Tom Cruise plans to make movies 'into my 100s': 'I will never stop'

Yahoo22-05-2025

He may not be hanging off planes 40 years from now, but Tom Cruise is reassuring moviegoers he will never retire from acting.
Ahead of the release of his latest Mission: Impossible adventure, Cruise, 62, said he plans to act well past his 100th birthday.
Two years ago, while promoting Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Cruise told the Sydney Morning Herald that he was inspired by how Harrison Ford returned for a fifth outing as swashbuckling archeologist Indiana Jones in the Dial of Destiny.
'Harrison Ford is a legend, I hope to be still going, I've got 20 years to catch up with him,' Cruise said at the time. 'I hope to keep making Mission: Impossible films until I'm his age.'
But speaking this week to The Hollywood Reporter in New York City, Cruise revealed he has revised his timeline.
'I (previously) said I'm going to make movies into my 80s,' Cruise told the outlet at the film's premiere outside the Lincoln Center. 'Actually, I'm going to make them into my 100s.'
He continued by promising he doesn't have an off switch and he'll never exit the stage. 'I will never stop. I will never stop doing action, I will never stop doing drama, comedy films — I'm excited,' he continued.
In Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Cruise returns as Impossible Mission Force Agent Ethan Hunt for the eighth — and presumably — final time. In keeping with the nearly 30-year-old franchise's penchant to see its star performing death-defying onscreen stunts, Cruise hangs on for dear life as he hits zero G between the wings of a biplane as it flips and cavorts during a midair chase sequence that was shot in Africa.
Elsewhere in the new movie, Cruise pushes himself to the limits as he performs 'an underwater sequence unlike any other.'
Looking back on the series while speaking to Postmedia in 2023, Cruise credited the Mission: Impossible films for allowing him to realize the childhood dreams he had of becoming an actor.
'I always wanted to go make movies and travel the world. I wanted to be in other cultures, and not just visit,' he said. 'You get to know people by working with them … Every time there's always something new … That's what I love doing.'
During his Final Reckoning press tour, Entertainment Tonight asked Cruise if he was Hollywood's 'last movie star' and the Oscar-nominated actor downplayed the notion that there will be no one else like him.
'I don't want to be,' Cruise said. 'There's so many other talented actors out there and I want to see them crush it.'
Cruise namechecked Sinners star Michael B. Jordan and the vampire thriller's writer and director Ryan Coogler as two names he thinks are redefining what it means to be a 'star.' Since its release last month, Sinners has become one of the biggest original horror movies at the box office in years.
'I'm a huge fan of his,' Cruise said, heaping praise on Jordan. 'That film Sinners is amazing. We're going to make a movie together.'
In a separate interview with PEOPLE, Cruise continued to gush over Jordan, who helped expand the Rocky cinematic universe with his Creed film series and also appeared in Coogler's Black Panther movies.
'He's dedicated to his brand. I really respect him. Respect Coogler, I love that film. I love the films that they make. It's brilliant, you know, big cinema … I admire what they do and I love to see people do well in life,' Cruise said. 'That is a thing that I work very hard to do … Filmmakers, actors — people know my door's always open, so I'm very excited about what they're creating and it's always inspiring. It goes back and forth.'
Cruise has also found himself becoming an unintended popcorn crusader thanks to viral videos that have been shared to social media of him munching down on the movie snack.
In a video posted by user @seifwtf on X that has been viewed more than 4.8 million times, Cruise is seen eagerly tossing kernels into his mouth while at the British Film Institute earlier this month.
'I find that I like him even more now,' one person commented, while another added, 'I have got to change the way I eat popcorn.'
Cruise spoke about the video during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show this week when Darius Butler said he had 'never seen anybody eat popcorn like this.'
'Are you actually eating popcorn or are you full of s— right here, TC? I've got to know,' Butler asked.
'Man, I'm eating popcorn,' Cruise said with a laugh. 'They know when I'm going to these movies that I'm watching, I'm eating popcorn.'
Cruise, who chatted with theatre employees in New York while snacking, also told one audience that he eats two buckets of popcorn when he goes to the movies.
'I normally eat two big buckets myself during a movie,' he said.
Another viral video with almost 20 million views showed Cruise walking into a theatre and 'calling out a fan for finishing their popcorn before the movie starts.'
'You ate all your popcorn already,' Cruise quipped. 'You gotta go get some more.'
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is now playing in theatres.

