New rail service from London to Scottish city coming next spring including first-ever direct trains to capital at three stations

A low-cost rail operator is set to launch a new train service between London and Stirling from next spring with passengers hoping to benefit from cheaper fares.
Lumo will operate the trains from Euston, calling at Milton Keynes, Nuneaton, Crewe, Preston, Carlisle, Lockerbie, Motherwell, Whifflet, Greenfaulds and Larbert.
Four daily return services will run on the full route from Monday to Saturday and three on Sundays, with an extra daily return service between Euston and Preston.
The route will also provide first-ever direct services to London for three stations - Whifflet, serving Coatbridge; Greenfaulds, serving Cumbernauld; and Larbert.
Transport giant FirstGroup said the planned new route can now go ahead after it secured a deal with rolling stock company Eversholt Rail for the use of five trains.
Stirling currently only has two direct daily trains serving London - one on London North Eastern Railway (LNER) in the day and another on Caledonian Sleeper at night.
The new Lumo trains will also provide competition for Avanti West Coast which runs trains between Euston and other Scottish cities such as Glasgow and Edinburgh.
FirstGroup's Lumo brand currently runs only on the East Coast Main Line between London King's Cross and Edinburgh, calling at Stevenage, Newcastle and Morpeth.
This route launched in 2021 with the aim of being a challenger to LNER, offering cheaper fares and an alternative to low-cost air travel between London and Scotland.
Zoe Adjey, senior lecturer in tourism and hospitality at the University of East London, said fares on the route will 'certainly be cheaper' when Lumo starts running.
As it stands, travelling from London to Stirling on the daily LNER service at 12pm - which takes five hours and 15 minutes - costs £97.50 for a super-off-peak single. Advance singles start at £34.40.
Ms Adjey told Metro: 'The service enhancement will significantly improve the passenger experience, especially compared to air travel.'
She added: 'Passengers will get city centre to city centre connectivity, eliminating lengthy airport transfers and security procedures.
'It's like choosing between Eurostar and flying when traveling to Paris or Brussels. The train offers greater convenience despite the longer journey time.'
She also said that the higher frequency of services will provide 'greater scheduling flexibility and reduced waiting times', and will help give those living in London and Scotland easier access for tourism.
The Independent 's travel correspondent Simon Calder wrote: 'Experience on the East Coast Main Line, where Lumo competes with LNER between London and Edinburgh, suggests fares will fall and some airline passengers will switch to rail as the market expands.'
He added: 'Besides serving passengers living or working on the line of route, the new link will increase journey possibilities to and from Perth, Aberdeen and Inverness, connecting with ScotRail services at Stirling.
'The portion of the journey linking London with Crewe, Preston and Carlisle could lead to lower fares on these core Avanti West Coast routes.'
Aberdeen-based FirstGroup holds track access rights from regulator the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) for the route on the West Coast Main Line until 2030.
Trains will be operated under FirstGroup's Lumo brand, which currently runs only on the East Coast Main Line between London King's Cross and Edinburgh Waverley, calling at Stevenage, Newcastle and Morpeth.
The existing daily LNER service between King's Cross and Stirling calls at York, Darlington, Newcastle, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Edinburgh Waverley, Edinburgh Haymarket and Falkirk Grahamston.
The new West Coast services were initially planned to start this year, but FirstGroup said they are 'currently expected to commence mid-2026 following the delivery of the trains and staff training'.
The company said the agreement with Eversholt Rail is for five Class 222 diesel trains, each with a capacity for about 340 standard-class seats.
It expects the services will achieve annual sales of about £50million and a 'low double-digit' operating profit margin.
The trains set to be used on the route are Class 222 Meridian units which were previously operated by East Midlands Railway and are being refurbished in a £50million deal with Alstom.
The contract includes a £10million fleet modernisation programme with Eversholt Rail, which will be carried out at Alstom's facility in Widnes, Cheshire.
Lumo is also awaiting regulatory approval from the ORR to further extend services to Glasgow.
The Government started the process of renationalising all remaining franchised train services last month when it brought South Western Railway into public ownership.
Lumo runs on a separate open access basis, meaning it sets its own fares, takes on all revenue risk and receives no taxpayer-funded subsidies.
In January, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander wrote to ORR chairman Declan Collier expressing concerns that the open access model can cause 'potential congestion' and result in taxpayers being 'left to fill shortfalls' in maintenance costs.
