the 2023 World Cup, his unconventional shot-making and his brilliant fielding.

Maxwell said the physical toll of the ODI game, which can take up to eight hours and be played on short turnarounds, was beginning to impact on his fielding ability and he didn't think he'd make it to the 2027 World Cup.
'I always said I wasn't going to hand my position over if I felt like I was still good enough to play. I didn't want to just hold on for a couple of series and almost play for selfish reasons," Maxwell said.
The Australian selectors 'are moving in such a clear direction,' he said, so the retirement confirmation "gives them the best look at what the lineup is leading into that next World Cup. I know how important that planning is.'
Australia's selection chairman George Bailey said Maxwell was one of the one-day game's most dynamic players and played a key role in two ODI World Cup titles. The shorter T20 format is still a good vehicle for Maxwell's rare talents.

'His level of natural talent and skill is remarkable. His energy in the field, under-rated ability with the ball and longevity has been superb," Bailey said. "What else stands out is his passion for and commitment to playing for Australia.
'Fortunately, he still has much to offer Australia in the T20 format."

The clip's voice narrator recounted the story as follows: Breaking news. The 2026 World Cup might be taken away from the United States, and it's all being blamed on President Trump. FIFA is now facing a massive logistical nightmare after receiving thousands of complaints from players, coaches and fans refusing to travel to the U.S. The reason? Trump's harsh immigration policies have sparked fear, tension and international backlash. Some athletes and staff say they're worried about being detained or deported, even with valid visas. Fans across the globe are calling the U.S. unsafe for hosting such a massive event like the World Cup. The situation has become so heated that several countries are now threatening to boycott the tournament if it stays in the U.S., something that goes completely against the unifying spirit of football. With the pressure mounting, FIFA is seriously considering moving the event to Mexico and Canada, seen as safer, more welcoming alternatives. Rather, this matter marked the latest chapter of users sharing false or unfounded rumors with the aid of artificial-intelligence (AI) tools. Snopes contacted FIFA's media relations representatives to inquire about the rumor's accuracy and will update this article with more information as it becomes available. The @raulneedshappiness user's TikTok video featured a label accessible to creators when uploading new content that read, "Creator labeled as AI-generated." The video resembled clips Snopes reviewed for previous stories that featured AI-generated elements. The video's illegible letters and words, as well as its shiny, cartoonish depictions of people, clearly signaled its AI origins. In order for humans to create such clips with AI, all they need to do is type a short text prompt to instruct a generative AI tool to produce what they would like to see. That AI tool then quickly handles all of the editing, scripting, visuals and voice narration, and provides a video file for download. The TikTok account @satire_now, which shares satirical content, published a video (archived) discussing part of the same rumor. According to a website that helps pin down the exact time a TikTok user uploaded a video (information not publicly displayed on the platform), the satirical video appeared almost 24 hours after the @raulneedshappiness account posted its AI-generated clip. In other words, as its owner confirmed in a private message to Snopes, @satire_now did not start the rumor. Further, Snopes didn't locate any indication of the rumor originating from a source describing its output as satire, as of this writing. The aforementioned lookups of search engines located some relevant news regarding Trump's policies and the 2026 World Cup, though again no reports confirmed the central claim about FIFA seriously considering moving U.S.-hosted games to Canada or Mexico. For example, in March, FIFA President Gianni Infantino met with Trump at the White House, with FIFA reporting Trump reaffirmed support for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and 2026 World Cup tournaments. On April 25, The Associated Press reported U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, a member of the Democratic Party in Oregon, asked the Trump administration to reconsider policies impacting travelers arriving in the U.S., including citing upcoming sporting events like the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. In early May, NBC News reported members of Trump's Cabinet warned World Cup visitors to the U.S. not to overstay their visas. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also cast the tournament as "an opportunity for the world to become a friendlier place," adding, "We will take care of their documentation and travel documents, and it will go smoothly. And we will make sure that they can come and enjoy and bring their families and friends and make memories together." On May 13, Politico (archived) reported the details of a letter (archived) the Human Rights Watch organization addressed to Infantino. The letter cited Human Rights Watch's "grave concerns" about Trump's immigration policies, and urged Infantino to be "prepared to reconsider the hosting decision" if the safety of fans and players couldn't be guaranteed. Other reports told of concerns about long visa appointment wait times, as well as European countries issuing travel advisories for the U.S. Two days later, on May 15, Reuters (archived) reported Infantino reassured that "the world is welcome in America," referencing the 2025 and 2026 tournaments. Bryce Harper homers in first at-bat in return to Phillies' lineup after 5 game absence
Associated Press TORONTO (AP) — With Bryce Harper back in the lineup, the Philadelphia Phillies got off to a booming start against the Toronto Blue Jays. Harper hit one of two Philadelphia home runs in a six-run first inning off right-hander Bowden Francis in Tuesday's series opener in Toronto. Harper was back in action after missing five games with a bruised right elbow. The Phillies went 1-4 without Harper and fell out of first place in the NL East. Harper followed a two-run home run by Trea Turner with a 394-foot blast, with both homers landing in Philadelphia's right field bullpen. It was Harper's first at-bat since he was hit by a 95 mph fastball from Atlanta Braves pitcher Spencer Strider during the first inning of a game last week. The home run was his ninth of the season. Harper's elbow, which underwent Tommy John surgery after the 2022 World Series, remains a sensitive area. In light of the injury, Harper wore a protective guard on his right elbow Tuesday. Alec Bohm had shifted from third base to first base to replace Harper. Edmundo Sosa had taken over at third. Bohm was back at third base against the Blue Jays. First-year manager Will Venable said he is planning to keep Robert out of the lineup on Tuesday and Wednesday against Detroit. Advertisement 'He'll be available, but not in the starting lineup, just to give (him) an opportunity to really dial in some of these adjustments without just feeling the pressure of having to go out there and perform,' Venable said. 'So he's in a good spot physically. And just want to give him a couple days here to lock in some of these adjustments.' The 27-year-old Robert is 1 for 20 with 10 strikeouts and three walks in his last seven games. He is batting a career-low .177 with five homers and 20 RBIs in 55 games this season. The last-place White Sox had lost seven of eight going into Tuesday night's game against the Tigers. Michael A. Taylor replaced Robert in center field. Venable said Robert responded positively to the idea of taking a couple days off. 'He agreed that it would be a good idea just to press pause on the games, just for a couple of days here.' Robert had a major league-high 21 steals going into Tuesday's action, and he also plays strong defense in center. But he hasn't been able to find his swing at the plate. An All-Star in 2023, Robert has been playing through some right knee soreness. But Venable said he doesn't think it has been limiting him in any way. 'There's some soreness, but I think that it's not more than any soreness that all these guys feel during the course of the summer and playing hard out there every day,' he said. He is 2-7 with a 4.66 ERA in 10 starts and two relief appearances this season. 'Got some imaging done and they're continuing to evaluate it,' Venable said.
