Arts and community projects receive cash boost

Yahoo23-05-2025

Three projects that missed out on Levelling Up funds in Worcester are to get a financial boost.
Comer Gardens Community Centre, the Swan Theatre and plans for a Worcester music bus will all benefit.
Worcester City Council was awarded a £178,000 capital grant from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund in December 2024.
Councillors held off allocating money until the outcome of Worcester's bid for government funding was known. The city was due to get £5m but ended up with £2.3m and some projects missed out on funds.
"Unfortunately we were not successful in a number of project allocations with government," managing director David Blake told the council's policy and resources committee on Tuesday.
He said the council was successful with securing funds for the Scala project - an arts and entertainment venue in the city - and plans to revamp Angel Place and the Corn Exchange.
Mr Blake said £42,000 would go towards refurbishment of Comer Gardens Institute, a project to which "the council has already committed £140,000".
The Swan Theatre will get £50,000 towards installation of a lift to improve accessibility, and £80,000 has been allocated to a music bus.
The music bus was described as "a travelling music facility to widen participation and learning amongst young people across the city".
Councillor Karen Holmes said it was "lovely" that the theatre would be accessible to all, and councillor Pat Agar said it was "excellent news" the council could return to some projects.
Council leader Lynn Denham said she was "particularly chuffed" about money for the mobile music hub and added that it would help increase skills in more deprived areas.
This news was gathered by the Local Democracy Reporting Service, which covers councils and other public service organisations.

Taylor Swift And Blake Lively Friendship Update In June

There's a new update on Taylor Swift and Blake Lively's friendship amidst Blake's ongoing legal woes with Justin Baldoni. In December, Blake sued Justin, her co-star and director on It Ends with Us, claiming he sexually harassed her on set. In addition to denying the claims, Justin launched a countersuit against Blake, alleging defamation, civil extortion, and false light invasion of privacy. Taylor was roped into the drama in May when Justin's legal team subpoenaed her, arguing that Blake had used "her megacelebrity friend to pressure [Justin]" into making changes on the film. A rep for Taylor immediately denied their claims. "Taylor Swift never set foot on the set of this movie," her spokesperson said. "She was not involved in any casting or creative decisions, she did not score the film, she never saw an edit or made any notes on the film, she did not even see It Ends With Us until weeks after its public release, and was traveling around the globe during 2023 and 2024 headlining the biggest tour in history." According to the rep, Taylor had only agreed to license her song "My Tears Ricochet" for use in the trailer and one scene. "Given that her involvement was licensing a song for the film, which 19 other artists also did, this document subpoena is designed to use Taylor Swift's name to draw public interest by creating tabloid clickbait instead of focusing on the facts of the case." Still, the drama continued when Justin's lawyers wrote a letter to a judge claiming that Blake had allegedly asked Taylor to delete their text messages and "that if Ms. Swift refused to do so, private text messages of a personal nature in Ms. Lively's possession would be released." Blake's lawyer called the claims "categorically false," and the next day, a judge struck the "improper" letter from the record. However, a source claimed that Blake and Taylor's friendship was still left "fractured" in the wake of it. "Their friendship has halted," a source purportedly close to Taylor told People last month. "Taylor wants no part in this drama," the source added, before clarifying it didn't mean they were "not no longer friends" — they were just "taking some space." Neither Taylor nor Blake addressed the report at the time, but now, almost a month on, a source has offered an update, telling People their friendship still "isn't the same." "[They] aren't as close and haven't been spending as much time together as they did in the past," the source said. However, they claimed Taylor and Blake are trying to get back "on good terms." I guess we'll see what happens. In the meantime, BuzzFeed has reached out to reps for Taylor, Blake, and Justin for comment on the latest report.