She stated it is her 'expectation' that 'the impacts on the taxpayer and on overall performance' are 'given primacy' by the regulator when it analyses proposals.
Martijn Gilbert, managing director of Lumo, added: 'Today's announcement underscores Lumo's commitment to growing Scotland's rail network, providing passengers with more affordable, fast, and convenient travel options.
'Our new service between Stirling and London has the potential to unlock significant economic opportunities for communities along the route, and we're proud to deliver this direct rail connectivity to towns previously overlooked by traditional rail services.
'We are focused on further expanding our services in Scotland to ensure even greater connectivity across the country and the whole UK.'
FirstGroup chief executive Graham Sutherland said: 'The mobilisation of our new service between London and Stirling is another important step towards rolling out Lumo as a nationwide operator and growing our open access capacity, a key priority for the group.
'Our investment and capabilities in open access rail have delivered reliable, value-for-money services, grown rail demand and helped to spur economic growth and connect communities. We look forward to doing the same on our new services.'
And Sue Webber MSP, Conservative transport spokesperson, said: 'Lumo is actively investing in our capital city – not only bringing in tourists but also supporting our vibrant hospitality and events sector. And this isn't just talk: we're looking at £740million in economic benefits from Lumo by 2032.
'Crucially, this is being delivered not by government mandate, but through private sector innovation and open access investment. That's why I believe this model is one we should be championing. Lumo is not replacing existing services – it's adding capacity, increasing choice, and growing the market for everyone.'
Stirling Council leader Gerry McGarvey added: 'We have been consistent in supporting this proposal so it's fantastic news that Lumo has confirmed it will be operating this route, which will boost Stirling's already excellent rail and transport connections to cities across the UK.
'Having four daily rail journeys between Stirling and London will support greater inward investment and business growth, including in key economic sectors such as tourism, as well as increasing travel opportunities for residents.'

Residents of a multistorey development in London have received £550,000 in compensation from a housing association for cladding defects in a case they hope will set a precedent for other claims. Notting Hill Genesis (NHG) and the contractor United Living have also completed large-scale works at their own cost to remedy the buildings in the Exchange development in Bermondsey, south London. After the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017 it emerged that thousands of buildings had similar combustible cladding and other fire risks. The Exchange development, consisting of five multistorey residential and mixed-use buildings, and constructed for NHG by United Living, had widespread fire safety defects, including aluminium composite material (ACM), combustible insulation and inadequate cavity barriers. In 2020, residents began a legal case to ensure the work was carried out to make the buildings safe and that they would not have to foot the bill. Kyle Taylor, 40, who works in civil society, said he and other Exchange residents had been shocked when they heard people in a nearby building had received bills of up to £40,000 for similar remedial works. 'It has been stressful,' he said. 'We're a mixed community so we have social tenants, private tenants, and first-time buyers through shared ownership. We're a building of teachers and nurses, key workers and young professionals. I know for myself and for a number of people those bills would not have been payable. 'We are pleased that NHG and United Living have at last done the right thing, but disappointed it took so long. We bought our homes in good faith and were devastated to discover they were not safe because of cost-cutting construction. 'We have had to live in unsafe homes for many years and are relieved that we can now start putting this behind us.' Taylor, who has lived in the development since it was completed in 2014, and has at times spent 40 hours a week on admin connected to the case, said he was pleased the terms of the settlement were not confidential. 'It was really important for me, from the perspective of public interest, that we could be an example for people that it is possible to win on the basis of truth and reality and what's correct and just, but also to inspire some [other] people to go for it.' The compensation will go to 76 leaseholders and independent freeholders and the terms of the settlement mean that none of the works or legal costs can be passed on to any future leaseholders or residents. Christian Hansen, of Bindmans, who acted for the claimants on a no-win no-fee basis, said: 'What we've seen is that a lot of constructors are basically dragging their feet, they're not keen to do as many works as they should and they're fighting these cases. I can only hope that settlements like this will be a bit of a wake-up call to them that actually they should be settling these things sooner than they are.' An NHG spokesperson said: 'We are pleased to have reached a resolution on this case, having overseen the required building safety work at the Exchange. 'Our duty is to ensure the safety of our buildings and residents and this is always our top priority. Our publicly stated policy is that we do not recharge leaseholders for the costs of remediation work to external walls or balconies where they have been deemed to pose a risk of spreading fire.' United Living was also approached for comment.

