Lions captain Dan Sheehan's sports star girlfriend and his family's rugby careers

Lions captain Dan Sheehan's sports star girlfriend and his family's rugby careers Dan Sheehan has been named British and Irish Lions captain for their opening Tour game in Australia this weekend - and he will be supported by his girlfriend, Katherine Egan British and Irish Lions star Dan Sheehan will captain the team in their tour opener, and partner Katherine Egan will be cheering him on (Image: Dansheehan09/Instagram ) Dan Sheehan will captain the British and Irish Lions when they take on the Western Force in their tour opener. And his girlfriend, Katherine Egan, who's a promising athlete in her own right, will be cheering him on in Perth on Saturday. Lions skipper Maro Itoje will not be participating in Saturday's match as Sheehan, who captained Ireland for the first time against Wales in this year's Six Nations, will lead the team at Optus Stadium. The Leinster hooker is among five starters making their Lions debuts, with Ireland colleagues Garry Ringrose, James Lowe, Joe McCarthy and Josh van der Flier also on that list. ‌ Sione Tuipulotu and Tadhg Beirne are the only two survivors from the XV that lost to Argentina in Dublin last Friday. However, they have been reassigned to inside centre and blindside flanker, respectively. ‌ "Dan Sheehan gets the opportunity to lead the side against Western Force, which is a great honour for him and his family – so congratulations to Dan as he captains the side on his Lions debut," said Itoje, per the Irish Mirror. "We know the quality and experience the Force have and the opportunity to play against the Lions always brings out special performances from the Super Rugby sides, so we expect them to be at their best." Athlete girlfriend Off the field, Sheehan has been in a long-term relationship with fellow sportsperson Katherine. Egan is currently studying medicine at University College Dublin and also plays for the school's ladies' hockey team. Katherine first appeared on Dan's Instagram feed back in October 2017, when they attended his school's debutante ball. Over the years, they've travelled to beautiful destinations such as Bali, Indonesia and Santorini together. Katherine is often seen supporting Dan from the stands and is sure to pop up in Australia over the coming weeks. Family's rugby past Born in September 1998, Sheehan is now 26 and hails from a family of four siblings. He has one brother, Bobby, and two sisters, Emma and Susie, along with parents Sinead and Barry, who are often seen cheering him on from the stands at home and abroad. ‌ Originally from Dublin, Sheehan spent three years living in Romania due to his father's job relocation to Bucharest. Both he and brother Bobby attended the American International School where, despite rugby not being available, Dan kept active with football, softball and swimming. Rugby runs in the Sheehan family (Image: ©INPHO/Dan Sheridan ) Upon returning to Ireland, the brothers enrolled at Clongowes Wood College while their parents were working in Poland. Sheehan continued his education at Trinity College Dublin, where he pursued his passion for rugby. ‌ And it turns out rugby is something of a family affair. His dad, Barry, represented UCD during the 1980s and 1990s, and his grandfather Denis once played for Leinster. Rugby Career Sheehan signed his first professional contract with Leinster in June 2020 and made his debut in October that same year. He recently extended his contract with Leinster and the IRFU for another two years, which will keep him in the capital until at least 2027. His first appearance for Ireland was in a Six Nations match against Italy in February 2022. In the final match of that tournament, he scored a try and was named Player of the Match in Ireland's 26-5 victory over Scotland, securing Ireland's 12th Triple Crown. Article continues below During a showdown with England in March 2023, Sheehan's two tries secured the 2023 Six Nations title and Ireland's fourth Grand Slam. The following year, he suffered a serious ACL injury that sidelined him for six months before a triumphant return to the field in January 2025.

Today's rugby news as cult hero lands Welsh coaching job and North goes controversial with Lions call

