AI pioneers who channeled ‘hedonistic' machines win computer science's top prize

Teaching machines in the way that animal trainers mold the behavior of dogs or horses has been an important method for developing artificial intelligence and one that was recognized Wednesday with the top computer science award.
Two pioneers in the field of reinforcement learning, Andrew Barto and Richard Sutton, are the winners of this year's A.M. Turing Award, the tech world's equivalent of the Nobel Prize.
Research that Barto, 76, and Sutton, 67, began in the late 1970s paved the way for some of the past decade's AI breakthroughs. At the heart of their work was channeling so-called 'hedonistic' machines that could continuously adapt their behavior in response to positive signals.
Reinforcement learning is what led a Google computer program to beat the world's best human players of the ancient Chinese board game Go in 2016 and 2017. It's also been a key technique in improving popular AI tools like ChatGPT, optimizing financial trading and helping a robotic hand solve a Rubik's Cube.
But Barto said the field was 'not fashionable' when he and his doctoral student, Sutton, began crafting their theories and algorithms at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
'We were kind of in the wilderness,' Barto said in an interview with The Associated Press. 'Which is why it's so gratifying to receive this award, to see this becoming more recognized as something relevant and interesting. In the early days, it was not.'
Google sponsors the annual $1 million prize, which was announced Wednesday by the Association for Computing Machinery.
Barto, now retired from the University of Massachusetts, and Sutton, a longtime professor at Canada's University of Alberta, aren't the first AI pioneers to win the award named after British mathematician, codebreaker and early AI thinker Alan Turing. But their research has directly sought to answer Turing's 1947 call for a machine that 'can learn from experience' — which Sutton describes as 'arguably the essential idea of reinforcement learning.'
In particular, they borrowed from ideas in psychology and neuroscience about the way that pleasure-seeking neurons respond to rewards or punishment. In one landmark paper published in the early 1980s, Barto and Sutton set their new approach on a specific task in a simulated world: balance a pole on a moving cart to keep it from falling. The two computer scientists later co-authored a widely used textbook on reinforcement learning.
'The tools they developed remain a central pillar of the AI boom and have rendered major advances, attracted legions of young researchers, and driven billions of dollars in investments,' said Google's chief scientist Jeff Dean in a written statement.
In a joint interview with the AP, Barto and Sutton didn't always agree on how to evaluate the risks of AI agents that are constantly seeking to improve themselves. They also distinguished their work from the branch of generative AI technology that is currently in fashion — the large language models behind chatbots made by OpenAI, Google and other tech giants that mimic human writing and other media.
'The big choice is, do you try to learn from people's data, or do you try to learn from an (AI) agent's own life and its own experience?' Sutton said.
Sutton has dismissed what he describes as overblown concerns about AI's threat to humanity, while Barto disagreed and said 'You have to be cognizant of potential unexpected consequences.'
Barto, retired for 14 years, describes himself as a Luddite, while Sutton is embracing a future he expects to have beings of greater intelligence than current humans — an idea sometimes known as posthumanism.
'People are machines. They're amazing, wonderful machines,' but they are also not the 'end product' and could work better, Sutton said.
'It's intrinsically a part of the AI enterprise,' Sutton said. 'We're trying to understand ourselves and, of course, to make things that can work even better. Maybe to become such things.'

Finally, even though these 'Water Lock' strings appeared in the Wear OS 6 Developer Preview, there's no guarantee the feature will show up in the stable update. By Alexander Cornwell ABU DHABI (Reuters) -A multi-billion dollar deal to build one of the world's largest data centre hubs in the United Arab Emirates with U.S. technology is far from being concluded due to persistent concerns around security, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. The U.S. and the wealthy Gulf state unveiled the massive artificial intelligence campus project set to contain a cluster of powerful data centres during President Donald Trump's two-day visit to Abu Dhabi last month. The planned 10-square-mile (26-sq-km) site is being funded by G42, an Emirati state-linked tech firm that is driving the development of its artificial intelligence industry. Technology giants Nvidia, OpenAI, Cisco, and Oracle, along with Japan's SoftBank, are working with G42 to build the first phase, known as Stargate UAE, set to go online in 2026. The project, which plans to use advanced Nvidia AI chips, has been promoted by Trump officials as a win in steering Gulf states toward U.S. technology over Chinese alternatives. But according to five sources briefed on the project, U.S. officials have yet to determine the security conditions to export the advanced chips or how the agreement with the Gulf state will be enforced, leaving the deal far from resolved. During Trump's visit, Abu Dhabi pledged to align its national security regulations with Washington, including safeguards to prevent the diversion of U.S.-origin technology. But U.S. officials remain cautious about the UAE's close relationship with China, four of the sources said, noting that the concerns are consistent with those raised during both the Biden administration and Trump's first term, primarily around the Gulf state's reliability as a strategic partner. The sources did not specify whether new evidence had emerged, but said existing concerns remain unresolved. During Trump's first term, the UAE and other Gulf states moved forward with deploying Huawei 5G technology despite U.S. objections. Others in the administration also doubt whether the UAE, despite its intentions, can prevent U.S. technology from reaching Washington's adversaries, four of the sources said. A White House spokesperson referred Reuters to the Commerce Department, which did not respond to a request for comment. Neither did the UAE government. Four sources said the U.S. administration had no clear timeline for finalising the deal. Abu Dhabi would need to accept yet-to-be-defined U.S. controls on the technology, but it could also request amendments that may delay final approval, they said. Two sources said U.S. controls would likely prohibit the use of Chinese technology and restrict the employment of Chinese nationals at the site that is being referred to as an AI campus. The administration remains committed to concluding the deal, four of the sources said, but noted there was opposition among Republicans and Democrats over concerns regarding the UAE's ties with China. Stargate UAE is scheduled to come online next year with an estimated 100,000 advanced Nvidia chips. The 1-gigawatt project will use Nvidia's Grace Blackwell GB300 systems, currently the most advanced AI server that Nvidia offers. Although smaller than the U.S. state of Maine, the UAE is a influential Middle Eastern player known for its strategic hedging that has seen it forge close ties with China and Russia. Last year, under pressure from the Biden administration, G42 ripped out Chinese hardware and sold its Chinese investments. In return, it gained better access to advanced American technology, while Microsoft acquired a $1.5 billion stake in G42. Nevertheless, major Chinese firms Huawei and Alibaba Cloud remain active in the Gulf state, and an organised AI chip smuggling ring to China has been tracked out of countries including the UAE. The Gulf state has also become a hub for companies evading sanctions imposed on Russia since 2022 over the war in Ukraine. The Trump administration has said that American companies would operate the Emirati-built data centres and offer "American-managed" cloud services throughout the region. The so-called AI campus in Abu Dhabi is supposed to eventually host 5 gigawatts worth of data centres.
