Colm Tóibín teams up with Wexford Festival Opera for new work inspired by town's Main Street
Colm Tóibín, author of award-winning novels including The Master, Brooklyn, and Long Island, has collaborated with composer Andrew Synnott, marking the second time the Wexford-born writer has worked with the festival.
This new work, Urban Legends, will commence on October 19 and will be performed as late-night operas at 11pm in Green Acres Art Gallery in Wexford town. Each performance will last approximately 20 minutes.
This follows Mr Tóibín's and Alberto Caruso's collaboration for WFO 2024 with their Pocket Opera (Opera Beag) Lady Gregory: In America.
Libretto for this new work is by Mr Tóibín while music is by Mr Synnott, a long-time friend of the festival.
The work is inspired by the urban legend that if you walk from one end of Wexford's Main Street to the other end, you will pass the person you are going to marry.
Two young lovers set out from either end of the Main Street at noon and – according to legend – are destined to meet and get married. Both are single, both are in search of love. Will they meet? And if they do, will they fall for each other? Each night, we find out more clues of when and where – at what point on the street – they will finally meet and sing a love duet.
These three different short late-night operas explore this legend over three separate nights at Green Acres Gallery. Each 20-minute stand-alone performance will be presented twice during the festival and can be enjoyed individually or as part of the series.
Artistic Director Rosetta Cucchi said: 'I am so delighted that Colm Tóibín and Andrew Synnott have come together to create this special new work. This project began with an initial conversation that Colm and I had last year. Wexford Festival Opera is so intrinsically linked with Wexford town itself. Creating a work around one of the urban legends here seemed to fit so beautifully into the overall WFO theme this year of myths of legends and I can't wait to experience it myself during WFO 2025.'
Booking is now open at wexfordopera.com for the 74th Wexford Festival opera which explores the theme of Myths and Legends will run from October 17 to November 1.

Irish actor hits back at Conor McGregor following 'bottler' jibe
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Conor McGregor has found himself in a Twitter row with 'Game of Thrones' actor Liam Cunningham following the capture of an aid ship headed for Gaza. The yacht, which counts activist Greta Thunberg among its 12-person crew, was seized by Israeli forces early Monday morning and is currently being escorted to an Israeli port, as confirmed by officials. The boat, known as Madleen, is part of the pro-Palestinian Freedom Flotilla Coalition's efforts to deliver aid to Gaza and highlight the escalating humanitarian crisis there. Setting sail from Sicily just last week, Madleen had Cunningham in attendance at its send-off. Cunningham, the Dublin-born star, has been openly critical of the Irish Government's handling of the Gaza humanitarian situation, reports the Irish Mirror. Last week, he argued that the Irish Navy should be safeguarding the vessel carrying aid, claiming these charitable endeavours are stepping in where governments have not. Cunningham said: "They are doing the job that we are supposed to be doing, the people who are supposed to respect international law." He added: "There should be a flotilla of Irish naval vessels standing up for our international law and treating international law with the respect it deserves, not this wonderful, disparate group of people who have got together to put their lives in danger because they're not being backed up. "There should be a European force circling that boat to ensure that they get there, because that is their legal responsibility." (Image: Fabrizio Villa, Getty Images) The news that the flotilla had been stopped by Israeli forces in the early hours of Monday sparked outrage on social media, with the 64-year-old actor expressing his fury online. He wrote: "The Freedom flotilla was attacked during the night. The ship was rammed, boarded and the 12 volunteers kidnapped. This is more reprehensible behaviour from the genocidal regime in Tel Aviv." UFC star McGregor seemed to taunt Cunningham for not being part of the voyage himself, replying to the actor's post with a jibe. McGregor teased: "I thought you were on this boat Liamo, what happened? You forgot your goggles? You get sea sick off the gargle? Bottler." However, Cunningham didn't hold back in his response to McGregor, firing back with a sharp retort. Cunningham hit back at McGregor, saying: "Didn't know you could read and write Conor. Thought you used your hands to tap out." The Freedom Flotilla Coalition has stated that the activists aboard the Madleen were "kidnapped by Israeli forces" as they attempted to bring much-needed aid to the beleaguered area. "The ship was unlawfully boarded, its unarmed civilian crew abducted, and its life-saving cargo - including baby formula, food and medical supplies -confiscated," the coalition declared in a statement. Brooklyn Beckham delivers heartbreaking blow to dad David as feud hits new low
Brooklyn Beckham's ongoing spat with his parents, David and Victoria, has taken a turn for the worse. The couple's eldest son, who is currently estranged from them, found time to attend the birthday celebrations of Nicola Peltz's actor brother Will this weekend, despite having missed his father David's 50th birthday party last month. As the unfortunate rift within the Beckham family continues to deepen, Brooklyn was seen enjoying himself at his in-laws' gathering in Hollywood, accompanied by his wife Nicola. The bond between Brooklyn and 39 year old Will seems to be strengthening, with the aspiring chef even referring to him as 'bro' in a recent tribute. Rumours of a strained relationship between Victoria and David and their son and daughter-in-law first emerged following a disagreement over a wedding dress three years ago. Now, it's reported that LA-based Brooklyn and Nicola have completely severed ties. Brooklyn was notably absent from his father's 50th birthday celebrations and hasn't acknowledged any of his close family's recent birthdays. However, he had no qualms about attending Will's party, donning a black shirt and jeans for the occasion. Trying to maintain a low profile upon arrival, Brooklyn displayed his tattoos while covering his face, reports the Mirror. Friends believe that the recent breakup of his brother Romeo Beckham won't do anything to mend the fractured family dynamics. Nicola's mates previously pointed fingers at Romeo's girlfriend Kim Turnbull for their absence from David's 50th birthday bash. They suggested it was due to Brooklyn's fleeting romantic involvement with her, a claim refuted by the Beckham clan's friends. However, insiders reckon it would take a "small miracle at present" for peace to be restored between Brooklyn and his parents, David and Victoria. Sources close to Nicola have previously asserted that as "an outsider coming into the Beckham family, she has helped Brooklyn see the emotional abuse and toxic behaviour within". These allegations - labelled as "patently untrue and ludicrous" by pals of David and Victoria - were the final straw in any future relationship, insiders suggest. New magazine reports that Victoria is finding it hard to cope with the situation because 26 year old Brooklyn will "always be her baby". Another insider shared: "He's her first-born and they've always had a wonderful relationship, she feels like Nicola has taken over and it's really tough to deal with as a mother. "David is frustrated with Brooklyn's behaviour and is telling Victoria it's unacceptable, but she's just upset to feel like she's losing her first baby. She's very family-oriented so it's a worry that Brooklyn and Nicola will start their own family and Victoria won't have contact with her first grandchild – it's a devastating thought."
