Value of club culture not recognised in UK, says committee chairwoman

Independent14-05-2025

Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee chairwoman Dame Caroline Dinenage has said the UK does not 'understand' the economic and cultural value of electronic music and club culture in the country.
Speaking at an event in London on Wednesday, hosted by the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA), to bring music industry leaders together to meet the culture committee and express their concerns, Dame Caroline told the PA news agency music is 'our global superpower as a nation'.
She told PA: 'I think it is under-recognised in the UK. I don't think we understand the economic value of it, I don't think we understand the cultural value of it, and what it means to so many people across the UK.
'Whether it's dance music or clubs, it's all been such a part of our youth, and continues today to be something that is very, sort of formative in people's lives and then stays with them throughout their lives.
'So it drives the economy, it drives tourism, and has a remarkable ability to sort of regenerate communities as well, buildings like this (the Drumsheds venue where the event was hosted), which is a huge empty former shop, it's now an absolutely thriving venue.
'What else could you use a huge site like this for? And it creates an enormous amount of joy and entertainment.'
At the event, Dame Caroline called for venues to be recognised as 'the real cultural institutions that they are' in a similar way to museums and theatres, namechecking Manchester's former Hacienda club for its 'pivotal role in Britain's modern heritage'.
Prior to hosting the event, the NTIA said it wanted to see 'proportionate taxation' for grassroots spaces and a reform of licensing and planning laws from the government.
Speaking about the recommendations her committee would be making to the Government, Dame Caroline told PA: 'I think we need to have a really close look at this. We did a report last year on grassroots music venues, and we made a few recommendations to the Government.
' One of them, which I think is really important, is that we advocated for a fan-led review of live music, in the same way that the previous government did a fan-led review of football.
'We think that there should be one done of music so that the Government can really get a grip, can really understand, up and down the country, what the local economic value is to our towns, our cities, to the people that live there, to the careers that they want to start, what it means to them in their communities.
'There's a number of recommendations we've made for things like that, obviously we're making financial recommendations as well, like a cut to VAT on ticket prices, which we think is really important in the current economic climate.
'They've faced a whole range of challenges with the increase in things like business rates, so we want to see them financially supported. But actually, we want the Government to really get inside this and understand what's going on right at the very core of it.'
NTIA research has found that on average three nightclubs closed each week in the UK, with 34% of clubs lost since November 2019.
The group also claims new post-April tax rises from the Chancellor's autumn budget will 'threaten many more'.
It said its polls had shown that 92% of nightlife businesses had cut staff, operating hours, or essential investments, and that 40% of businesses said they would have to close in the next six months without support.
The NTIA also claimed another 40% of venues are looking to make job cuts.

Victoria Beckham steps out as it's announced her husband David is set to receive a knighthood