The closing of a local hair salon tells you why Britain is going bust

On Wednesday, Rachel Reeves will stand up in the House and announce her latest plans for saving the country from bankruptcy. Somehow, she will have to produce plausible remedies for a crisis that seems insoluble: how to deal with catastrophic levels of government debt when there are endless demands for more public spending including a brand new commitment to provide more funding for defence. Having ruled out tax rises that clearly impinge directly on what they call 'working people' – income tax, VAT and employee National Insurance contributions – Labour has made this situation more complicated. But, perversely, they have chosen to make it even worse by pushing many of the most productive contributors to the economy out of business. The Labour Government, by putting supposed ideological solidarity over economic reality, has created the perfect formula for the failure of precisely the business sector which contributes most to national vitality and growth. Let me offer an illustration in the hope that it might prove instructive to the present and any future Chancellor. A hairdressing salon that I know in a prosperous North London neighbourhood closed for good several weeks ago. It had been at its current location for over thirty years and was so popular that it often took days to get an appointment. After lockdown it recovered well with its loyal customers delighted to return. The emergence of the four day working week meant that Fridays became as busy as Saturdays and the salon was humming. So what went wrong? The owner was hit simultaneously by the increases in the minimum wage and employer NICS. Added to ever-increasing energy costs (exacerbated by green levies), this burden finally broke them. Even though they were a well-run thriving business, they could not survive. Sadly all of the junior staff and trainees were laid off. Given the economic climate now, they will struggle to find similar jobs anywhere else so they will not be paying any tax for the indefinite future and will almost certainly have to claim unemployment benefit: a double loss for the Treasury. The salon as a company has gone so it will no longer be paying corporation tax. The senior stylists who have carried on working privately are now self-employed which means they can, perfectly legitimately, claim all their work expenses against tax – so they will pay less income tax than they did under PAYE when they were employees. You get the picture. The net effect of the Government's measures has been to reduce the tax take for their own coffers and increase unemployment among people starting out in their working lives whose chances are further damaged by the ridiculous stipulation that they must have full rights to secure employment from the day they are hired. What happened to one hair salon might not seem all that significant to the nation's future. But this pattern is being repeated in small businesses – particularly the ones that provide employment to young people starting out in working life – in countless numbers. Retail shops, building services and hospitality outlets are cutting staff and failing to hire new recruits because the cost of employing them is back breaking. As a result, they are not expanding and developing their businesses as they might have – and so not contributing to the growth of the economy in the significant way that small businesses, with their inherent dynamism and industriousness, once did. Labour, in its supposed determination to support 'working people' has created a doom loop in which fewer people will be joining the workforce and the consequent reduction in tax revenue will make the government even less able to meet the limitless demands of the welfare system as well as pay off its debts. Needless to say, there have been some obvious winners in the Labour dynamic: public sector employees have had their mouths stuffed with gold not only because Labour is historically inclined to favour the unions which represent them but because they can threaten disruption on a scale that reduces any complaining chorus from the small business sector to an inconsequential squeak. But there is more to it than that, in ideological terms: business generally, and small business in particular, are seen as inherently self-interested enterprises. Because they have been created, developed and run by private individuals in the hope of making a profit, they must be morally suspect and less worthy of support than the services that the state funds and operates for the general good of society. Carry this to its logical conclusion and it becomes admirable to penalise people who want to profit from other people's need for their services in order to pay for the provision of services dispensed 'fairly' (and without profit) by the government. You know where this ends, don't you? The most innovative, resourceful, determined individuals who might have developed new ways of creating real wealth and employing more people in experimental ways have impossible demands put on them which threaten their survival or, at the very least, make their continued existence as difficult as possible. They are encumbered with inflexible employment conditions which might possibly be appropriate for huge public sector organisations but are death to experimental emerging enterprises. Their tax arrangements are made so horrendously complicated and difficult to master that expensive accountancy advice becomes essential. I know self-employed sole traders in the creative industries who would like to enlarge their practice but are terrified of crossing the income threshold that would require VAT registration which now involves coping with Making Tax Digital – a peculiarly sadistic form of monitoring which, as HMRC has just discovered in its attempt to introduce it in self-employed income tax, can be susceptible to cyber hacking. Yes indeed, create a business on your own and try to make it a success – just try. The Government, and its agents in HMRC who can't even be bothered to answer the phone, will make your life as difficult as possible. And the more obstacles they put in the way to prevent you from flourishing and expanding, the more virtuous they will feel even though you and the real wealth that you create are the only things that might have saved them.
