KESUMA Considers Certifying Sign Language Interpreters As Trainers
PUTRAJAYA, April 22 (Bernama) — The Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) will review the need to accredit sign language interpreters to enable them to serve as certified trainers, said Human Resources Minister Steven Sim.
He said the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp) would be tasked with issuing the certification to qualified individuals, including persons with disabilities, who are proficient in sign language.
"I recently met with the Malaysian Sign Language Interpreters Association. They highlighted several challenges faced by interpreters, such as work environment, protection, awareness, workers' rights and limited opportunities to become trainers.
"One of the key areas I agreed on was the importance of accrediting sign language interpreters as trainers.
'I am therefore proposing that we begin with HRD Corp by developing a system to certify sign language trainers, including those from the disabled community," he told reporters after KESUMA's monthly assembly and pre-launch of the 2025 National Labour Day Celebration today.
Sim added that such accreditation would also boost the confidence of both public and private sector agencies in engaging certified interpreters in their organisations.
'This is an industry or sector where sign language interpreters are frequently engaged or hired by both private companies and government agencies or departments to provide interpretation services,' he said.
He added that this initiative aligns with one of the key strategic missions under the 3K framework, welfare, skills, and impact, aimed at uplifting the dignity of workers in the country.
'It means that all workers, regardless of any physical limitations or other challenges, must be supported. We want to ensure that no one is left behind,' he said.

In a statement issued today after chairing the Special Coordination Meeting for National TVET Day 2025, the Deputy Prime Minister said the celebration brings together broad participation from various government agencies, TVET institutions, industries and the general public, aiming for a direct impact on human capital development and employment opportunities. The three-day event will begin tomorrow at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) in Ayer Keroh, and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to officially launch it on Thursday. 'The official launch on June 12 is expected to include several strategic announcements related to the agenda of strengthening national TVET. Key focus areas will include efforts to encourage wider participation of TVET graduates in high-impact entrepreneurship sectors, in line with current economic needs. 'This step is hoped to further strengthen TVET's role as a driver of growth in high-potential sectors,' said Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development. With the theme "TVET: The Career of Choice", he said the celebration symbolises the MADANI government's commitment to making TVET a core pillar of national development and reinforces its dedication to mainstreaming the skills pathway as part of the country's progressive, inclusive and sustainable Malaysia MADANI aspirations. He said the event will be implemented comprehensively and with high impact, featuring various inclusive, interactive and strategic activities aimed at bringing the public closer to the world of TVET. According to him, the National TVET Day 2025 celebration will consist of four main segments, including the TVET Convention Hub, TVET Job Fair, and TVET Challenge. 'The celebration is expected to take place in a positive atmosphere, with growing public interest in the skills pathway,' he said.

Malaysia commits to labour rights reforms, gig economy protections
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia is moving forward with bold and comprehensive labour reforms as it aims to further empower workers, strengthen unions and ensure equitable rights across all regions and sectors, including the gig economy, says Human Resources Minister Steven Sim. He said Malaysia's commitment to labour rights was unwavering and continued to evolve in line with international standards and global solidarity. "When I came last year, I represented Malaysia to ratify the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Convention C155 on Occupational Safety and Health. "I am proud to say that today, Malaysia has implemented over 100 improvements to our national Occupational Safety and Health legislation in line with ILO C155," he said in his address at the 113th Session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva, Switzerland. Sim said several key milestones Malaysia had achieved in the past year, including the removal of restrictive barriers to labour union formation, which is expected to double union membership nationwide. "Today, Malaysia has radically reduced previous government restrictions on setting up labour unions," he said. He also highlighted the harmonisation of labour standards across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak for the first time in two decades. "Today, we have synchronised these three labour standards, thus giving equal rights and protections to every worker in Malaysia regardless of gender, race, religion and region after 20 years of disparity," Sim said. The minister said social security benefits had been increased by 20 per cent, with coverage expanded to migrant workers and round-the-clock protection beyond work-related accidents. "Statutory minimum wage has increased by 13 per cent this year, while median monthly wage has increased by 11 per cent compared to when I came to this conference a year ago," he said, adding that national unemployment was at a 10-year low. Sim also brought with him the final draft of Malaysia's Gig Workers Bill, which he plans to table in parliament soon. "I look forward to tabling this historic legislation in the coming Malaysian Parliament. "I am confident the conversations we have here will strengthen Malaysia's resolve to put our country among the handful of jurisdictions in the world to have laws protecting workers in the gig economy," he said. Although Malaysia was a small economy, the well-being of workers was non-negotiable to the country, he said. Sim urged global labour stakeholders not to fall into a transactional mindset or adopt a zero-sum approach to international cooperation. "To insist on building more bridges towards peaceful collaborations, this is the only way forward," he said, adding that Covid-19 had underscored the interdependence of nations. He said workers in smaller nations would be vulnerable if global trade punished the protection of workers' well-being. Meanwhile, Sim reaffirmed Asean's commitment to solidarity, citing the recent Kuala Lumpur Declaration, which outlined a 20-year roadmap for close cooperation among member states. "Multilateral platforms such as the ILO need to do more to foster such solidarity," he said, welcoming the ILO's partnership with Malaysia and Asean to launch the Asean Year of Skills 2025. Syndicate using courier services to transport subsidised cooking oil busted
BUTTERWORTH: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has exposed a new tactic in misappropriating subsidised cooking oil packs using courier services following a raid on a warehouse in Kampung Sungai Puyu here today. Its Penang branch director S. Jegan said 14,380 packets of 1kg subsidised cooking oil packs were seized from the warehouse, along with a lorry and other documents, with a total value of RM204,500. "Preliminary investigations found that the wholesaler used courier services to send the packs in large quantities to an address in Perlis while the packs were brought to the courier warehouse in a lorry in deliveries of twice a month," he told reporters at a media conference at the location of the raid. A man, 60, who was the driver of the lorry was arrested after he failed to provide any license, permit or documents to conduct business, to store or use the controlled item. The case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961, he added. – Bernama