Blake Lively Gets Org Support Amid Justin Baldoni Trial

A spokesperson for Blake Lively issued a statement as the number of organizations submitting amicus briefs in support of her amid her legal battle with Justin Baldoni hit 19. In December, Blake sued her It Ends With Us co-star and director, as well as the studio Wayfarer and other parties, alleging sexual harassment and retaliation. Justin subsequently sued Blake, alleging defamation and extortion, among other things. Both parties have denied the allegations of the other. Before we get into the update, you might be wondering what an amicus brief is. It stems from the Latin phrase "friend of the court," which allows people who aren't parties in the case to submit documents of support, arguing that the impact of the case will also affect them. So, why are all these orgs issuing amicus briefs? Let's take one that's been signed by 14 women's and anti-violence organizations. In it, they argue, "The retaliatory defamation lawsuit instigated by the Wayfarer parties against Blake Livelyis another example of 'DARVO' tactics (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender) in the post-#MeToo era where perpetrators of 'sexual violence,' in particular sexual harassment, attempt to silence their victims into submission." After a new brief was filed this week by Child USA, a nonprofit against child abuse, a spokesperson for Blake issued a statement to BuzzFeed that read, "19 leading survivors and organizations devoted to women's rights, children's rights and domestic violence have now signed onto four separate amicus briefs. All are united in opposing Justin Baldoni's attempt to dismantle a law designed to protect women who speak up—simply to protect himself." Justin's attorney has been reached for comment. "The latest briefs, filed by Child USA and Sanctuary for Families, add the voices of renowned nonprofits, victim advocates, and experts from around the world who are dedicated to safeguarding the rights and well-being of people who speak up," they continued. Justin has never been accused of child abuse. "Rather than defend his case on the facts, Baldoni is now contradicting years of his own public persona—abandoning the message of his #MeToo YouTube's, podcasts, TED Talks, and interviews, where he once upon a time urged men 'to listen to the women in your life…to hold their anguish and actually believe them, even if what they're saying is against you.' These women and organizations are sounding the alarm about his DARVO tactics, and the chilling effect they could have well beyond this case," the statement concluded. BuzzFeed has reached out to a representative for Justin for comment.

I'm a Real Estate Expert: These 3 Types of Apartments Are Easiest To Sell

If you've ever tried to sell an apartment, you know it's not always as simple as putting up a 'For Sale' sign and waiting for the offers to roll in. Some places fly off the market, while others linger for months with barely a nibble. Be Aware: Try This: So what gives? Certain types of apartments are much easier to sell than others — and if you're lucky enough to own one, you might have a major advantage. GOBankingRates spoke with Jeff Goodman, licensed real estate agent at Brown Harris Stevens, and Daniel Blake, real estate expert and manager at Clever Real Estate, to discuss the types of apartments that are easiest to sell. 'Buyers today want apartments that not only fit their budget but also fit their lifestyle — and that's where location, layout and building perks come into play,' said Goodman. Here are some other factors that come into play. According to Blake, the apartments that are most readily resold are typically one- or two-bedroom, clean apartments in the highest-demand neighborhoods in cities like New York, San Francisco or Chicago. These units attract a broad range of buyers — especially first-time homebuyers, young professionals and investors looking for rental income. 'For instance, in Manhattan, a recently upgraded one-bedroom below $800,000 in a neighborhood like the Upper East Side or Midtown will get several offers within days, provided its proximity to subway lines, supermarkets and greenbelt area,' Blake explained. Folks aren't only drawn by the price level but also by city convenience, as well as the potential for appreciation or rental return. Goodman agreed — because they offer both value and easy access to neighborhood essentials, he said these apartments appeal to everyone from new buyers to small families and long-term investors. Read Next: Spaces that allow buyers to easily customize or carve out work-from-home areas have become particularly attractive in the post-COVID-19 pandemic market, Goodman said. Additionally, buildings offering modern amenities like package rooms, fitness centers and bike storage create a competitive edge. On the flip side, listings with clunky floor plans, tired finishes or too many building rules tend to linger. 'Sellers who want to move their property quickly should focus on what today's buyers actually value — and set a price that aligns with current demand,' Goodman said. According to Blake, smaller apartments with lower monthly HOA fees — say, under $400 per month — and reasonable property taxes tend to appeal to buyers who are conscious of monthly carrying costs. He's seen many buyers pass on older units with high maintenance costs in favor of more efficient units in newer buildings, even if the square footage is slightly less. 'In Los Angeles or Miami, for instance, the first to be cut are the units below 1,000 square feet in newer developments with decent amenities and low costs,' he explained.
