This Pink and Orange Lake in the Australian Outback Only Appears Once in a Lifetime—and You Can See It Now
Most of the time, Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre isn't a lake at all—rather, it's a desolate expanse, flat, blindingly white, and silent. But every few years, after heavy rains swell distant rivers, the lake comes to life, bringing flora and fauna with it. Birds arrive in the thousands, wildflowers bloom, and travelers come to see the surreal pink-and-orange-colored lake that only forms once in a generation.
And that once-in-a-generation occurrence is happening right now.
Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre started filling in early May 2025 following record-breaking floods, making it the fourth time in 160 years that Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre is flowing with water. It is expected to be the most water the lake has seen in six years.
Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre is located within Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park in South Australia. It's the country's lowest geographical point and largest salt lake, and measures in at a mind-blowing 89 by 48 miles in size. When the lake's water levels are low or non-existent, it is a glittering crystallized salt pan that stretches for miles in all directions. But when it floods, as it is now, the lake becomes a breeding site for species that are tolerant of salty waters, such as waterbirds, fish, and shrimp. As the cherry on top, wildflowers also blanket the floodplains.
The most spectacular visual occurs as the water begins to evaporate and the lake turns a soft, pink-and-orange color caused by a pigment found within a specific type of salt-loving algae.
But seeing the pink waters of the once-in-a-lifetime Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre isn't easy. It is best to fly from Adelaide Airport (ADL) to Coober Pedy Airport (CPD). From there, there are two routes that lead to the park (you'll need a vehicle with four-wheel drive) and both take over five hours from Coober Pedy. Due to the rough and remote roads and harsh, arid conditions, it is best to book a tour. You can also see the pink hue of Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre from above by arranging a scenic flight tour.
The best time to visit Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park is between April and October (in Australia's winter), when there's more likely to be water in the lake, the weather is cooler, and wildlife are in abundance.
Before you make the journey to Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre, research the lake's current water level so you know what to expect. And if you plan to drive yourself into the park, check road conditions and closures before you leave.

This Airline Abruptly Shut Down Leaving Caribbean-bound Travelers Completely Stranded—What to Know
Travelers visiting the Caribbean should carefully review their upcoming travel plans. Regional airline Silver Airways, which operated local flights through the region, has abruptly shut down all operations. 'We regret to inform you that we are ceasing operations as of today, June 11, 2025,' the airline shared in an Instagram post directed to customers. For passengers who have a scheduled Silver Airways flight, the airline says they should not go to the airport, and credit card refunds will be processed directly to travel agencies and individual credit card holders. Silver Airways announced on Dec. 30, 2024 that it had "voluntarily filed for Chapter 11" bankruptcy protection, and said that all tickets would remain valid. During that process, the airline says it tried finding a buyer, but ultimately had to close. 'Silver entered into a transaction to sell its assets to another airline holding company, who unfortunately has determined to not continue Silver's flight operations in Florida, the Bahamas and the Caribbean,' the airline added in its post to customers. Travelers shared frustration, sharing they were unaware that Silver Airways was facing financial difficulties, and booked a ticket for an upcoming trip, even checking in for the flight successfully the evening before the shutdown. 'No email. No text,' the traveler shared in the social media thread on Reddit. 'I was very much one of those people who showed up at the airport and waited by the gate and realized that no one was there. Insane.' Other travelers shared previous frustration with the airline, saying they were stranded in the Bahamas. "Sad day," one traveler shared in a comment on the social media thread about the closure. "I feel bad for all the employees." The airline operated an extensive route network connecting Florida, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and other Caribbean islands. Frequent visitors to the area may be familiar with Seaborne Airlines, which Silver Airways acquired in 2018. For travelers facing a rebooking situation, many airlines service the route network that Silver maintained. For example, for travelers visiting St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands (STT), American Airlines, Cape Air, JetBlue, Spirit, and United Airlines provide flights to the island.

Kona airport runway to close overnight for construction
KONA, Hawaii (KHON2) — Runway 17-35 at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keāhole will be closed overnight from 10 p.m. until tomorrow at 6 a.m. as part of an ongoing runway rehabilitation project. The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation says the closure will allow crews to install updated lighting, apply new runway markings and continue extending the runway from its temporary 7,000-foot length back to its full 11,000 feet. Plane lands safely in Honolulu despite gear failure Since February, flights have continued operating on a reduced runway as construction progresses. The full-length runway is expected to return by Oct. 2, with the entire project running through April 2026. The work involves rehabilitating both asphalt and concrete surfaces to meet current FAA design standards. HDOT says it has coordinated with airlines to adjust flight times and minimize disruptions. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for updates. All work is weather permitting. HDOT appreciates travelers' patience as improvements are made to ensure KOA remains safe and reliable for years to come. For more on the project: Runway 17-35 Rehabilitation Project. Safari tour in Brainerd has 140 species of animals from all over the world
This Minnesota park features animals from all over the world This Minnesota park features animals from all over the world This Minnesota park features animals from all over the world At Safari North Wildlife Park in Brainerd, Minnesota, you can see animals from all around the world. Growing up in southern Minnesota, Kevin Vogel developed a love for animals by watching nature shows. Then, for 20 years, he and his family had a traveling zoo. But in 2014, they found a permanent home in Brainerd. "We started with 45 to 50 species here at the zoo, and now we've got well over 130, 140 different species of animals and birds here," said Vogel. There are lions, tigers and bears — even sloth bears from India. "They have big claws and when they climb trees it looks like a sloth hanging," said Vogel. There's also a flock of flamingoes, 41 Florida alligators, three new jaguar cubs and an anteater. She's the newest addition and she likes yogurt more than she likes ants. The tallest giraffe on site is Jigsaw. He's 10 years old and 15 feet tall, and he loves when people feed him. But what really sets this zoo apart is its safari. "It's about a 10-acre train ride. It lasts 15 to 18 minutes and it's fully narrated," said Vogel. This is a chance to get up close and personal with the wildlife. Many of the animals you find on this safari are native to Africa. But here you have to separate the hyenas from the zebras, or there could be problems. Kevin says most of what you discover, has come from other zoos. Even before an animal arrives, Safari North does research on how best to care for the new arrival and what they like to eat. Feed costs get expensive, but it's worth it. It's a chance for all ages to experience a big part of the animal kingdom, right here in Minnesota. "I just want them to really walk away with a very good experience and an appreciation for a love for nature and the animals we share it with," said Vogel. Safari North sits on a 43 acres site and its open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day from Mother's Day into October.