19 Years Later, 'Final Reckoning' Retcons an Underrated 'Mission: Impossible' Sequel

Ethan Hunt's world-saving reign has finally come to a conclusion with Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (now in cinemas), which concludes the story established in 2023's Dead Reckoning and wraps up 29 years of franchise lore all at once. The Final Reckoning ties back to the seven previous Mission installments in a number of ways. Still, the most notable aspect is how it retcons a key aspect of J.J. Abrams's Mission: Impossible 3 (2006). Here's everything you need to know about how The Final Reckoning ties back to M:I Final Reckoning picks up several months after the events of Dead Reckoning. In the meantime, the nefarious artificial intelligence known as the Entity has grown exponentially in power, taking control of cyberspace and the entire world's nuclear arsenal. To destroy the Entity, Ethan must locate its source code, which is stored on the sunken Sevastopol submarine at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. "In Dead Reckoning, you got the sense that the whole thing that made the Entity scary was that it could manipulate information, and basically erase truth," our review noted. "But in The Final Reckoning, it's just a mad computer program with the keys to all the nukes on planet Earth."M:I 3 found Ethan Hunt pursuing ruthless arms dealer Owen Davian (Phillip Seymour Hoffman), who possessed a device known as 'the Rabbit's Foot,' an unspecified piece of technology which threatened to bring an end to mankind. After Davian is captured and subsequently freed, he kidnaps Ethan's wife, Julia (Michelle Monaghan). Ethan then delivers the Rabbit's Foot to Davian to secure Julia's release. It's revealed that IMF Director of Operations John Musgrave (Billy Crudup) was working with Davian to secure the Rabbit's Foot so that the IMF would have cause to attack Middle East countries in a bid to 'stop the terrorists overseas and spread democracy,' a particularly 2006 The Final Reckoning's marathon 24-minute cold open, Ethan and Grace (Hayley Atwell) are kidnapped by arch villain Gabriel (Esai Morales), who holds them hostage and monologues his evil motivation. In Dead Reckoning, Gabriel acted as the Entity's human emissary. But in the intervening months, the Entity has decided it doesn't need Gabriel's help to take over the world. Gabriel explains that the Rabbit's Foot was the core module which 'contained a malicious code' --or 'a primordial digital ooze,' if you will--which was used to build The Entity, 'a weapon that the West never could have made on its own.' Davian had previously wanted to harness the power of the code within the Rabbit's Foot, similar to Gabriel's role in Dead Reckoning as the Entity's human emissary. In the ensuing years, as The Entity became more self-aware, it realized it could dominate the world of its own accord and didn't need any puny humans. There was only one thing that could plausibly stop the Entity from achieving its goals: the Rabbit's Foot, then located on the Sevastopol submarine. So the Entity sank the Sevastopol, dooming its source code to a watery the events of M:I 3, the Rabbit's Foot was confiscated by the U.S. government, where it quickly fell into the hands of Director of National Intelligence Denlinger (Cary Elwes), whom Gabriel killed on the train car in Dead Reckoning. Denlinger hoped to use the Rabbit's Foot to eliminate foreign technology deemed a threat to the U.S. When he deployed its use on the Sevastopol, circa 2012, the Rabbit's Foot gained sentience and birthed the Entity. It then sank the Sevastopol. In the ensuing decade, the Entity operated covertly, gaining intelligence from world governments and taking full advantage of its human mouthpieces, greedy also-rans like Davian and Gabriel who hoped to harvest its power but were no match for the Entity the most interesting and least dwelt-upon detail in The Final Reckoning is that Ethan helped to create the Entity by giving Davian the Rabbit's Foot in exchange for Julia's life at the end of M:I 3. In the cold open, Gabriel tells Ethan and Grace that it was clear Julia was Ethan's only weakness, and his eagerness to see Julia freed resulted in his handing over to Davian. After Ethan killed Davian, he returned the device to the IMF, where Delinger got his hands on Impossible 3 never stated outright what the Entity was, but the implication was that it was a weapon of mass destruction. At one point in that film, Benji (Simon Pegg) refers to it as an 'anti-god.' But considering The Final Reckoning's reveal, the only way to make sense of M:I 3 would be to assume the characters themselves didn't know what the Rabbit's Foot was at the time. Abrams's 2006 sequel would suggest the characters were smarter than the audience, with no need to explain the central MacGuffin as it's so incredibly obvious to everyone at the IMF. But if that were the case, why didn't Davian's possession of the Rabbit's Foot raise more governmental alarms? Similarly, how did Denlinger's covert use of the device go undetected for so long? It's a pretty silly plot device, one which undermines the proficiency of the IMF and Ethan Hunt himself, but it goes to show no one saw the possibilities of AI back in 2006.19 Years Later, 'Final Reckoning' Retcons an Underrated 'Mission: Impossible' Sequel first appeared on Men's Journal on May 24, 2025

Lilo & Stitch Quietly Passed A Box Office Milestone That Previously Went To Sinners

We're slightly less than halfway through the 2025 movie schedule, and some wild times have already been had at the box office. A pair of Marvel movies failed to make their usual explosive debut, and instead, one of the biggest movies of the year has been Sinners, an original film not connected to any franchise. The film had previously been the second highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office, but Disney's Lilo & Stitch remake has now taken that honor. At over $267 million at the domestic box office, Sinners had been the number two movie of 2025. Lilo & Stitch now sits at nearly $285 million. It's going to take some doing for Disney's little blue troublemaker to become the highest-grossing movie of the year, however. A Minecraft Movie currently sits atop the box office at $423 million. With numerous major blockbusters set to come out over the next couple of months, it's quite likely that Sinners will continue to slide down the box office chart. Still, wherever it happens to end up, its achievement cannot be overstated. Franchise filmmaking had already been the focus of studios back when more people still went to theaters, and in an era where getting people to do that is becoming increasingly difficult, audiences aren't leaving the house to see anything other than familiar franchises. To be fair, the fact that it took Lilo & Stitch as long as it did to overtake Sinners at the box office is a testament to the film's popularity and staying power. Stitch had an opening weekend that was three times that of Sinners. Sinners, however, had virtually no drop in its box office take between its first two weekends, a nearly unheard of statistic. Lilo & Stitch saw a nearly 60% drop between its first two weekends, which is fairly standard for major tentpole releases. If Lilo & Stitch means anything in the broader box office landscape, it's that despite the overall failure of Snow White, live-action remakes of popular animated films are still popular with fans. Lilo & Stitch is in the upper tier of the box office results for those films, only behind movies that grossed a billion dollars worldwide, like Aladdin, Alice in Wonderland, and The Lion King. Lilo & Stitch seems unlikely to reach quite those heights; it's broken $600 million and the global box office, but with the movie having been released in all countries, save Japan, where it will open this weekend, it has certainly made most of the money it's going to make. The major thing that may stop the momentum of Lilo & Stitch may, ironically, be another family-friendly live-action remake of a popular animated film. How to Train Your Dragon is set to hit theaters next weekend.
