Ahead of World Rescue Dog Day, CT NPO urges residents to adopt instead of buy
CAPE TOWN - With many Cape Town animal shelters at capacity, a local non-profit is urging residents to adopt rather than buy, ahead of World Rescue Dog Day next week.
The annual observance on 20 May carries the theme "Adopt, don't shop", aimed at curbing the number of animals left in shelters.
Non-profit, Run for the Dogs SA is leading the charge by hosting community runs that pair shelter dogs with volunteers, giving the animals exercise and exposure to potential adopters.
Founder Jessica Strydom said while shelters are overwhelmed, many people still turn to breeders.
"There are hundreds of shelters in Cape Town which are absolutely to the brim with dogs and yet people go to breeders to go and get a pure-bred dog for thousands of rands when there are thousands of animals in need of a home already."
Strydom said the organisation was also ramping up efforts with a sterilisation campaign, aiming to sterilise 100 dogs in just two days.
"Currently all donations that are made is going towards our sterilisation drive and next week, Saturday on the 24th of May, we are having a doggy high tea at the President Hotel in Sea Point and all proceeds from that event are going to the sterilisation drive."

Grief support will be available for KIPP students and staff this week, the Facebook post says. Multiple other young people were in the home during the incident, officials said. Detectives are investigating, but no criminal charges have been filed, the prosecutor's office said.

World Takes Notice of Japan's Volunteer-led Probation Model

In May, the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, meeting in Vienna, adopted international standard guidelines for reducing reoffending drafted at Japan's initiative. They are modeled on Japan's own Hogoshi-based system. For UN member states, the standard guidelines offer basic guidance when formulating legislative and administrative policies. They are expected to be officially adopted by the UN General Assembly by the end of 2025. As a result, the system and philosophy of the Hogoshi probation officers will be widely shared around the world. This development is evidence of the international recognition given to Japan's parole system. Japanese ministries should take the opportunity to build on this success and spread the Hogoshi system message in Japan and abroad. The impetus for the proposed standard came from the UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice held in Kyoto in March 2021. High rates of recidivism have become a common issue for many countries. As a result, attention has been drawn to Japan's system of public-private collaboration. Through the Hogoshi system, offenders released from prisons and juvenile detention centers are supported in their reintegration into society. In particular, participating countries highly praised Japan's Hogoshi probation officers — community volunteers who help former prisoners on parole find jobs. These volunteers also provide advice concerning their daily lives. Responding to this outpouring of interest, the Japanese government proposed the creation of guidelines for reducing reoffending. Japan also acted as a coordinator for opinions from various countries. Systems modeled on the Hogoshi volunteer probation officer system have already been introduced in the Philippines and Kenya. Beyond that, the Ministry of Justice plans to use their adoption as an opportunity to export the system to other countries. Here in Japan, not only are the Hogoshi volunteers aging, but there are not enough volunteers. As of January 2025, there were 46,000 Hogoshi, far below the full staffing level of 52,500. Furthermore, their average age was above 65, with more than 40% over 70. In 2024, a Ministry of Justice-led panel of experts issued a report on how to make the Hogoshi volunteer probation officer system sustainable. Among its recommendations was the introduction of a public recruitment system on a trial basis. That contrasts with the current Hogoshi hiring system, which relies on personal connections among probation officers. The report also calls for abolishing the upper age limit for new volunteers. In principle, those wishing to become a Hogoshi must be 66 years old or younger. However, the report's proposal fails to address the introduction of a remuneration system, which has been a focus of attention. The Ministry of Justice has stated that it will review the system every five years. Nonetheless, there is an urgent need to review these measures and secure human resources now. We hope that the UN guidelines will provide an opportunity to raise morale among Hogoshi and that the system will become a global model in both name and reality. Minister Satya Kumar distributes medals, prizes to students
VIJAYAWADA: Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav distributed medals and prizes to meritorious students under the SHINING STARS-2025 initiative at Tummalapalli Kalakshetram, Vijayawada on Monday. The programme recognised the outstanding academic achievements of SSC and Intermediate students from NTR District. Under the SSC Level, 131 students who secured more than 500 marks out of total 600 in the March 2025 exams were selected mandal-wise across OC, BC, SC, ST, and CWSN categories. The Minster attended as the chief guest and handed over the prizes and medals. At the Intermediate Level, 43 toppers from various streams (MPC, BiPC, CEC, MEC, HEC, Vocational) and social categories (OC, BC, SC, ST, Minority, PH) were felicitated. Each student received Rs 20,000 cash, a medal, and a merit certificate. NTR District proudly secured the 3rd rank in Andhra Pradesh, with 89 per cent results in 2nd year. NTR District Collector Dr G Lakshmisha, MLAs Gadde Rammohan Rao and Yarlagadda Venkat Rao and others participated in the programme and congratulated the young achievers. The Minister has congratulated the students and wished them a grand success in their future career to get laurels to the motherland.