Today's rugby news as cult hero lands Welsh coaching job and North goes controversial with Lions call These are the rugby stories making headlines on the morning of Saturday, June 28 Cardiff Rugby hero Rey Lee-Lo (Image: Huw Evans Picture Agency Ltd ) These are your headlines on the morning of Saturday, June 28 ‌ North predicts Lions series George North has predicted a Lions series win in Australia this summer but has "controversially" gone for the hosts to win the first of the three-Test series. ‌ Andy Farrell's men get their tour under way on Saturday, with a game against Western Force in Perth the curtain-raiser to a fascinating summer Down Under. A year ago this series was widely predicted to be a whitewash in favour of the tourists but a revival of sorts from the Wallabies during the autumn has seen those predictions revised somewhat. Most are still in the Lions camp but plenty are, like North, feeling that the hosts could be a lot hotter to handle than some may think. Article continues below "I was thinking about this," North told the BBC when asked for his prediction for 2025. "Controversially I'm going to go Australia win the first one, Lions win the second, and it goes down to the third and Lions win 2-1." North's own Lions story in Australia 12 years arguably made him a household name. From picking up and marching Israel Folau back to his brilliant second Test try, North will go down in Lions folklore. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby. "It's probably the Izzy Folau carry," he said when asked what Lions fans want to talk about when they meet him. "And then it gets on to the try and the excitement and drama the Test series brought. Going to the decider [in 2013] was incredibly special as a player, but as a fan it was also as incredible. ‌ "I never thought I'd be able to play for the Lions, playing for your country for me is the biggest honour anyone can award you and I never thought I'd be in the conversation to be a Lion, let alone tour two times. "But to then say you've had an impact that people remember, an iconic moment, it doesn't half put a smile on my face." Cardiff legend lands coaching role with Welsh club Cardiff legend Rey Lee-Lo has landed a coaching role at the Arms Park club following his retirement at the end of the season. ‌ Lee-Lo has been appointed as a transition coach and will also mentor some of the young centres at the club like rising Wales U20s stars Steffan Emanuel and Elijah Evans. The Samoa international hung up his boots at the end of the 2024/25 season after a decade in the Welsh capital having previously represented New Zealand Super Rugby outfit the Hurricanes. Lee-Lo is a cult hero at the Arms Park and is undoubtedly among the finest overseas players to have graced the Welsh game. ‌ The 38-year-old will coach Cardiff's next generation of players and Matt Sherratt will be hoping his influence will rub off on the likes of Emanuel, Evans, Osian Darwin-Lewis and even Mason Grady who is back in training after recovering from an ankle injury. Lee-Lo joins Sherratt, Corniel van Zyl (forwards), Gethin Jenkins (defence), Jonny Goodridge (attack) and Scott Andrews (assistant forwards coach) in the senior Cardiff coach team for the 2025/26 season. Darge: Gut punch to miss out on Lions Scotland star Rory Darge admits it felt like it was a "gut punch" to miss out on Lions selection this summer. ‌ Back-rower Darge will instead be preparing for a summer in the South Pacific, with games against the Maori All Blacks, Fiji and Samoa. The 25-year-old insists, however, that he would be ready to answer Andy Farrell's call should it come via an injury SOS. "Before the squad announcement, I wasn't particularly expecting to be there," admitted Darge. ‌ "Part of that might be you're protecting yourself a little bit for when you don't get announced. But I also just think my position is so competitive. "Even still, when the names are getting read out and you're watching it on TV, they are going in alphabetical order and it gets past your name, it does feel like a gut punch. "I was obviously delighted for the other boys who did get picked. But it's a weird mix of emotions. I've got a lot on my plate with Scotland at the moment and we're focusing on trying to get three wins from three. Article continues below "The Lions obviously aren't my main focus. But, yeah, if the call was to come, I would certainly be ready for it."

Evan Minto: Wales can cause upsets at U20 World Championship

The Welsh youngsters get their campaign under way against Argentina tomorrow (kick-off 7.30pm) and all five Rodney Parade prospects feature in Verona. New signing Harry Beddall captains the side from openside and is joined in the back row by Minto, Nick Thomas starts at lock and Harri Ford pulls the strings from fly-half, with tighthead Owain James on the bench. Abercarn's Jack Woods and Abergavenny-born Aidan Boschoff, both former Monmouth School pupils and now with Bath and Bristol respectively, line up at full-back and wing. Towering Thomas, who made three senior Dragons appearances last season, makes a first start since suffering a serious ankle injury against France in February. 'Nick has worked hard to get back from the injury he had in Six Nations,' said head coach Richard Whiffin, who brought the lock off the bench in the warm-up win against Italy. 'He offers a level of experience in the second row against what we know is going to be a formidable Argentina pack.' Wales face the young Pumas and then take on group favourites France on Friday before a clash with Spain. Whiffin's side head into the tournament buoyed by their Six Nations displays when they edged out Italy, stunned Ireland at Rodney Parade and then denied England a Grand Slam and the title with a remarkable performance at Cardiff Arms Park. INFLUENTIAL: Evan Minto on the charge for Wales U20s (Image: Mark Lewis/Huw Evans Agency) Minto, a firm fixture in the XV, believes their togetherness will be key in a tournament that will stretch the squad with five games in 20 days. 'We are just a side that works really hard for each other and we know that, on our day, we can put in a performance to beat anyone,' he said. 'We are a group that works hard for each other and doesn't give up and the atmosphere in the camp is really good. We have a laugh together but also know when to switch on. 'I don't think that spirit is something that can be coached into a team and it's almost that we clicked as soon as we came together. 'There are no cliques, we are willing to work hard for the player next to us and we help each other even when competition is strong for places.' Minto will lead the charge for Wales at the end of a hectic season. The 19-year-old from Griffithstown made three senior Dragons cameos and featured for the development side, played for Pontypool in Super Rugby Cymru, Hartpury in the English Championship plus started all five Six Nations games and the two warm-up fixtures. 'It's been a long season but really enjoyable,' he said. 'I have been playing for a full year but I've had a smile on my face no matter who I've been playing for or what the opposition is. I've learnt so much and that is what keeps driving me on.' Wales U20: Jack Woods (Bath, 2 caps); Elijah Evans (Cardiff, 7 caps), Osian Roberts (Sale, 3 caps), Steffan Emanuel (Cardiff, 10 caps), Aidan Boshoff (Bristol, 11 caps); Harri Ford (Dragons, 14 caps), Sion Davies (Cardiff, 4 caps); Ioan Emanuel (Bath, 8 caps), Harry Thomas (Scarlets, 15 caps), Sam Scott (Bristol, 15 caps), Kenzie Jenkins (Bristol, 5 caps), Nick Thomas (Dragons, 11 caps), Deian Gwynne (Gloucester, 4 caps), Harry Beddall (captain, Dragons, 11 caps), Evan Minto (Dragons, 5 caps). Replacements: Saul Hurley (Aberavon, 2 caps), Louie Trevett (Bristol, 5 caps), Owain James (Dragons, 3 caps), Dan Gemine (Ospreys, 4 caps), Caio James (Gloucester, 3 caps), Ellis Lewis (Neath, uncapped), Harri Wilde (Cardiff, 17 caps), Tom Bowen (Cardiff, 5 caps).