Victoria Beckham stepped out in West London on Thursday as it was announced her husband David is set to receive a knighthood. The former Spice Girl, 50, looked effortlessly chic in black workout gear and a pair of stylish shades as she emerged from her £100K Porsche. The news of David's knighthood in the King's Birthday Honour's List comes after years of being snubbed for the honour. Now footage from the couple's 2003 ITV documentary The Real Beckhams has resurfaced, revealing Victoria had her sights on a title of her own long before the honours list caught up with her husband. Filmed on the morning of David's OBE investiture at Buckingham Palace, the scene shows the couple in a London hotel room preparing for the big day. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'David's nan and grandad are very excited. It's going to be a really nice day, and we're going to have lunch afterwards,' Victoria explains, before turning to the football legend and adding: 'I can't believe you're going to be David Beckham OBE.' David replied, 'I'm going to make you call me it,' to which Victoria responds with a grin, 'When you become a Sir and I'm a Lady, I'll make everyone call me it. Everyone! Even you.' Laughing awkwardly, David said: 'We'll see.' It was, at the time, a light-hearted exchange, but with David finally due to be knighted more than two decades later, her playful banter now feels incredibly prescient. The former Manchester United and England star, 50, is to be awarded a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours List. He will be confirmed as a 'Sir' when the list is released next week, according to The Sun, meaning Victoria will officially be known as Lady Beckham. In the resurfaced footage of their preparation for his OBE investiture, their sons - and only children at the time - Romeo, then 14 months, and Brooklyn, then four, also appear. A lively Brooklyn flits through the scene, hugging his dad as he returns from the ceremony. The tender father-son moment that day feels especially poignant now, given the rift between Brooklyn and the family. The news of David's knighthood in the King's Birthday Honour's List comes after years of being snubbed for the honour - the doc was filmed on the morning of David's OBE investiture at Buckingham Palace, the scene shows the couple in a London hotel room preparing for the big day Brooklyn and his wife Nicola Peltz Beckham remain estranged from the wider family, meaning it's unlikely they will be joining them in celebrating David's knighthood next week. Victoria and David also share son Cruz, 20, and daughter Harper, 13. At another point in the video, Victoria jokes to David about his OBE, which was awarded by the late Queen for his services to football: 'Damn, I can't believe you beat me to it.' The pop star turned fashion designer is yet to receive a royal honour and following the investiture, she also admits to having a new-found appreciation for the royals. 'I like the fact that we have a Royal Family - it's lovely - but I was looking at the Queen today and I'm thinking, she's standing there for an hour and a half, giving out these awards... she probably does this every day. She travels around, she does a job at the end of the day, and she's still really polite. She made every single person there today feel special.' She adds: 'She spoke to everybody! Some guy got a medal for services to the Inland Revenue. I mean, who the hell would want to talk to him? But she did! That was so nice. 'We had a little bit of a nosy round [the Palace]. It wasn't quite as stylish as Beckingham Palace, not quite as modern.' Beckingham Palace was the nickname given to their lavish £2.5million home in Hertfordshire, which David and Victoria purchased shortly after their 1999 wedding. David, an avid royalist since he was a schoolboy in Chingford, has long craved for a knighthood and it appeared to be within his grasp having received an OBE from the late Queen in 2003 The Grade II-listed mansion, set in 24 acres and featuring a maze, recording studio and football pitch, became a symbol of their early-2000s celebrity status. They sold the property in 2014 to focus on homes abroad and a more private lifestyle. Later on in the fly-on-the-wall documentary, David reflects: 'I felt really proud today. Proud to be English,' adding that the Queen told him it was a great honour to be giving him the medal. 'She asked me if it's tiring travelling back and forward playing football. I said no.' Referring to his 2003 autobiography My Side, he continues: 'She didn't ask for an autograph... She'd read my book though.' The tattooed ex-England captain last month chatted with King Charles at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London, with their bond reportedly growing close in recent years through their shared love of gardening. David, an avid royalist since he was a schoolboy in Chingford, has long craved for a knighthood and it appeared to be within his grasp having received an OBE from the late Queen in 2003. While his appointment as an ambassador to HM's charity the King's Foundation was deemed an encouraging sign earlier last year, but his complicated tax affairs had once been viewed as a possible barrier. And in February 2017, there was a slew of leaked emails showing the former footballer had appeared to unleash a barrage of expletives criticising the honours committee that had once again left him off the list for a coveted gong. There was also an alleged 2013 leaked email, when, bitter not to be knighted, he complained about Katherine Jenkins, fuming 'Katherine Jenkins OBE for what? Singing at the rugby and going to see the troops. Plus taking coke. F****** joke.'

ZARA McDermott raked in over £4k a WEEK from her TV career as her massive salary is revealed. The small print also revealing loans from the business to Zara at £122,798 during the year, with £14,929 outstanding as at year end. Zara pocketing a £23,661 profit in her first year or trading, £43,796 in 2020, £61,891 in 2021, £13,378 in 2022 and £167,187 last year. Zara Nicole McDermott is one of two active businesses listed for her on Companies House – her other firm, Tiger Mac Properties, was set up last year. Its nature of business is listed as 'buying and selling of own real estate.' In February this year, it reported borrowings from Nottingham Building Society. Secured against a property in South London, suggesting it owns a £500,000 flat in a 1990s block in Wandsworth. Zara has fronted documentaries for the BBC including Revenge Porn, Uncovering Rape Culture, Love in the Flesh and Disordered Eating. Zara recently returned from a getaway to Costa Rica with One Direction singer Louis. The Perfect hitmaker and reality beauty couldn't keep their hands off each other on a sun-soaked day out. They were spotted hiring a quad bike, with Louis taking the lead as they cruised through town. The History singer wore an orange T-shirt and white shorts, which he teamed with black sunglasses and a baseball cap. Zara stunned in loose white trousers and a crop top layered over her green bikini. At one point Louis puffed on a cigarette while they waited for their ride, with a smitten Zara wrapping her arms around him. Louis returned the affection by gently squeezing her bum and planting a kiss. They were later seen grinning at each other before hopping on the quad bike and driving away. Louis flew the Strictly star out in first class to a secluded villa last week. He's currently working on new music there and wanted to spend some quality time with Zara after going public with their romance. She was previously seen locking lips with her new pop star beau as they dined at a restaurant. A source said: 'Louis and Zara are going from strength to strength. 'He got his team to organise her first-class travel from London to Costa Rica. 'It meant Zara was unable to attend the TV Baftas but she is keen to spend as much time with Louis as possible." Louis will be back in the UK for Soccer Aid next week and is set to play on the England side with Zara's ex Sam Thompson. Zara split from former Made In Chelsea star Sam in January, moving out of Sam's West London home, and leaving behind the two cats they shared. She has decided to skip Soccer Aid to avoid an awkward run-in with her ex. Zara and Louis confirmed their romance on holiday in Los Angeles over a month ago. The pair were snapped holding hands in a sweet PDA during their trip to the US. The Sun revealed they were an item after they were spotted enjoying an overnight stay at The Suffolk in Aldeburgh in exclusive photos. It came amid reports that Zara had formed close bonds with Louis' sisters Phoebe and Daisy. They recently teased a new reality show, with sources claiming Zara has been helping them behind the scenes thanks to her experience as a TV presenter and documentary maker. 5 5

Huge EastEnders star slams time on soap and claims bosses ‘made promises they never kept'

A FORMER EastEnders star has slammed his time on the show and claimed bosses 'made promises they didn't keep'. Jamie Foreman starred as Derek Branning in EastEnders from November 2011 until December 2012. 3 3 3 Despite being part of one of Walford's most iconic families, Jamie, 67, has confessed his time as Derek is not 'a career highlight'. Speaking on the Lewis Nicholls Show, he said: 'I'm going to be a little bit controversial here. 'I don't see EastEnders as anywhere near the highlight of my career. 'It was a lovely job and I respect it. But for me… they'd asked me so many times before.' Recalling the offer from EastEnders, Jamie continued: 'They said, 'it's with the best family, it's full on, you can do as long as you want'. I said, 'I only want to do it for a year'. 'I went and met with them and they made me all manner of promises that they never kept, like 'you'll never work a Saturday'. I did every Saturday. I was the first in, last out every day.' Jamie's character Derek was killed off during the Christmas Day 2012 episode when he suffered a heart attack. In his short time as a resident of Albert Square Derek cemented himself as one of the soap's most notorious bad boys. He had an affair with Alfie Moon's wife Kat Slater, tormented Pat Butcher on her death bed and told Sharon Watts' son Denny the truth about his dad Dennis Rickman. It's not the first time Jamie has spoken negatively about his time on the show. Penny Branning calls her dad 'big man Jack' in EastEnders In 2013 he appeared on Daybreak and said: 'I hated the scenes in the Queen Vic, I'm terribly sorry to everybody! 'I'm sure a lot of the cast will say the same thing - they're so long and laborious. 'You've got to stand there and wait for somebody over there to stop talking, so you're listening to that conversation, then it cuts to somebody else. You never shoot a scene quickly in there.'
